Title: SB vs Albany 5/1 730pm
Post by: Chairman of the Board on April 28, 2014, 09:10:12 am
Though the game is at LaValle, the Seawolves are the road team by virtue of the fourth seed.  Playing #1 Albany, who just blew up #2 Binghamton, is a replay of an earlier contest that SB lost by 10 goals.  AE bracket here: http://www.americaeast.com/pdf9/2699888.pdf

Albany has won five in a row and no one in the conference has come close.  BC hung around for a while but the Danes opened it up and won by 4.  In five games, theyve scored 91 goals against AE opponents, for a staggering 18.5 GPG in conference.  Hartford did the best with 15 surrendered.

Which brings me to- how then did Canisius hold them to 10?  Better get that game film...

It should be rainy and cold, though the rain might stop by game time.

While AETV will air the semis, ESPNU will show the Finals.  GO SB

I'll be watching. Lets go Seawolves. Our boys have nothing to lose so leave all in the field!

If I'm Albany, I'm not happy with this draw. We're a dangerous team, way moreso than the record indicates, and we're at home. If we can control the face-offs (shouldn't be too hard) and watch the turnovers, Albany's in for a game.

Quote
Here's something scary about Stony Brook-Albany in the semifinals of the tournament: Albany's offense ranks third nationally in efficiency; Stony Brook's defense ranks 64 nationally in efficiency. The Seawolves' gigantic possession margin advantage means next to nothing if Stony Brook plays to script against the Danes. Just look at the truncated tempo-free profiles: The Seawolves are yielding -- on a 100-possession basis -- to their opposition almost as many goals as the Danes are scoring -- on a 100-possession basis -- against their opponents. That's the formula for a bloodbath, one that could see the Great Danes mirror their 17-7 shellacking of Stony Brook from earlier in the season. The Seawolves need to find a way to create defensive stops, and a major factor in determining whether Stony Brook can create those stops is in how the Seawolves and Danes control and create off-ball movement when Albany has the bean: Stony Brook's defense ranks 63rd in defensive assist rate (assists per 100 defensive opportunities); Albany's offense ranks first in offensive assist rate (assists per 100 offensive opportunities). The quality of shots that the Seawolves give up will ultimately dictate whether the team's defense can give Stony Brook enough to compete with Albany.

Win f/o's, attack the cage and shoot a high percentage. Same formula as last yr's semi-final but with a better f/o man. The difference this yr is that Rowe can dominate. Your not going to stop them, so you have to put it on them early and try to take them out of their gm. Spinning the ball around and trying to eat up the clock won't work.

Bingo loses to BC 16-10.

i think we all agree that we needed a game plan to beat UA.  so what have we done different so far?  for starters, first UA clear we pressed on the ride, caused a turnover, luca scores.  then possession, rogers dodge and score.  UA shoots within seconds, get the ball back, sit on it.  busted another UA clear on the ride.  long possession.  rooney wing dodge and score.  so far so good.

broke another UA clear, got flagged, big EMD save on thompson (does it matter which one?).  clear, timeout SB.  Possession, flag, possession.  lost ball, but broke up a UA fast break.  inside save against thompson.  clear.  9 minutes and we have the ball at least 7min, maybe 8.  backed up a UA shot, SB ball.

we look like a top 10 team, methodical.  we are all thinking we shouldve done this all year.  and for the good quarters against Rutgers, MD, Duke, etc, i think we did.

one v one defense very solid.  team playing loose.  another inside save against thompson.  clear, possession.  slow break (dont see those anymore!), hughes to sichenzia for a 10 yarder.  4-0.  rowe wins, possession.  second mids.  patient O.

ive asked all year for a quarter with no goals surrendered.  good time for it!!!
Title: Re: SB vs Albany 5/1 730pm

thompson drives from x, for some reason our defender had his stick downfield, behind the back goal.  rowe wins the faceoff, long possession, rogers feed inside to easty for a score, and a flag that stays.  5-1

thompson drives from x and turns and shoots with 1 sec left, scores, 5-2.

end of Q1, and the danes mustve had the ball for 3-4min.

new look with a zone in Q2.  UA zone O is to flood crease and feed from behind.  thompson drives from X and inside roll, scores.  we are sliding late, which could be purposeful.  another behind the back from thompson.  next possession for UA they score from the wing, mid range shot.

most UA goals have been drive from X, rocker step, behind the back or inside shot.  timeout SB.  5-5

2 turnovers already by Andreassi leading to  2 Albany goals. I'm sure there are more turnovers to come by this kid.  There is no way he should be on the field!

UA really started to move the pace to their liking.  another thompson behind the back.  for some reason our defenseman put his stick downfield again.  with thompson actually standing in the crease.  6-5 UA

rodgers inside roll and scores inside.  seconds mids, stall violation, UA scores.  7-6 UA.  rooney feed to schultz, goal waved off.  thompson scores.  curry scores on break of faceoff, 8-7 UA.  UA fast break, score.  UA timeout.  halftime, 9-7 UA.

great first quarter, not so great second quarter.

beginning of Q3, back to man defense.  another big save for johnstone.  schultz drives from x and scores lefty.  second mids, long possession.  UA gets the ball, good slide but no second slide, and UA scores inside again, 10-8 UA.  rooney feed from x to schultz for quickstick, score from no angle.  schultz off for sichenzia.

thomspon again drives from x and scores inside.  slides coming way earlier to the thompsons now, so thats an adjustment.  11-9 UA.

save johnstone, SB clear, andreassi drive from wing, scores and flag.  11-10 UA.

