18. Stony Brook

Stony Brook was a game away from making the playoffs in 2014, but unfortunately for the Seawolves, that game came against Albany. The biggest loss for Stony Brook is Mike Rooney graduating, but the good news for the Seawolves is that Brody Eastwood returns this season, having placed 3rd in the nation in goals last season.

With Albany a question mark in the post-Thompson era, maybe Stony Brook can wrestle control away and take the America East crown this season. The offense is there for Stony Brook, but can the defense handle playing Albany twice a year? We’ll see.

Player to watch: Brody Eastwood, Attack

Brody Eastwood, Stony Brook

Stony Brook had a great season, and a fantastic scoring offense last year. The only problem was that they share a conference with Albany, who had an even better season and a flashier scoring offense. Returning for the Seawolves for his senior year is Brody Eastwood, who posted 61 goals last year.

Eastwood has posted 40+ goals in all three of his seasons at Stony Brook, and it’s hard to imagine that he doesn’t keep that streak going in his senior season. The question for Eastwood is whether or not he can become the leader of this offense. Mike Rooney posted 112 points for the Seawolves last season, and 62 of those points were assists. Eastwood only had six assists last season. For Eastwood to take a step up from scorer to star, he’ll need to prove he can feed the rock as well as he can rip it.

Zach Oliveri

Old School: UMass
New School: Stony Brook

Skinny: The former U.S. U19 goalie had a year of eligibility left and decided to use it closer to home at Stony Brook. With a career .532 save percentage, Oliveri will be an upgrade over incumbent starter Hayden Johnstone (.455).

People are forgetting (or didn't know) that Johnstone had surgery mid-season and came back about 2 weeks earlier than he should have.

I think Zach and Hayden will complement each other well, and push each other.  Would actually be a great 'tandem' goalie scenario - they both bring different things to the position, for sure.

Overall, this is 'the year' for this team.....can't wait!!!
Any fall ball?

30 in 30: Who's Due for a Breakthrough in 2016?

Stony Brook

The America East has been Albany's playground in recent seasons, but it's easy to forget that Stony Brook was right with the Great Danes last year, playing a barn-burner of a regular-season game (Albany won 17-15) and then making it to the league's championship game before Albany ended its season with a 22-9 rout. With Lyle Thompson gone, it's hard not to envision Scott Marr's team coming back to the pack in the AE. Will the Seawolves, led by honorable mention All-American Challen Rodgers (30G, 23A), take over?

recruits that aren't on the roster-

bobby amato
danny hughes (we heard he was headed for Bryant football)
james kickel
dylan crossan

other departures:
pat harrington (we knew about this earlier)
anthony ross (we knew about this earlier)
brad garcia

also, I see in two years we are set to get greg roros, and this year we have nick roros listed as a freshman.  perhaps this is a mistake, or did we get both!?!  https://www.google.com/#q=nick+roros+stony+brook

also, fraietta is still on the roster.

anyway, 14 freshmen, and a big senior class of 10 (that's rarer and rarer these days) and a good sign.  were pretty short on attackmen, but then again, that's usually a matter of how you are listed on the roster.

we might be starting 7-8 seniors this year.  with ALL of our juniors either starting or getting significant time.

Early 2016 Major League Lacrosse Mock Draft

17. Rochester Rattlers – Brody Eastwood, A, Stony Brook

Eastwood's case is an easy one to make after he scored an NCAA-best and program record 62 goals as a junior. He also dished out a personal-best six assists. He is a top indoor prospect as well. Rochester can afford to take on Eastwood after losing both Mark Matthews and Randy Staats in the expansion draft.

America East Preview: Thompson is Gone, Albany is Not
http://laxmagazine.com/college_men/DI/2015-16/news/120415_america_east_conference_preview_thompson_is_gone_albany_is_not

Quote
One thing’s for sure: The Great Danes are unlikely to back away from their up-tempo style. Maybe they won’t have the college game’s most creative player on the field. But Fields and Justin Reh make for an interesting foundation on attack, and assuming Seth Oakes is back (he wasn’t with the team in the fall), Albany will be built to score again.

But so is Stony Brook, which averaged 13.89 goals per game and brings back 11 of its top 12 scorers. It also shot at a blistering 40.2 percent --- yup, Albany didn’t even lead the league in shooting efficiency.

If the Seawolves’ defense improves, they have a chance to narrow the gap considerably in a conference owned by one program for the last three years. Their offense by itself will be enough to keep it competitive in most games. Like Albany, Stony Brook will be an entertaining team to watch this spring.

Any discussion of the finest finishers in the country must include Eastwood, the British Columbia native who scored a school-record 62 goals. Lethal on extra-man? Sure, to the tune of 10 goals, which ranked sixth nationally. A man who made the most of his opportunities? It’s hard to argue that considering his .639 shooting percentage led the country. The question here is how much will the departure of feeder Mike Rooney, who graduated as Stony Brook’s all-time leader in assists (121) and points (253), impact Eastwood’s effectiveness. Should the Seawolves have a suitable replacement to plug in, Eastwood figures to pile up some more gaudy numbers while pacing a potent attack.

Rogers, Reh, Eastwood named preseason All-American
Face-Off Yearbook announces preseason All-Americans
Dec. 8, 2015

Baltimore, Md. - Seniors Challen Rogers (Coquitlam, British Columbia) and Brody Eastwood (Victoria, British Columbia) and junior Jeff Reh (Sound Beach, N.Y.) were named preseason All-Americans in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook issue.

Rogers and Reh were named to the third team, while Eastwood garnered honorable mention.

Rogers produced a second straight 50-point season, tallying a career-best 30 goals and 23 assists. He had four hat tricks and at least three points in 12 of 18 games. In conference games, Rogers averaged more than three points per game and scored a career-high five goals at Vermont.

Rogers is 51 points away from becoming the fifth player in school history to reach 200 career points.

After making the move to the defensive midfield, Reh earned first team All-America East honors as a sophomore, totaling 51 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers to go along with four goals and four assists.

He had at least four ground balls in a game eight times and posted a career-high four caused turnovers vs. Lehigh.

Eastwood recorded a single-season school record 62 goals, including 10 against UMass Lowell. He joined Jordan McBride '11 as the only players in school history with three straight 40-goal seasons to start their careers.

Eastwood is 30 goals away from breaking McBride's school record of 175 career goals and 46 points away from 200.

Stony Brook opens 2016 at home vs. Sacred Heart on February 16.

anyone hear anything now that the fall is nearly over?

here's what I was able to cull just from the web-

Cole Anderson is listed as LSM
Chris Pedone is listed at mid
Sean Seaberg is listed as LSM
Justin Pugal is listed at defense, yet had 34 goals last year (?)
Sichenzia is listed at mid
we have five goalies: a freshman, soph, junior, senior, and grad

this freshman class is big- a lot of guys over 6 feet (sometimes these #s are inflated).  another fact ive noticed over the years is how many guys have a dad who played lacrosse in college.

42 total on the roster (coach Mauro not on there yet)
14 fr, 11 so, 7 jr, 9 sr, 1 gs (17 upperclassmen)
about half the team is over 6'2'' (again, might be generous)
we might not even need to play freshmen this year

big question of course is who is going to replace rooney.  judging by last year, it seems like it could be sheets.  then again, I wouldn't be surprised if ozsvath or howell get into the mix.  some of our mids play attack too.

offense should be fairly settled with rogers, hughes, bitzer, corpo, and perhaps Lloyd, chicquen, or freshmen.   And then easty/Schultz on attack.  we are deep everywhere (literally) except attack.

we are deep at midfield.  Lindsay is likely our primary faceoff mid but now we also have owen daly and james gerstner.  our faceoff unit / defensive midfield should be one of our strengths, with curry, Lindsay, and reh.  Robison and ellis should be there too.

