Title: 2016 SBU Women's Lacrosse

8. Kylie Ohlmiller, Stony Brook, So., A

After Stony Brook coach Joe Spallina had a phenomenal year on all fronts, most recently winning the MLL championship with the New York Lizards, his focus has shifted entirely to the Seawolves, hoping to improve the program by leaps and bounds from what they accomplished in 2015 – a program-best 18 wins and the No. 6 seed in the NCAA tournament. A lot of the team's success had to do with freshman Kylie Ohlmiller's performance as she finished with a team-high 86 points. She is a well-rounded attacker who might just be the dark horse for this highest honor.

Stony Brook coach Joe Spallina on Ohlmiller: "Kylie is a world-class talent with unparalleled stick skills that stormed onto the national front last year. A great quality she has is that the bigger the game, the bigger her performance!"

Think about this for a brief moment: It is well within reason to argue that Stony Brook's program-record 18-win season was reflective of the lowest-performing team Joe Spallina coached in 2015.

Certainly, the Seawolves put together a monster year. They won 18 games and captured the America East title for a third straight season, earning a seed and home game in the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. But they suffered a home loss to Princeton in that second-round contest — only the second time a team had bested them last spring — but a season-ending loss nontheless.

Stony Brook isn't going to sneak up on anyone this year, but they won't really have to. The cupboard is very, very well stocked as the team works through the fall. Of seven players to earn All-America East honors last spring, six are back, including all five first-team selections.

When lifts became a regular routine for Michelle Rubino as a freshman at Stony Brook, she immediately fell in love with them and started planning for a bodybuilding career. By the fall season of junior year, she was doing extra weightlifting outside of team lifts, and by senior year, coach Joe Spallina joked that her arms were officially bigger than his.

Stony Brook's a team that reloads just like the Marylands and Carolinas of the world. They're on a mission to go further in the NCAA tournament after a disappointing – and somewhat unexpected – loss to Princeton in the second round after securing a bye as the No. 6 seed.

"We want to win a national championship. We want to get to the final four," Spallina said. "We just have to keep our nose to the stone and continue to improve like we have in the past four seasons."

It's rare for underclassmen – let alone a freshman – to be named a Tewaaraton nominee, but with a team-high 86 points for the unexpected "underdog" Stony Brook – that broke the top five of Lacrosse Magazine's rankings for the first time in program history – Ohlmiller was hard not to notice. And she still has three seasons to go. As people like to say regarding young stars in the game, that's scary. She's the dark horse for the Tewaaraton again in 2016.

Joe Spallina’s team ran through the competition in 2015 with monumental wins over Florida (12-11), Northwestern (11-9) and Notre Dame (9-5). The Seawolves return five preseason All-Americans this spring, headlined by sophomore Kylie Ohlmiller (42G, 44A), as they’ll look to make another run through the America East en route to the NCAA Tournament in 2016.

I’d like to give women’s lacrosse fans a spoiler Final Four team or two. I’m not complaining – because the competition is always fun to watch – but the same teams have peppered the championship weekend program for far too long. We have heavy-hitting Maryland and Northwestern, and more recently North Carolina and Syracuse have made themselves at home come Memorial Day Weekend. I’ll throw Duke and Virginia into that grouping, too, I suppose. I think it’s time for some dark horses to flip the switch, and my money (albeit, early on) is on Notre Dame, Penn State and Stony Brook to be legitimate Final Four contenders come 2016.

In order to crack the top 4, they will have to improve their overall team speed. Hopefully, the speed will improve with each incoming freshman class.  Can't wait for Yale (my niece is the captain for the Bulldogs) to play at Stony Brook on March 8th.

For the third straight year, Stony Brook has had the best defense in Division I. At this rate, it’s the defense that has lifted the program to new heights. “Defensively, we’re not going to change a thing,” Spallina said. “It’s still going to be a lockdown defensive unit.” The Seawolves’ defense made up for their weaknesses — draws and saves were ranked 94th and 103rd, respectively. “Whether we scored or let up a goal, we were giving the other team the ball to start,” Spallina said. “We were making stops and getting the ball back to execute offensively. That even speaks larger volumes of our defense with the job they did last year.”

• Don't overlook Stony Brook, either. The Seawolves, 18-2 a year ago, have led the NCAA in defense for the last three years behind senior defender Maegan Meritz, a preseason All-American. Offensively, the Seawolves are no slouches behind the tandem of Kylie Ohlmiller (42 goals, 44 assists last year as a freshman) and Courtney Murphy (71 goals). Stony Brook does not open its season until Feb. 28.

“I remember coming in high school to the national championship when it was hosted here,” Ohlmiller, the team’s leader in points last season, said. “I was thinking then, ‘how sick would it be to play as the home team in the national championship?’ and now it’s possible. That’s definitely something that we’re going to be reaching for.”

5. We are Long Island’s team.
Of the 32 players on the Seawolves, 30 hail from Long Island. Coach Spallina’s recruiting of student-athletes from Long Island has paid dividends on the field, as some of the best players from the island have stayed home and been a part of building a national power in a location that is passionate about the game of lacrosse.

“We have had great success recruiting Long Island,” said Spallina. “There are many intangibles that go into recruiting beyond ability - mentality, desire, work ethic and passion for the sport - and I feel that Long Island is a breeding ground for excellence in those areas. We love kids that come with more questions than answers because those kids turn into beasts here!”

What’s next?

Halley Quillinan (@hrquillinan): Stony Brook vs. Florida

In a rematch of last year’s 12-11 Stony Brook victory in Gainesville, the Gators are set to fly north on Saturday to take on the No. 8 Seawolves who recently opened their season with an 18-4 win over Bryant. Last spring, this was – in my opinion – the game that put the rest of the nation on watch as it pertains to Stony Brook. The win came a week after they upended Notre Dame, 9-5, at home, and a month after they opened their season with a 7-4 win over USC. Freshman Kylie Ohlmiller tallied six points on a game-high five goals and an assist, while Shannon Gilroy poured in two goals and dished out four assists.

Fast-forward a year, and Florida’s already proven they’re a national contender with wins over UNC and Syracuse; but where’s Stony Brook fit into all of this? The game against Bryant was their first of the season, so this is their first big test of the year. While the Seawolves return the bulk of their starting lineup and the majority of their offensive firepower (read: Ohlmiller, Murphy, Yevoli & Van Dyke) from 2015, the Gators rebuilt in the offseason – but into a much stronger team, in my opinion. Their speed, ability to execute and athleticism set them apart against the Orange. Can it do the same against Stony Brook?

The Stony Brook defense forced Towson to turn the ball over as the possession clock expired, which ultimately led to the Seawolves' game-winning goal with four seconds remaining on the game clock.

Quote
But for the first time in recent years, in which rules changes like self-starts and three seconds as a major foul have benefitted offenses, Duke coach Kerstin Kimel and Stony Brook coach Joe Spallina say the defense finally has an advantage.

Coaches downplayed the clock's effect during fall ball. Yet both Duke and Stony Brook opened the season with wins featuring game-changing plays resulting directly from it.

Stony Brook won their first game against Towson, 10-9, on Kylie Ohlmiller’s game-winning goal with four seconds left. Preceding that, with 1:53 remaining, the Tigers won the draw, but failed to get a shot off before the possession clock expired. The Seawolves were awarded possession with 17 seconds left, then earned a free position after a successful clear – the attack had a head start on Drexel downfield – and saw the game-winner seal the deal