Title: Re: SB vs Albany 5/1 730pm

huge save johnstone.  we are starting to force the ball into the crease.  rooney hangs up his defender at x, feed up to hughes against an invert zone, scores bottom left corner on a roll dodge.  tied at 11.

UA scores off a broken play on a 6v5, 12-11 UA.

slide timing is better.  huge save for johnny.  failed clear, UA scores on broken play.  13-11 UA.  miles has 7.

SB flag delay of game.  killed flag.  slides are now so early that its more of a double team and less of a replacement.  UMBC in the far stands watching the game.

I wish i could understand lacrosse more. I hear the commentators say  they both have a "Short stick" or he has a "long stick". What do they mean. Is it the length of the stick itself or the way they are gripping the stick?
Title: Re: SB vs Albany 5/1 730pm
Post by: Chairman of the Board on May 01, 2014, 09:17:31 pm
UA flag, killed.  two men slide to thompson, they feed crease and score.  14-11 UA.

the short stick is 4 feet; the long is 6.  the goalie is in between.  youre allwoed (excluding the goalie) 4 longsticks, they can go anywhere execpt the opposing crease.  offisdes rules are 4 men have to be behind the half line, 3 ahead.

UA scores mid range, largest lead now at 15-11 UA.  end of Q3.

threw away a break.  second mids again.  UA pressing the hands.  long possession.  bitzer to andreassi mid range wing shot.  15-12 UA.

hughes invert, drives from x, cross crease feed to schultz for inside bouncer.  15-13 UA.

a defensive stand!  clear and broken play, easty picks up garbage and stuffs home lefty from the crease on a jumper. lucky goal for SB.

id have to think the retreivers are pulling for the seawolves.

rowe wins the face, drives to the GLE, then to the cage and dives past the crease with a reverse handed score- flag, waved off, goal is good.  SB looking like UA.  four in a row.  tied at 15.  8min left.  rowe wins the next draw.

rooney with huge grounders all day.  its a real talent.  long possession.  lose ball, press ride.  flag against luca for a high hit.

short stick on lyle for UA EMO.  UA taking outside shots for some reason and missing cage.  big save for johnny.  runs up clear, pushed, flag on UA.  play on.  5min left tie game.  long possession, SB throws it away, goes man up.

andreassi from the wing, bouncer through the five hole from 12.  wisely shot off screen.  16-15 SB, 334 left.

rowe wins draw, timeout SB.  the swolves keeping the ball out of a stick of a thompson.

SB stalling.  shot clock on.  UA push, flags down, SB goes man up.

well good luck to UA in teh finals and here's to hoping that we carry this momentum into next year.  we looked great at times, notably the 1st and 4th.  nevertheless, this was a painful loss at home to an arch rival.

the positives- defnese was good at times.  johnny had a big game, so did rowe.  i thought curry stood out.  luca held ty to 0, 1.  we made halftime adjustments.  slide timing improved over the game.  spread the ball out on offense.  rooney's clutch grounders.

negatives- second slides were weak.  defensemen on the GLE with the stick downfield.  losing the ball to a short stick wtih 1min left.  gave miles with 15 shots.  failure to cover open shooter in crease in overtime.  15 turnovers.  easty trimmed the mullet.

all in all, we played better than normal and it was a good day for SB.

Great atmosphere at the Brook tonight, crowd was loud and stayed into it the whole time. Take away the t/o's and that is the kind of effort that they need to play with at all times. They showed some stones coming back in the 4th at 4 down. Lucaturto played a great gm, he was physical, fast and looks like he is going to be a real player. Curry also played a nice gm. Shultz and Hughes played huge as well as Johnstone. This guy gets a lot of flack on this board, and sometimes unwarranted, but Andreassi played the best gm of his career. He showed toughness, and leadership and will be a factor next yr. Rooney besides his pts had some big gb's ( so much for their upperclassman ego's) And between the Thompson's and Rowe I saw some of the sickest goals scored tonight.

Hopefully we'll get 'em next year. I'll say that if Nagle hasn't turned around this program next season...now that this "very young" team has some experience...it's time to start searching.

Hopefully?  You see what they got coming back?  You see what Albany, Binghamton, UMBC, Hartford have coming back.  Stony Brook has total of five goals from the senior class.  I'd say they'll get them next year

well we will need a new thread for this discussion... but what is the status on rowe?  returning?  leaving?

what everyone is thinking is- ty and myles are gone (total 142 points and counting).  myles rang the bell seven times last night.  so is feuerstein (he's good), eich, marrapese, newhouse, and futia (possibly their best defender).  hartford and bingo graduate more than a few players too.