LSM is deep too, as curry has that locked down, likely abdellatif behind him.

goalie might be interesting with five able players.  rock down low with randall, and the last spot could go to anyone.  we have five new freshman poles, though it seems most are LSMs (or at least they are listed that way, and that doesn't mean much).

these are all guesses of course.

I question an article that states bitzer is an attackman (listed at mid, played two years as mid) and also writes "bitzer will become a regular starter".

and that jim nagle coached at Harvard.

but anyway.  looks like the moves are: bitzer to attack, curry to close, and tyler Anderson getting the nod at LSM.  possibly sichenzia back to attack.

it's starting to sound like easty on attack with possibly bitzer at x, maybe sichenzia, and then sheets/Schultz on the wing.  roughly speaking.

Brody Eastwood, Sr., A and Challen Rogers, Sr., M

Brody Eastwood (Victoria, B.C.) does essentially one thing on the lacrosse field: he gets open, catches and finishes with his left hand. During the 2015 season, he only scored three unassisted goals, tallied just six assists and recorded only 11 turnovers, but still managed do more than his part to fill up the stat sheet by scoring 59 assisted goals — nine more than any other player.
Though the variety of Eastwood’s game might be limited, it is difficult to understate the prolific rate and astounding efficiency at which he manages to do what he does best. On his way to a 62-goal season in 2015, opposing goalies only saved 14 of his shots and only 21 of them were off target (and three of those hit the post). The combination of putting more than 78% of his shots on goal and having goalies save less than 19% of them means that Eastwood was the most efficient shooter in all of DI lacrosse. His career total of 146 goals in just 50 games puts Zach Greer’s DI career mark of 206 within reach, and the rate of 2.92 goals per game would have him in a tie for the 21st best career average of all time.

The primary beneficiary of Eastwood’s finishing ability in 2015 was Mike Rooney, who accumulated 30 assists feeding the ball to Eastwood. One of the players tied for second on the team with eight assists to Eastwood is another Canadian: midfielder Challen Rogers (Coquitlam, B.C.).

Those that don’t pay attention to the box game might to surprised to learn that Rogers is actually one of indoor’s top defenders. Big, fast and athletic at 6-4, 220 lbs., he makes such an impact on the defensive end that he was not only named the top defender in the British Columbia Junior A Lacrosse League, but also was named the league's MVP. He has the talent to merit consideration as a first-round pick in the 2016 NLL draft.

Given his size and position, the natural comparisons are to either Myles Jones or Sergio Perkovic. Rogers is less of a ball-dominant creator than Jones, and while he is a good step-down shooter, he lacks Perkovic’s overpowering cannon. In short, Rogers is probably best described as a more, well, Canadian version. While he can certainly use his physical abilities as a dodger, he also excels as a cutter off-ball with the stick skills to finish inside.

I believe they they interviewed Nagle so the Bitzer move might be true.  Nagle does love him.  Also, the Harvard thing was a copy and paste job that should have been changed to "Record at Stony Brook"

Surprised Curry is playing down low

Inside Lacrosse had Stony Brooks defense ranked 10 overall in D1.   They mention Reh is one of the best shorties in the nation, Curry as a top LSM, even thought he might play down low and Randell is a shut down defender.   Gotta think having Oliveri in the cage help the rankings.

ahh I see.

I somehow doubt our D (though likely to improve this year!) is ranked 10.  with that said, I also agree that 23 is too low overall.  we have some early tough tests that should all be close games.  SJU, brown, Fairfield, Hof, UA.

RuTgers might be a different look without Nardella and Alleyne, but then again, we always have a close one with the knights.

out of those 6, if we can win 3-4, we make an argument for top 20.  losing to SHU or BC will sink us.

I really have a feeling that the writers/rankers don't really see the teams play, they just look at the rosters and the preseason honors and go off that.  they see what makes a splash.  like a transfer goalie who made waves in HS.  or a successful HS coach joining as a volunteer defensive asst.

I say this because I don't believe our defense- which is returning everyone- is really top ten considering it was ranked 48th in GPG (nearly 11) against a weaker schedule.  hope im wrong.  but we gave up 13 to Binghamton and needed OT to beat them- at home no less- to sneak into the AE tournament.

Challen Rogers, M, Stony Brook
Why do you have to be from Western Canada, Challen Rogers? Why? Why are you the Jesse King of this draft? It’s so upsetting to know that only one team is going to take you and they already have a ton of Canadians! You can play D! You can create your shot! You’re tough and get under your opponents skin! Why can’t I watch you play in MLL every game this season? Every team could use you! It’s so frustrating. Can the league get an airline sponsorship and get some of these Western Canucks on rosters? Anyone have a rich uncle? It’s driving me mad! Can we talk about someone else please? Fare thee well, sweet, angry and promising Canadian Prince. -KD

Brody Eastwood, A, Stony Brook
The first thing you need to know about Brody Eastwood is that he scored 62 goals on 97 shots last season. Those numbers are already borderline nonsensical on their own, but how about some perspective to go with them? Eastwood’s 64% shooting (his average over three seasons is 61%) was the best in the nation; the second place guy, Army’s Connor Cook, shot 49%. Not impressive enough? How about this: Eastwood’s 62 goals were second most in the nation. The leading goal-scorer, Albany’s Connor fields, scored four more goals by taking 65 more shots. The man makes Hawkeye look like Hans Moleman, but based on discussions with MLL coaches, it may not be enough for non-Outlaws to pull the trigger. Why? You guessed it; he’s a box star from Victoria, B.C. Assuming he heads home after graduation, arranging that travel on a regular basis is an awful lot to ask of an East Coast franchise (not to mention the NLL conflict potentially looming in his future). Granted it varies day to day, but last I made it up, the conversion rate is something like one goal American equals about 2.3 goals Western Canadian; it’s not fair to poor Brody, but to a GM with severely limited resources, the 25-goal guy from the next town over sounds like the much better play. -CR

Returning Leaders

Brody Eastwood (62, 6)
Challen Rogers (30, 23)
Alex Corpolongo (23, 6)
Face-Offs

Jay Lindsay (143-of-257, .556)
Goalie

Hayden Johnstone (12.28, .416)
Zach Oliveri (UMass transfer, 9.49, .532)
Best Case: Taking Over the America East

Stony Brook has just been a step behind the Great Danes the past few seasons in terms of America East supremacy. This season, ranked No. 23, returning eight starters and with lots of positive momentum, is as good as any to knock off the top dogs. If Eastwood and senior Matt Schultz (16, 18) stay healthy and the speed of junior Ryan Bitzer (13, 8 ) frees them up, it's a formidable attack unit. Add in spectacular midfielder Challen Rogers (30, 23), and they will outscore many teams. Defensively, the goal is for Zach Oliveri to backstop an improved unit, along with sophomore Ben Randall continuing his progression and d-mid Jeff Reh keying transition.

Worst Case: More of the Same

The Seawolves will surely compete for the America East title, but can they get over that Albany hump? It'd hurt to fall just short yet again. Even if they have more or fewer key non-conference wins as last year, the only thing that matters is winning the America East title. The offense will be good enough, and on paper the defense is ready. If the D isn't better than 48th in the nation, though, that's a problem.

over at UA, faceoff mid connor Russell is rehabbing a knee and oakes is supposed to return (?).  those are two of the bigger names over there.  of course, there's fields and riorden.

Three Terps (Pat Young, Bryan Cole and Henry West) are surely at the top of head coach Brian Reese and president Dave Cottle's draft board. The most intriguing option, if he were to slip to the 11th overall pick, would be Challen Rogers (Stony Brook). The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Canadian buried 30 goals and dished out 23 assists while shooting 45.5% percent as a junior.

