The reigning America East champions won't be going anywhere in 2015. Some even say they may the dark horse for the entire NCAA Division I bracket. When people think of top DI teams, they immediately jump to Maryland and their former ACC opponents, but they usually don't think of any teams from the America East. The Seawolves could just be one of those thought-of teams this year.
They were primarily in the conversation last season because of their goalie Frankie Caridi who finished the season with the best save percentage and goals-against average, subsequently creating the best scoring defense in Division I. However, Caridi graduated, leaving a huge hole for coach Joe Spallina to fill. Yet from their starting lineup, only two field players in addition to their goalie graduated, providing a lethal lineup for the 2015 season. They returned three of four defenders, 90.8 percent (227 of 250) of its goal scoring, and top midfielder Michelle Rubino who captured a team-high 49 draw controls. Who's in the cage is really their only concern. Joining the Seawolves staff for next season to help solve this issue are All-Americans and Tewaaraton contenders Demmianne Cook and Alyssa Murray.
Last year was a banner season for the Seawolves, advancing to the NCAA Tournament before falling to Syracuse by seven goals in the second round. Starting three freshmen all year (leading scorer Courtney Murphy, plus Kristen Yevoli and Dorrien Van Dyke), they clinched the America East title for the second year in a row with 7-1 crushing blow to Albany. Stony Brook finished with 17 wins, which is tied for a single-season program record.
Michelle Rubino, Stony Brook, Sr., M #1
A true power player for the Seawolves, Michelle Rubino will be key to the team's success in her senior campaign. She returns as a team captain and member of the All-America East first team and all-conference championship team. She tallied 59 points from 37 goals and 22 assists, but was a mainstay in the midfield grabbing 43 ground balls, 49 draw controls (team high) and 30 caused turnovers (league high). With coach Joe Spallina also as the head coach of MLL's New York Lizards, it has been said his college team embodies characteristics of how his MLL team plays. If this statement is true, Rubino would be a prime example.

Albany-Stony Brook Rivalry
When you examine a team like Albany in the America East, you can't help but mention their rival, Stony Brook. Since 2012, Joe Spallina's first year at the helm of the Seawolves program, the two teams have duked it out in the conference championship.
Last year, Stony Brook captured its second crown in program history, topping the Great Danes for the second consecutive year in their third-straight meeting in the title game.
But could 2015 be the year Albany makes a comeback? Although the Danes are young, Spallina said they are "revitalized offensively" and "pretty prolific scoring wise." They graduated some key players, including Kathleen Lennon, Ariana Parker and Allie Phelan, but Albany seems to be reloading, rather than rebuilding.
Given the shakeup of the Nike/LM rankings so far this season, and if all continues to go well for Stony Brook and Albany, the lacrosse community may see two teams representing the America East in the NCAAs come May. Albany just beat Notre Dame on Tuesday night.
"We're both successful teams and organizations and I think there's respect on both sides of the ball," said Battaglino, whose team will play the Seawolves on April 4. "I consider Joe a friend of mine. He's a great coach and a good person. I look at it as a game where we're going to be tested. They know what we're going to bring and we know what they're going to bring."
Both New York staples, the schools' rivalry extends beyond the lacrosse program. It has been built over years of tradition in the same conference. "It's a lot what's right with college athletics and having that natural rival," said Spallina.
"It's healthy. It's nice that it's called a rivalry," added Battaglino. "Both have been quality teams deserving to represent the league at the NCAA tournament over the past several years."

http://laxmagazine.com/college_women/DI/2014-15/lm_rankings
up one spot to 14 for beating jacksonville.
Yet a few upsets across the board caused some other rankings to shift around. James Madison topped Penn State, while Loyola handed Virginia yet another loss. Delaware dropped out after falling to Temple and Villanova, but Stony Brook continues to impress as they turn to face Florida on Tuesday.
Who's Hot?
Stony Brook (+1): The Seawolves are one team that no one can count out. They topped Notre Dame pretty handily, and blew Jacksonville out of the water. The first true test will be Florida on Tuesday.
-
Our Ladies just knocked off Number 6 Florida tonight 12 -11 at Florida. This team is a legit contender now. Other coaches please take note what Spinella has built .

Huge win for the program...I wish the boys team could know off a top 10

theyll get a chance with duke in a month.
and who knows, with princeton and likely albany in the future, that is three top 15 games.

id say they are a national title contender, but have some reservations because as weve seen in the past, after the first 4-5 teams, there is a HUGE dropoff. or at least thats the way its been over the last few years.
doesnt mean it cant happen!

ILWomen’s Halley Quillinan (@hrquillinan)
Joe Spallina — Since Terry already touched on my overwhelming excitement about this month’s cover (You HAVE to check it out — I’ve been like a kid on Christmas morning waiting to unveil this beauty), I’m going to venture off the Maryland trail and say Joe Spallina.
Talk about a whirlwind week for the Stony Brook women’s head coach. On the heels of the Seawolves’ dominating performance over Notre Dame last week, his team traveled south to Florida this week and topped Jacksonville, 13-4, on Sunday afternoon. After the Jacksonville win, Joe traveled back north after receiving news that his wife was in labor. After meeting his beautiful baby girl, he traveled back down to Florida just in time for last night’s game vs. No. 7 Florida.
The Seawolves dominated from start to finish and never looked back, topping the Gators, 12-11. Spallina traveled back north early this morning after his team made history last night. He gets to celebrate with his family and its newest member, Olivia, upon his return home. Not a bad week.