Quote
Boston Cannons – Challen Rogers, Midfield, Stony Brook – Stony Brook has been challenging Albany for the Amercia East crown for a few years now. Much of that is due to Rogers in the midfield.

New York Lizards – Brody Eastwood, Attack, Stony Brook – Coach Spallina had to be thrilled having a shot at Eastwood. He’s a fantastic player who Spallina has probably seen plenty of as the Stony Brook women’s coach. This is a near impossible attack unit to crack, but even if he is just a practice player, he will be a great asset.

Stony Brook — Coming off a 13-5 record in 2015 and returning eight starters, Stony Brook seems poised to have a big 2016. Seniors Brody Eastwood (62G, 6A) and Challen Rogers (30, 23) are as dangerous a duo as any in NCAA lacrosse, and a solid face-off man in Jay Lindsay (55.6%) will be feeding them possessions. They return their entire first midfield and have notable depth and athleticism at defensive midfield. Defensively, they return their top cover man in Ben Randall and UMass transfer Zach Oliveri (53.2%) gives them a solid option at goalie. With Albany losing much of their star power, the America East title could be theirs to take. However, a poor strength-of-schedule (ranked No. 49) raises questions around an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Boston, Mass. - The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team has been picked to finish second in the America East preseason poll, conference officials announced Thursday.

The Seawolves picked up two first-place votes and 32 points overall.

Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.

Albany received five first-place votes and 35 overall.  Vermont was picked third followed by Hartford, Binghamton, UMBC and UMass Lowell.

Fifth-year head coach Jim Nagle returns eight starters, including preseason All-Americans in seniors Challen Rogers (Coquitlam, British Columbia) and Brody Eastwood (Victoria, British Columbia) and junior Jeff Reh (Sound Beach, N.Y.).

Despite the graduation of Mike Rooney, Stony Brook returns eight of its nine top point getters from a year ago.  Eastwood finished in a tie for second nationally with 62 goals and ranked third with 3.44 goals per game.  Rogers finished with 30 goals and 23 assists, reaching 50 points for a second straight year.

Seniors Matt Schultz (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Chris Hughes (Oceanside, N.Y.) and juniors Alex Corpolongo (Purdys, N.Y.) and Ryan Bitzer (Riverhead, N.Y.) registered at least 20 points apiece last year.

After making the move to the defensive midfield, Reh starred as a short stick midfielder.  He recorded 51 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers and added four goals and four assists to earn first team all-conference honors.

Reh is joined on the defensive end by returning starters in seniors Lucas Rock (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Dylan Curry (East Meadow, N.Y.) and sophomore Ben Randall (Mason, Ohio).

Stony Brook's depth at goalie includes senior transfer Zach Oliveri (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), junior Hayden Johnstone (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Brandon Maciejewski (Penn Yan, N.Y.).

The 2016 schedule kicks off Tuesday, February 16 vs. Sacred Heart at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

Close Defense — The Seawolves have an uncommon luxury in that senior Lucas Rock garnered the majority of the attention and awards as the top defenseman, but sophomore Ben Randall was drawing the top assignment in most games last season.

Goal — Hayden Johnstone returns after starting last season and stopping 40%, but UMass transfer Zach Oliveri was a three-year starter and career 53% stopper in Amherst. That 13% uptick could account for the difference between Stony Brook being a bottom 30 defense

Sacred Heart vs SBU

oliveri gets the start in cage, no other surprises.

video link: http://www.americaeast.com/mediaPortal/player.dbml?catid=0&id=1624177&db_oem_id=14000

stats: http://www.stonybrookathletics.com/gametracker/launch/gt_mlacros.html?event=1466626&school=ston&sport=mlacros&camefrom=&startschool=&

last week SHU beat lafayette 12-8, the leopards were never really in the game.  they must take a lot of low % shots or they just shot poorly against lafayette.  they destroyed lafayette on GBs though, also riding, caused turnovers, all of which are expected for feb games and cold weather.  the only stat that the leopards controlled was faceoff draws, 15-9.

i dont know much about these guys but dodge and masi are good players on offense.  i think they have a lot of LI players including former SB recruit mike calvagna.

faceoff break from lindsay to bitzer, bounce shot.  1-0 SB

rogers inside look to easty, high corner.  2-0 SB

bitzer behind, feeds far pipe to cutting easty, inside shot.  3-0 SB

SHU timeout. 1221 Q1

rees and anderson on pole.  i think abdellatif too. and i see chicquen, lloyd, daly.  pugal too.

SB flag (curry slash), shot hit pipe.  SHU EMO, SB kills flag and clears.

SHU ball at x, feeds cutter near pipe, posch shoots inside.  3-1 SB.

SHU flag, slash.  SB EMO, rogers up top, easty curls on top of crease, feeds, turns, shoots low to low. 4-1 SB.

randall takeaway, GB, switches hands, pass upfield to reh, fast break, GB, easty picks up and behind the back bouncer.  5-1 SB.

game got a bit sloppy on both sides (wet conditions).  SB's slide/recover looks in mid-season form.  forced long possessions with solid defense, even getting a shot clock violation.  end of Q1.

SB had 5 goals on 10 shots in the first stanza.  one was a pipe.

right off the face, anderson GB, wheels it upfield to bitzer, crossfield to open easty for an easy goal.  sichenzia on the field. 6-1 SB

corpo flagged for pushing.  SHU EMO.  two big saves from olivieri.  SB kills flag.  clear to ellis, SHU flag for offsides.  and another for pushing.  SB EMO, but scores right after expiry.  high to high outside shot hughes, from easty.  7-1 SB.  roros is out there.

SHU flag on next faceoff, delay.  SB EMO, easty on GLE feeds cross cage to shultz, pops in a 3 yard bouncer.  SHU slide just a second late.  8-1 SB

SHU timeout. 846 Q2
SB timeout 813 Q2

sheets is out there at x.  slow break, shultz from wing, feeds reh cutting up top, long 12 yard bouncer, really stepped into it.  9-1 SB

i think pugal now has a short stick, bailey too?  outside shot from the perimeter hits olivieri, trickles in.  kramer to garritano.  9-2 SB

SB timeout 313 Q2

randall has at least 4 takeaways in the first half.  broken play, sichenzia gets the GB, curls around X, feeds ellis open on the far pipe in a 2 man game.  10-2 SB

halftime.

beginning of 3Q.

corpo goes left, then spins right, drives the pipe, beats him mean- protects the stick from the trail check, takes a proper overhand high to low bouncer into the corner.  11-2 SB

off broken play, easty feeds bitzer on GLE, turns and shoots lefty off hip far pipe.  12-2 SB

hart taking faceoffs.  lucas rock BIG double to the blind side and takeaway, clear.  SHU fans upset with the calls and the camera is picking up the profanities.  SB flag on ellis, pushing.  SHU EMO, big save olivieri.  botched clear but sichenzia saves it.  SHU failed clear, SB zips passes upfield and easty is open on the crease, from shultz.  i think that's a socktrick for eastwood. 13-2 SB

big save olivieri, but rebound gets picked up on far crease, low to high off hip shot.  13-3 SB

jeff reh playing set offense.  beats his man, steps up top center, fires a 12 yard bouncer. 14-3 SB

illegal hit on easty, SHU flag.  SB EMO but SHU knocks a pass down and clears.  SB flag on chicquen, slashing.  SHU EMO, excellent sliding and rotating, forces an outside shot, save olivieri.  failed clear, offsides SB, ball goes the other way on a break and SHU scores.  14-4 SB

maciejewski in cage.  roros back on.  flag on rogers, push with possession.  SHU EMO, outside shot, save macie low.  SB clear and kills flag.  all curry.  end of Q3, 14-4 SB

beginning of Q4.

lindsay wins the face, fast break to bitzer on the point, big windup and shoots off hip far pipe. 15-4 SB

timeout SHU 1234 Q4

macie save on outside shot.  invert puts corpo behind, SHU curls around and shoots low to high. 15-5 SB

SB flag on chicquen, push.  SHU EMO, another nice save macie.  40 yard bomb to ellis, off to the races, big overhand jump shot and scores on a bouncer.  macie gets the assist! 16-5 SB

5min left.  lloyd and sheets on attack with sichenzia.  roros running with 1st mids, draws flag, SHU push with possession.  SB EMO corpo in corner of box, huge fake gets the keeper off the pipe, steps in and fires a rocket high stickside from 10 yards. 17-5 SB

Eastwood, who had seven of his nine points in the first half and had a career-high three assists, is now 24 goals away from surpassing fellow Canadian Jordan McBride, who holds the program record with 175.

His fifth goal came 19 seconds into the second quarter.

Stony Brook’s season opener displayed a team and star player in apparent midseason form. “We’ve got a veteran group,’’ coach Jim Nagle said, “so we plan to be a little more seasoned early in the season. I thought you saw that today.’’

Challen Rogers assisted on two of Eastwood’s goals. He and Eastwood could become the fifth and sixth Stony Brook players to total 200 or more points in their careers.

the team looked great tonight.  zipping the ball around on a rope- goalies, defensemen, mids, everyone.

tyler anderson should be your new favorite player.  all hustle and then some talent, size, and speed to go with it.

if any one criticism, slightly too many flags.  but that could be a function of first game jitters.

our starting attack- zero turnovers.  ben randall is a star in the making and is one game into his second year.  jeff reh is making a case for the preseason AA honor he received.

whats different about this year?  defense is much tighter, especially team sliding and recovering.  also, going to the well early and often.  lots of players out there today and we mustve ran 3 different poles (anderson, rees, abdellatif).  team speed is excellent, these guys are in shape.  fast breaks look in midseason form.  note that a lot defensemen nagle has brought in are LSMs; no surprise then that they can move the ball upfield and run the break.

17 goals on 14 assists, and only 38 shots.  good stuff.  perfect on clears and EMD, and that's not common.  GO SB

FEAR THE SEAWOLVES. Stony Brook looked impressive against Sacred Heart. SHU was coming into the game with a bit of juice after their win over Lafayette last week. But the Seawolves were hungry and they feasted on Tuesday.

Brody Eastwood, Stony Brook. Make sure the senior is well covered this year, otherwise you're going to see him all over the stat sheet. Eastwood exploded, bagging 6 goals and assisting on another 3 against Sacred Heart. 4 of Brody's goals came in the first quarter.

Nagle’s ball-movement-heavy offense and Stony Brook’s depth were on display as seven different players added to the scoreboard.

Stony Brook: Like many, I was eagerly awaiting the Seawolves debut and they didn’t disappoint. Brody Eastwood picked up right where he left off last year, notching six goals in the game. But the part of his stat line that jumped out at me was his three assists. The crafty Canuck had six assists during the entire 2015 season. He’s at the halfway point to matching those numbers already after one game. Eastwood is a goal scorer, a grip-and-rip guy, but if he continues to add helpers, even if its only 12-15 on the season he’s going to be even more dangerous.

COB was right on with his 1st game recap. Can't say enough about Reh. He might be better than advertised this yr. I noticed that they used him on some offensive sets. Also knee brace is gone, looks faster this year. In addition to Tyler  Anderson I liked what I saw from the freshman Rees. Give Nagle credit this team is big, strong, and athletic with speed. That senior class including Reh and Lindsay, who were redshirts , is outstanding. Just got to beat Albany.

need to take care of business tomorrow.  but today, here's what happened-

rutgers beat army, hartford beat BU; vt beat HC, sacred heart beat dartmouth, all good for SB.

ND pasted GT, but i dont think GT falls low enough from 13 for us to jump them.
mass exposed osu, not sure how fall osu will fall or if mass will jump in.  same for hofstra doubling up UNC.  and navy losing to JHU.
psu beat cornell so we likely take cornell's place if we win, and psu jumps us.  all guesses of course!

i think SJU has corpo's brother on the team and possibly russ bonanno's brother too.

hughes carries, gets pushed, SJU flag.  SB EMO, rogers feed to corpo on corner, big outside shot high to high from 15 yards.  1-0 SB

olivieri with back to back saves.  SJU drives the pipe on a shorty, and shoots high and outside, dejohn from debenedictis.  1-1

SB passing is a mess so far.  dejohn from x, beats randall topside and scores on a low to low end around. 2-1 SJU

SJU flag on corpolongo, SB EMO but SJU kills flag.  SB shooting goes cold and lots of misses.  nagle goes to the well early again with reh running offense, chicquen and daly, etc.  bitzer to x, feed to schultz and outside shot. 2-2

chicquen up top, drives left, shoots lefty bouncer on the run. 3-2 SB

curry with a well timed blindspot slide forces a bad shot and easy save.  rogers drives right pipe, feeds up top behind him to corpo, big outside 15 yard bouncer. 4-2 SB

philbin at the draw.  SJU flag for delay, SB EMO.  hughes feeds rogers up top, steps in for a long bouncer, gets deflected and goes in. 5-2 SB

end of Q1.

SB flag on rees for slashing, SJU EMO.  bonanno skips to opposite side of field to hanes, high shot from wing. 5-3 SB

SB timeout 906 Q2

sheets in.  schultz gets pushed from behind, SJU flag cross check skramko, SB EMO.  SJU kills flag.  sichenzia on.  SB flag on corpo, offsides, SJU EMO.  big inside save olivieri.  SB kills flag.

SJU slow break, another save olivieri.  SJU timeout 340 Q2

debenedictis inverts, leans into ellis and ellis gets flagged.  SJU EMO, rees knocks down pass and then gets flagged for slashing.  SJU EMO up two men, SB kills flags.

dejohn drives from x, skips up top to debenedictis, big windup and hits corner. 5-4 SB

SB timeout 103 Q2

rogers drives from wing, dips stick, shoots, but stepped in crease and waved off.  now SJU gets a flag on heller, and then SJU calls timeout. 013 Q2

SB EMO, end of Q2.  halftime.

looks like SB got beaten badly on GBs in the first half.  start of Q3, maciejewski starting in cage.

missed it (internet!) and schultz scores. 6-4 SB

macie with back to back inside saves.  rogers finds himself open up top, simple overhand bouncer into the low far corner, from corpo. 7-4 SB

reh picks up a gutsy GB in traffic, creates a break with speed, moves it to tyler anderson with the pole, overhand shot from up top, score.  first career goal? 8-4 SB

SJU timeout 710 Q3

SJU flag, slashing saunders, SB EMO.  rogers up top center, feeds left wing, hughes low to high, sticks a far corner.  9-4 SB

it sounds weird to say this- but jeff reh might be our most improved player from last season.  rogers backs his man in from the wing, creates space, and shoots low into the corner, hat trick. 10-4 SB

SJU flag, slashing skramko.  SB EMO, holds ball.

end of Q3.

easty is on and off, i think they might have chicquen (?) on to fill.