13. Stony Brook (7-0) beat No. 8 Florida 12-11, beat New Hampshire 13-4. Next: vs. Rutgers, Wednesday.
Stony Brook posted a solid win over New Hampshire, showing no hangover effects from its big win over Florida earlier in the week. Leading just 5-4 early in the second half, Courtney Murphy scored her third goal of the game to ignite an eight-goal run that closed the game for Stony Brook. New Hampshire became the sixth team to be held to six goals or less by Stony Brook in the Seawolves 7-0 start.

Freshman Kylie Ohlmiller is the real deal for Stony Brook, leading her squad with 29 points. (Stony Brook Athletics)
This past week could win an award for the most exciting results in the 2015 season. Boston College is officially the only ACC team remaining that is undefeated and Stony Brook breaks into the top 10 after an impressive showing against Florida.
Who's Hot?
Stony Brook (+6): Last week was a whirlwind for Seawolves coach Joe Spallina, but it was all worth it. Stony Brook shook Division I women's lacrosse with their upset against Florida, proving they finally deserve a spot in the Top 10. The Seawolves earn the edge over Virginia with their undefeated record. (Stony brook topped Florida 12-11. The Gators fell by one to Syracuse in overtime. Virginia lost by one to Syracuse in regulation.)

-
they could be closer to a national championship than any team on campus. well done!
-
Jesuuuus... Beating a legendary program today. Amazing. Go get it girls. Been proving all season that they are playing at an elite level. Its going to be exciting to watch how they perform in the NCAAs... at this point I'm not afraid to say they have earned an at-large bid into the NCAAs and baring bad losses they should have a home game and a great seed to open the tourney. Great JOB ladies!!!
It would be amazing feat for Spallina to conquer Divison I only four years after joining the ranks. Impressive what this guy has been doing here at Stony Brook.

Now to get some of our other coaches to take notice what can be done.

Seawolves are now 4-1 over nationally ranked teams and 2014 NCAA Tournament qualifiers.
"Landmark win. Landmark win. It's monumental. I've never been prouder of a bunch of kids. We played yesterday up in Vermont, bussed back. This is special. I'm not going to try and twist it a different way. Every one of our girls grew up watching Northwestern win national championships. We were playing more than them. We were playing the brand, too."
Stony Brook is 9-0 at home in 2015.
RPI is currently #4. Albany is good though, and wont go away easily during tourney time. http://www.laxpower.com/update15/binwom/rating01.php

Is Stony Brook Final Four Bound?
Kylie Ohlmiller was a sophomore at Islip High when she made the 30-minute drive to Stony Brook's Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium to watch Northwestern win the 2012 national championship.
Over 60 minutes on that same field Sunday, Ohlmiller helped Stony Brook stop the seven-time national champions Northwestern for an 11-9 win.
The win throws the No. 5 Seawolves (13-1) right into the national championship contender picture. They have won first-round NCAA tournament games in each of the previous two seasons, but haven't gone further.

HOW STONY BROOK -- YES, STONY BROOK -- BECAME A LACROSSE POWER
So final four or bust? Stony Brook athletic director Shawn Heilbron, who last year extended Spallina's six-figure contract through 2019, is on board. "You can't help but cheer for them and feel they can take on the world because they've proven they can accomplish whatever they set their minds to," Heilbron said. " It's been magical, and the great thing is, this is no one-year wonder. This is just another step for Stony Brook. This program is built to last."
-
Very disappointing outing today. What a shame. I was really high on this team. It seems like every great team we have is simply not ready for Big Time. This was our chance for the ladies to show off that they have arrived. It didn't turn out as we wanted. We are gonna have to wait another year to find out. We firmly believe in Coach S. capability of building great programs. I hope this is just a stepping stone along the way and not a major setback.
Best of luck to the ladies in the offseason. Study hard and get right back next year!
-
They had a great season but for whatever reason got tripped up . Ladies Softball went down the same path losing two in a row to Binghamton after a dominating season in AE play. I'm concerned about baseball it seems we cant get over the hump after looking so good all season.
-
painful. keep your heads up ladies, have a bigtime freshman and next year's class looks great.

painful. keep your heads up ladies, have a bigtime freshman and next year's class looks great.
Painful is an understatement. I attended the game yesterday and couldn't believe my eyes. I am not making excuses, but the officials at this game were horrible! Not that any game should be decided by officials but.please, they were calling every touch a cross check On SB. Another disturbing problem I am having is with the Princeton students/fans. There were about 6 of them that had their shirts off with the sprayed on letters running around Lavelle cursing and screaming at SB fans and being escorted by security, almost causing a fist fight in front of me and my kids. I guess the Patriot league lowered their standards! !!
-
Good thing Princeton is in the Ivy League then.
-
In order to take the next step, the team needs to improve their overall speed.

UWLX plans to kick off with teams in Massachusetts, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. This summer, each team will select its first five elite-level athletes to create a UWLX All-Star Team that will compete in tournaments during the summer and fall. The four teams will draft their complete 17-player rosters before the beginning of the first season, in the spring of 2016. All operational expenses will be covered by UWLX, which hopes to model its approach on similar burgeoning women's professional team sports.

4. Stony Brook
Number of Starters Lost: 3
Starting Goalie Graduate? No.
Percentage of Point Production Lost: 19.05%
The 2014 season made program history – and they only graduate three seniors. The Seawolves have been known to do well with such a young squad and although they had a slipup against Princeton in the second round, they will be coming back more determined than ever with a chip on their shoulder. They only lose 19 percent of their point production, which includes Michelle Rubino who was ranked fifth on the team offensively. Kylie Ohlmiller, one of three freshman Tewaaraton nominees in 2015, returns alongside Courtney Murphy, Dorrien Van Dyke and Taylor Ranftle. Plus for one of the top defenses in the country, Stony Brook graduates only two defenders and returns all of their goalies.