SB EMO to start the Q4, rogers lost a shoe, runs off, timeout SB 1439 Q4.

rogers steps in, feeds, hughes, 95 mph shot hits the crossbar high to high, and goes in and counts.  wow that had some velocity on it, EMO goal. 11-4 SB

daly on.  rock anticipates a pass while riding, creates fast break.  easty back in, reh running offense.  corpo wing dodges, and just like last week, beats his man, and the slide, and then properly tucks the stick to avoid the trail check, and gets an easy 5 yard bouncer at medium speed. 12-4 SB

dejohn at x, drives to GLE, rolls inside and gets off a low angle high to high shot. 12-5 SB

philbin at the draw.  SJU has a goal waved off for crease violation.  but he was pushed in, so SB flag on curry, SJU EMO.  rees knocks down pass, SB kills flag, big inside stuff macie.  sheets and sichenzia running with schultz.

internet stopped again
corpo scores. 13-5 SB
bitzer to easty. 14-5 SB
SJU changes goalies to danaher
SJU timeout 741 Q4

long defensive stand for SB as low % desperation shots go off.  rock slides to ball, gets takeaway but ellis gets called for a hold.  SJU EMO, macie save low on doorstep!  SB clear and kills flag.

SB timeout 107 Q4

fleming in cage for SB, talay, gerstner with a pole.  drive from wing, low to high shot from scannell goes in. 14-6 SB

buron, hart, daly out there.  fraietta, pedone.  game over. final: 14-6 SB
Title: Re: SB Lacrosse 2016 Season

some general thoughts-

-slides are timed so well and teams wont be able to back in and stand still against us.  rock and curry give us a nice size advantage down there

-reh, ellis, pugal, and robison are well conditioned and really shined today on defensive midfield

-the negatives today are flags (again) and getting blanked in the 2Q (4 flags).  their goalie did get hot maybe.  also they were up 9 GBs at some point.

-not sure if we have a goalie controversy but weve played three in each of two games.  i think we got 25 players on today.  coach is going to the well early, which is great because it leverages out depth and gives guys a rest.  also he isnt running a second line; he's mixing guys together with the first line so that they are ready for next year.

-its obvious that we generate from midfield this year instead of x (rooney).  our starting mids had 9,6 and they split time!

-14G on 26 shots again is a nation-leading type stat; however, 26 SOG on 38 total is not like us

SJU is really not as bad as the score indicated.  theyve got some players and kept us occupied for a half.  they just had too many flags.

yeah, solid win.  SJU hung around in earnest till about mid-third.

now that the boxscore is out, 37 players got on.  thats nearly twice of what we used to do.

turnovers from attack: 2 total  ;D

attendance good at 1322

cant say enough about jeff reh.  longtime fans will see that he is a true throwback (to 20-25 years ago), playing two ways, legitimately.  he's such a utility man that it'd be hard to categorize him as O or D.

daly got a lot of touches today with the first line.  chicquen too.  pugal seems to have slid into heavy rotation at SSDM.  great games from rees, anderson, reh.  note the opposing midfield starters were blanked.

macie, olivieri played great.  EMO great at 4/7, EMD better at 5/6.  corpo's brother at SJU is pretty good at the x.

albany lost to cuse, wont fall too too far though.  brown next.  they blew up QU and are ranked.  malloy and bellistri are going to be a problem.  larken kemp is an exciting LSM that pulls the trigger often- scored 1,2.  he runs the break and also they have another defenseman that registered two assists against QU.  so be prepared for breaks.  from poles.  but as a result, like albany- they turn the ball over a lot.  so we need to capitalize.  i wonder who will be on malloy.

— Stony Brook has been impressive en route to a 2-0 start. In wins over Sacred Heart and St. John’s the Seawolves have shot the ball very well at 41%. Goalie Zach Oliveri is stopping 65% of the shots he has faced. By beating St. John’s, Stony Brook snapped a two-year losing streak to the Red Storm. The Seawolves appear to have decent balance and while early look a lot like the 2010 Stony Brook team that made it to the NCAA Quarterfinals. Their game against Brown this weekend should prove to be a good measuring stick.

The America East. Is the AE the 3rd best conference right now? Lord knows all I do is shout about Vermont (they unloaded on Holy Cross on Saturday). But Hartford decided to shake up D1 when they dropped Boston U. this weekend and suddenly this conference has 4 really solid teams. Stony Brook v. Brown IN LONG ISLAND, might be the game of the day on Saturday.

IL top 25 players: http://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/quint-the-top-25-players-in-lacrosse/34086/3

of course these lists mean nothing, and also have questionable criteria.  but the ink is great.

Quote
15. Challen Rogers, midfield, Stony Brook
This British Columbia native is a monster at 6-4 and 220. After finishing the 2015 season with 53 points, Rogers got off to a productive start in 2016, tallying seven points in a recent win over St John's. He isn't a speedster; instead he uses a bump-and-run approach, capitalizing on his big frame. He has 158 career points, including 85 assists.

13. Brody Eastwood, attack, Stony Brook
Eastwood can score, evidenced by 153 career goals. With excellent game sense in the slot area, Eastwood reads defenses and knows where the soft spots will be. His shooting percentage could be in the 50 percent range.

exciting game today, though SB lost 16-14 to #9 Brown.

brown is an extremely physical team.  they capitalized on nearly every possession.  most of the time they didnt, it was their own doing.  they are very good and should win the ivy if they can beat yale.  who just destroyed maryland.

good crowd today.  SB came out fired up.  but literally right after every goal, bruno responded and scored.  it was 14-13 with about 3min left.  they didnt shut the door though until the last minute of the game though.

brown's offense is lethal; great ball movement, skip passes, shooting.  but today, faceoffs and goaltending carried the day.  ive never seen a goalie make cross-body saves like brown's did.  we properly shot the ball (most of the time) off stick side; he had so many saves.  especially in the first quarter.  he was even lights out when the sun was in his eyes- against a team that shoots 50%.

the reffing was pretty bad but not the worst ive seen.  brown roughed up SB quite often.

i was surprised to see so much offense generate with corpo and not rogers, hughes, bitzer.  schultz had a big game, easty couldnt get open, freeing up the middies to work up top.  we didnt go to the well nearly as much as the first two games.  robison got runs and played well on offense.  reh is clearly moving towards an offensive role (if not both).  i wouldnt be surprised if he only plays O next year.  he was great today.

brown #36 not only ruined us on the draw- but he created lots of breaks.  they run two poles on the faceoff.  and as everyone knows, they stay on the play offense.  brown scored quite a few trick shots today- backhands, underhands, no looks, etc.

brown might be a final four team this year and im nearly certain theyll be in the quarterfinal.  this is good that we played this much talent so early.  GO SB

Impressed with Brown- they scored on some outrageous shots. Molloy is a special player, he contributed on virtually all of their goals. Not a bad game by Stony Brook- it just seemed that Brown would score right when the game tightened up a bit. We were within a goal several times and I applaud the team for the fight.

Eastwood was neutralized the whole game- really an off game for him. Shultz had a great game. We gotta win more faceoffs- they did a great job at winning faceoffs and getting down the field to score quickly at multiple junctures.

Overall, I agree, Brown is a legit contender this year and this isn't a bad loss by any means. However its a game we have to win to start being taken as a serious contender nationally.

on to Fairfield, our first road game of the season.  they've been a solid team for quite a few years now.  word is they have some problems at the faceoff and shooting.  they also got scorched against bucknell in GBs and clearing.  sometimes these stats can be misleading so early in the season.  and apparently they give up lots of shots.

focus will be on bball, but ill be watching.  GO SB

looking at the boxscore- the good is that flags are way improved.  only one turnover on attack.  9 turnovers is a fantastic # and half were poles on clearing.  extra man was a ridiculously good 5/6.

we only played 22, which is still better than the old days, but also a reflection of the fact that brown is way better competition.  still a great practice to get so many bodies on the field and build experience and leverage your depth.

shooting 14/45 is good for any other team, average for us.  we had a rough time at the draw.  their starting attack got off a gargantuan 32 shots, which is a good day for certain teams.  we got beaten badly on GBs, mostly faceoffs.

one small complaint is that we typically failed to get off a shot during a play-on flag.  this ended up not being an issue because we converted so much on EMO, but id like to see us get off the free shot.

Quote
Takeaway: Perhaps the most anticipated game of the weekend in terms of offensive firepower didn’t disappoint. This contest proved to be the most entertaining. In the end the Bears emerged victorious in a matchup that could have gone either way.

Bonus Takeaway: Despite the loss there are many positives to take away for the Seawolves. On a day when they were dominated on face-offs (10-34) and one of their top scorers was blanketed Stony Brook had a great chance to still win this game. While Eastwood was shackled other players such as Matt Schultz (4, 3) and Alex Corpolongo (3, 1) stepped up to produce. The goalie combo of Zach Oliveri and Brandon Maciejewski combined for 18 saves, and the EMO took advantage of the Brown fouls to go five for six. Stony Brook will certainly continue to be a tough out for all opponents in 2016.

So nice to see younger guys pitching in and getting the opportunity to do so!

Macie looks good, but I think he guesses quite a bit - so it's an even better and more amazing looking save when he guesses right.  As long as he can continue to guess right, he'll be ok.
Not overly impressed with Oliveri yet - but maybe he is still getting used to new team. Technically, he is an incredible goalie.
Goalie #'s against weak opponents are good (as they should be!), but tough sked coming up.  I don't think they will be a difference maker in big games - we are going to have to rely on our O to do it for us.  Need better (and faster) clears to get ball up to O and out of defensive end of field.
Kind of slow, not overly exciting game today.
But love Reh and Randall!

Young guys need to keep doing what they are doing, and older guys need to figure out how to get things done.
I was optimistic a few weeks ago, but am a little worried if teams can shut down our incredible O.  We need them to figure it out, as on D I don't think we have the horses to pull us through.

RU is pretty good this year.  ranked, with a 5-0 record.  their talented goalie, kris alleyne, apparently has been on the bench in favor of a break-happy goalie, Edelman.  for some reason I think alleyne was back in cage at times.

on offense, bieda is the star, and mazzone is pretty good.  they've got a freshman canuck that scores a lot.  ive seen henningburg, George play, these guys are containable.  I think all together they didn't have much size on O, new players are bigger.  I don't know why trasolini hasn't lit up the board, as I thought he was one of their better players.  their offense seems to be all-attack at this point and the offense runs through bieda.

anyway, two of their poles total 2,3 so they push it in transition.  especially if Edelman is in.  the biggest loss for them was nardella at the X last year, who kept them in games.  solid wins over Fairfield and army, but otherwise didn't play the toughest teams.

former SB goalie Rob Camposa is an assistant coach.

should be a close one, it usually is.

looking at the stats- fairfield's mids were held to three goals on 21 shots.  so we are taking away good opportunities and making saves.

also good- our flags are way down.  got 21 players on.  macie had 6 saves in the fourth, he looks so poised and relaxed out there.  extra man was 0-2 which isnt awful but we have been leading the country in this stat.

start of Q1.  alleyne in cage for RU.  matt mankiewicz on the commentary, he's one of the best in the business.

bieda goal waved off (?).  roros, reh, and chicquen on in the second possession.  curry flagged for push with possession, not a great call.  rutgers EMO, bieda to trasolini up top, hits corner. 1-0 RU

trasolini dodges from wing and shoots five hole. 2-0 RU

SB flag on pugal, pushing with possession, another questionable call, RU EMO.  goal waved off (crease), SB clears.  all even, daly on.  fast pace.  SB is a mess.  charalambides off pick up top, lefty rocket, high off stickside. 3-0 RU

timeout SB. Q1 101

rogers shoots, rebound picked up by schultz, stick fake and score. 3-1 RU

end of Q1.

SB timeout, 1019 Q2.

SB flag, abdellatif, slashing, not sure about this one either.  RU EMO, save and clear.  sheets on.  oliveiri save, bieda gets rebound, goal waved off (?).  SB clear, hughes dodge, elbows into his man, RU flag (?), terrible call, SB EMO.  schultz at X, eastwood runs right up the alley, feed and bouncer low corner. 3-3

RU wins faceoff, runs it back to their goalie, bitzer knocks it loose, schultz picks up and behind the back on open net. 4-3 SB

SB coming alive.  corpo up top, high to high in corner, off stick side from 11 yards.  lefty. 5-3 SB

olivieri huge 4v3 save and clear.  SB timeout, Q3 112.

beginning of 3Q.  macie in cage, alleyne stays.

SB gets caught ball watching on a switch behind, open feed to crease and RU scores, and gets an SB flag, push from behind. 5-4 SB

RU EMO, man down faceoff, SB kills flag.  schultz at x, hughes drives pipe gets left open, shoots stickside high from a few yards, on the run. 6-4 SB

bitzer drives to x, over the top to hughes, big lefty sidearm from 13 yards goes in. 7-4 SB

jeff reh cleared the ball solo and it wont show up on the stat sheet, but he beat 4 men.  corpo shoots outside, 8-4 SB

charalambides drives from x, inside roll and scores, late slide. 8-5 SB

lindsay fast break, gets tripped up and draws flag.  SB EMO, schultz at x, to easty left open on the pipe, low to low. 9-5 SB

robison gets a takeaway on the GLE, clear.  sichenzia on.  corpo scores from wing. 10-5 SB

SB clearing is sharp for mid march.  rogers up top, stick fake, flips inside (no look again?) to easty on low crease, scores. 11-5 SB

rees legs out a big GB.  chicquen wing feed to bitzer on GLE, goes to 5&5, turn and shoot jump shot. 12-5 SB

reh drives into crease, literally gets hacked by 5 defenders, RU flag on alleyne.  end of Q3.

i think both of our keepers have been rather even in each game, so i expect more splitting halves.

SB clearing is very good.  for best in the country, see man up and assist %.

the first quarter was all RU, then the game flipped on its head.  they had key players not even get a SOG- two starting mids.  henningburg on attack got 1.  bench mids (george, scarpello), blanked on SOG.  all the forementioned totalled 1 SOG, 1 GB, zero points.

RU just plain missed the cage too much.  hit a few pipes but had an off night.  16 SOG of 32 total, that's awful.  they also really havent beaten any ranked teams to get to #16; army and fairfield are solid, givem that.

our starting 6 had seven turnovers, which is uncharacteristic, but high.  rogers' role has really changed this year, as he initiates less.  bitzer and schultz have filled in the rooney gap.  coach went to the well early and often again.  23 players got on.

btw third quarter, SB ground balls 12-2.

15. Stony Brook — The Seawolves and Hofstra square off on March 15 at Stony Brook for the Long Island Championship. This game will be spirited to say the least, between two squads who don't like each other and play distinctly different styles. Stony Brook owns wins over Sacred Heart (2-5), St. John's (1-6), Fairfield (2,5) and Rutgers (5-1). A two-goal loss against Brown is nothing to be ashamed of. It's a big week for Stony Brook, which also plays at America East rival Albany on Saturday.

12. Stony Brook: I’ve been high on the Sea Wolves all year and they just decimated previously undefeated Rutgers this week. Stony Brook surrendered the first three goals of the contest, and led 5–3 at half. The final tally was 15–6. For me this was a major test for both team, and the team from the Island passed with flying colors. Games against Hofstra and Albany this week will soon tell me how right or wrong I was to put Stony Brook this high.

8) Stony Brook – putting SBU outside your top 10 shows some sort of bias. They have a 16-14 loss to Brown, and 4 wins. If the top Hofstra this Tuesday, will the other voters start believing in Stony Brook?

Very excited about upcoming games!!

Not to get ahead of myself, but how do I confirm game time for game against Albany on  Saturday?  SBU site shows 1:00, but America East and Albany sites show 12:00.  Just want to be sure I have the right time - would hate to show up an hour late for that one.

Hopefully great weather and big crowd for tomorrow's game.  Should be a good one.  Go SBU!!

a good night for SB.  attendance was 1317, whereas 7 years ago when it was in april, it was over 5700.  and keep in mind that these are two top 15 teams at the faceoff.

defense.  byrne- blanked (with 7 TOs and 7 shots).  kupecky- blanked.  llinares- two goals.  von bargen scored twice, but on 8 shots with 2 TOs and a flag.  Hofstra managed one assist.

SB dominated time of possession with GBs and picking up rebounds and backing up shots.  the way they move the ball, no defense can keep up for 3-4min.

corpo continues to develop that weak hand; its pretty good.  reh continues to do all the things that might not show up on the stat sheet- and then also some of the things that DO show up on the stat sheet.  he's the ahmad walker of the lax team.

our size (on both ends) is becoming a factor.  would you dodge against curry or randall?

the trio of rees, abdellatif, and Anderson is working well at LSM.  I hope this is the new normal for SB, whereas most teams use one.

13G on 35 shots is very good (again), only 8 TOs, but slightly too many flags.  perfect clearing, but an uncharacteristic 0-3 EMO.  you can tell this team is practicing hard.  well done.

the Reh Bowl.

big game this wkd in the capital district.  should be sunny and cold.  we all know UA fans make it a hostile environment.  its often that UA and SB meet, not often that they are both ranked 10-15.  I predict a two goal game in either direction.

UA has played a slightly tougher schedule so far.  i've seen parts of games on tv.  they've been their usual score-happy selves except against the top teams (SU/MD).  word is that fields, who is still a finisher, has moved into more of a distribution role.  they generate from attack, but run many middie lines that push the ball.  oakes is a finisher.  Maloney is a GB machine.

as is usual, UA turns the ball over often (over 14/game), but that's attributable to their style of play.  they also force a lot of TOs.  the danes struggle at the X this year, under .400 (keep in mind cornell's massimilian and maryland's henningsen are amongst the best).

if I recall correctly, the poles have size (kluck, reh, burdette, sims, babcock).  lots of players from the same HS as ours- mason, penn yan, bay shore, sachem, rocky point, northport, and some Ontario/BC guys.  should be a spirited contest.

article on the Albany game- http://www.laxmagazine.com/college_men/DI/2015-16/news/031816_ncaa_notes_defense_setting_tone_for_richmonds_hot_start

also a mention of former seawolf Tom Monzo, who transferred to Richmond.

Quote
Stony Brook Sets Sights on Halting Albany's Streak

No. 16 Stony Brook (5-1) has not beaten in-state rival and 13th-ranked Albany since 2012, coach Jim Nagle's first season at the helm with the Seawolves.

The Seawolves, who open America East play on Saturday at Albany, have suffered all levels of pain at the hands of the Great Danes during a six-game losing streak that includes several blowouts and three defeats by a combined five goals. Albany has eliminated Stony Brook from the conference the past three years, including a 17-16 heartbreaker in overtime in the AE semifinals in 2014.

But, as Maryland showed with its impressive, 10-7 victory against the Great Danes on Wednesday, Albany (3-2) is adjusting to life without Lyle Thompson. Maryland dominated possession time, limited Albany to 23 shots and held the Great Danes to single goals in the second and fourth quarters.

Stony Brook has been known for years as a high-scoring unit, and the Seawolves are holding form with an average of 13.67 goals, fifth-best in the country.

But the defense is emerging. Stony Brook has held four opponents to six goals or fewer, has allowed only three, extra-man scores and is holding opponents to 22 percent shooting. Goalies Brandon Maciejewski (6.11 GAA, .695) and UMass transfer Zach Oliveri (8.67 GAA, .574) have split time very effectively.

"Can we play defense as well as Maryland did? That's the question, because Albany is still a very good team," Nagle said. "This is a big rivalry game. I don't need to tell our guys a whole lot about [Albany]. They don't need any Knute Rockne speeches before a game like this."

12. Stony Brook: The way the Seawolves are playing right now it’s totally feasible for them to hit their conference tournament with only two losses. i know lehigh is playing without eidenshank and that hurts, even if its one defenseman.

obviously a great first half from olivieri with highlight reel saves.  jeff reh got lots of work as LU seemed only to dodge against him.  lindsay created a lot of breaks and won a lot clean draws backwards- 11gbs.  rees, abdellatif, pugal, and anderson all supported.  also good to get the bench involved.

bitzer (5,1), hughes (3,3), rogers (2,5), corpo (2,1) really moved the ball well tonight.  even the announcers said that there isnt much dodging; its all getting open shots by moving the ball.  also an interesting comment about how nagle strings the team's sticks!!!

i think a real star tonight is tyler anderson- might be subtle, but he does nearly everything right, and he's all hustle.  5gbs, 1 goal, 1 CT, and all the other stuff that doesnt show up on the boxscore.

It's crazy to think that a D1 coach strings all the kids sticks but the announcer mentioned he wanted the ball to come out quick.  No bags allowed!!!

Stony Brook 16, Lehigh 6

The Seawolves blew out the Mountain Hawks behind a seven-point night from star Challen Rogers (2, 5) and a six-point night from Ryan Bitzer (5, 1). Lehigh never had a chance to get started in this game; it was all Stony Brook from the opening whistle. Lehigh’s first goal from Reid Weber at 8:37 to tie the game in the first quarter was as close as it would come to the Seawolves for the rest of the contest. Nothing went right for the Patriot League avians and everything went perfect for the aquatic canines. A goalie change couldn't salvage things for the Mountain Hawks, as Chris Kiernan finished with six saves, just one more than his replacement Adam Sawicki. Stony Brook (7-2) will face Vermont in Burlington on Sunday, April 3. Lehigh travels to Boston to square off with conference rival Boston University on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

sloppy game (both sides), of course the cold and the extreme wind was partially the cause.  we knew this was an improved VT this year, but they did hang around for about 3 quarters.

anderson had a good game today.  curry mustve cleared the ball himself 4-5 times.  but i think luke rock was the star today.  9 CTs is good for any squad.

two things we have to fix- cant get trail checked three times on breaks (should never happen), and even though we are a good GB team (in terms of #s), we have to stop standing and raking and take body and drive through the scoop.

i thought we did a relatively good job of keeping the easy goals away; but didnt do so well on covering outside shots.  the cats have a rising star in jack knight.

Rutgers pulls off big win against Hopkins, great for SB.  we need the knights to win a lot more.

Hofstra lost to Fairfield, but at least we beat Fairfield.  would help for them to get hot in the CAA.

9. Stony Brook — A 13-10 win over Vermont on Sunday was highlighted by Alex Corpolongo and Matt Schultz’s four goals apiece. Challen Rogers had four points. The Seawolves (7-2) two losses are to Brown and Albany. Long Island's finest have wins over Sacred Heart, St. John's, Fairfield, Rutgers, Hofstra, UMBC and Lehigh. RPI is a very stellar No. 8. Stony Brook is at Princeton (2-6) on Saturday in a must-win game for at-large consideration.

Not looking good for an at large:

So Stony Brook has a top-10 RPI, but a poor schedule strength and no notable triumphs. That won't get it done long term, even if the Seawolves probably are one of the country's 15 best teams in reality.

Title: Re: SB Lacrosse 2016 Season
Post by: frost on April 12, 2016, 09:29:20 pm
Few observations from the stands:

- SB played without any intensity tonight. Schultz generally pumps everyone up from what I've seen in past games, but these guys literally played like their collective girlfriends broke up with them them all last night. Flat-footed on offense, telegraphing passes on clears, not backing up shots, fundamental errors. It's the worst I've seen them play and at the lowest intensity all year. They gave the game away.

- The refs made a lot of bad calls that cost us the game, but in reality, it should have never been as tight as it was. We handed them a goal in the 4th by a poorly thrown pass behind our goal after Lindsay won the faceoff.

- Marist fans remind me of Red Sox fans. Low class, obnoxious sleeze bags. I had to scream at a pair of them to stop antagonizing one of our players' parents after Marist was flagged with an unsportsmanlike conduct.

Bottom line is that our guys did not show up to play. Marist played like it was their most important game of the year. Very disappointing.

Stony Brook might have torpedoed its at-large hopes with Tuesday’s loss to Marist. There just aren’t places for the Seawolves to help themselves prior to a possible rematch with Albany (presumably in a win-and-get-in America East final). …

Marist Downs Stony Brook in OT

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Syracuse wasn't the only ranked team to go down on Tuesday. Marist beat 15th-ranked Stony Brook 10-9 on a goal by Thomas Rago, just his second score of the season, after Gannon Marrison forced OT with 13 seconds left.

Stony Brook had led 9-8 with 4:22 to go on a Brody Eastwood finish of a Chris Hughes feed from point-behind. It was largely a nip-and-tuck affair with neither side leading by more than two goals throughout, and that only happened once when Challen Rogers put Stony Brook (9-3) up 5-3 midway through the third quarter. It was a one-goal margin for the rest of the game, with ties at 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Beautiful night for a game! Low tempo tonight as mentioned by many folks in the stands but the boys did their thing and got the 'W' --- can't believe the season is coming to a close already.

Anyone know where I might be able to purchase one of those SB Lacrosse "WATER THE ROOT" shirts? Saw one of the players wearing one today. I'd like to wear one when I run The Bench 5k in a few weeks.

Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend :)

18. Stony Brook — The Seawolves lost to Marist on Tuesday, 10-9, in overtime. Marist then lost to Manhattan on Saturday. The game featured eight ties. Brody Eastwood scored three goals, his 30th career hat trick. Turnovers were costly.

A win over UMass Lowell salvaged the week. All of Stony Brook's goals are still viable, but its RPI took a major hit dropping to No. 15. Stony Brook is at Binghamton this weekend.

Eastwood, a British Columbia native, scored a game-high five goals to lead Stony Brook to a 15-7 win over UMass Lowell on Saturday. Eastwood's fifth goal of the game was his 175th, tying him with Jordan McBride for the most in school history.

Patrick Fleming, Stony Brook: Stony Brook is battling for an NCAA Tournament bid out of the America East conference. The Seawolves senior unsung hero is Fleming. He was MVP goalie of the Suffolk County Championship game for Sayville High School and made 18 saves against Garden City in the LI finals. Initially Flemming went to NYIT...and transferred to SBU after a year.

Fleming is supportive but also holds his teammates accountable to the standard.

"He is one of the hardest working, most positive kids I have ever coached," said Seawolves coach Jim Nagle. " He works harder than anyone in the weight room, is supportive to everyone, tough as nails, and accountable. Patrick wants to be a coach someday. He is an absolute treat to coach. I actually started him a couple of games on attitude alone."

20. Stony Brook — A No. 17 RPI and wins over Rutgers and Hofstra have the Seawolves looking less like an at-large team and more like a squad in need of the America East AQ. The loss to Marist hurts. Sunday was a record-setting day for Brody Eastwood. The senior from BC broke Jordan McBride's school record for career goals. He now has 178 goals in 64 games. Challen Rogers had six points and surpassed the 200-career point plateau. He doesn't get enough respect nationally. Rogers also from BC has recorded 50 or more points in three straight seasons. SBU handled Binghamton 16-11 scoring the first seven goals of the contest. Overall, they nailed five with the extra man. The Seawolves play Hartford on Sunday. A date with Albany looms.

13. Stony Brook (11-3): Like Syracuse, the Sea Wolves beat Binghamton this week. This was a bigger deal for SBU though because it was a conference game. Their only loss in the America East is to Albany. A re-match in the championship game is likely, but not inevitable.

With both players starting since their freshman year, rooming with one another and hailing from British Columbia, the tandem of senior attackmen Brody Eastwood and midfielder Challen Rogers has grown side by side to produce two of the most storied careers in Stony Brook lacrosse history.

Rogers’ facilitation, which pegs him as the team-leader in assists, seamlessly complements the finishing ability of Eastwood, who led Division I lacrosse in shot percentage for three straight years.

19. Stony Brook — A 16-8 win on Senior Day for the Seawolves puts them into the America East semifinals. Challen Rogers dished out three assists. Stony Brook hit a ton of pipes but stayed the course and didn't panic. Seniors scored 17 of the 25 points. Matt Schultz finished with five goals for the second consecutive game. Taking 51 shots is impressive. They ended the game on a 10-2 run and even got a goal from Nick Roros, a freshman, for his first career banger. Stony Brook has won 24 straight games when holding opponents under 10 goals. SBU plays Vermont on Thursday in Albany. Vermont has won eight games this year, its most since 2001.

some analysis... of course it gets ahead of the VT game. http://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/sector-spdrs-may-madness-previewing-the-conference-tournaments/35054

Quote
America East: Can Stony Brook beat Albany?

Albany’s place in the NCAA Tournament field seems secure. Can Stony Brook topple the Danes and earn a spot of its own?

Albany has won 28 straight games in America East play and is clicking on all cylinders. The Danes had a fairly easy win against Stony Brook back in mid-March; it won't be easy for the Sea Wolves, especially with the confidence Albany is playing with right now.

What is this mentality like for Albany compared to last year’s? There was never any doubt they had the best player on the field when Lyle Thompson was wearing the Purple and Gold. You could argue they still do in Blaze Riorden — but having a standout player who can stop the other team, vs. having a weapon to attack is a different mentality. But rising into the Top 5 (something that never happened with the Thompsons), beating Yale and getting to this point in the post-Thompson era has to have the Danes brimming with confidence. It’s easy to look at a near-upset by UMBC as a letdown, but it’s games like those that average teams will let go and very good teams pull out. This year’s Danes are anything but average.

Don’t Sleep On: Vermont

The Catamounts are 8-7 and back in the tournament for the second straight year. Eight wins is their most since 2006.

Ian MacKay is an easy place to start when looking for the possible upset. He has the sixth longest streak in DI (points in 44 games). He’s third in the America East in points per game (4.36), and the Catamounts’ are seventh in assists per game (7.93). In the semifinal against Stony Brook, there could be some offensive fireworks with these guys on the field.

But don’t sleep on Jon Kaplan, who was named America East defender of the week with 13 saves against Binghamton.

Player to watch: Challen Rogers, M, Stony Brook

Rogers is the third Seawolf in the last 15 years to earn four all-conference nods. He's scored 20 goals and tallied a career-high 36 assists. Rogers is fourth in school history in points (202) and second in assists (112). Simply put, he’s one of the best midfielders in Division I lacrosse, and he would be a household name if he were on ESPNU a bit more.

Challen Rogers is 4th all time in pts for a middie with 208. Kevin Crowley is second behind Gary Gait. Myles Jones could pass Crowley and Deemer Class could pass Rogers if Duke makes a run. Someone needs to tell ESPNU about those numbers. They just posted a graphic on D-1 middies career pts and once again either forgot or choose to ignore the fact that SB's middies rank that high. We knew about Crowley but quite impressive for Rogers.
