Some people over at the America East board are seriously underestimating how good Dougher is. After the Illinois game in 2010, Bruce Weber said Dougher might have been the best shooter Illinois faced all year.

...I dont know man... I am not quire sure if he deserved to be pre-season all america east... but again, thats only projections (as he told me himself yesterday). Hopefully he can prove it this upcoming year and show us all he got!

When Bryan is  on he can be devasting to a defense. He is also  a big clutch player especially on the foul line.

Bryan Dougher has been instrumental in turning this program into a consistant contender for a championship every year since he got here. He has been both clutch and tough without ever complaining about injury. If anyone doesn't  understand the value of his leadership and appreciate what he means to this team shame on them. Eveyone on the America East Forum hates SBU anyway so they can all go suck eggs!

Agreed on Dougher. That said, he isn't a carrier like John Holland was at BU. Every time the team relied on him solely it lost. Not a knock on Dougher's skill as a player, but a perimeter shooter is easy to double cover if he's the only weapon on the court.

With Brenton's return, Bracey causing havoc, and Hayes as a second sharpshooter, I see Dougher poised for his best season ever this year.

I think Dougher is being over-hyped here. His FG % last year was 34%, well below the team average, and hardly respectable under any circumstances.

I'm not trying to overhype him but he is one of the best shooters in the league. Opposing coaches first priority was to stop dougher. Obviously he was going to have trouble when getting d'ed up by Jeremy Lamb and his 7' 2" wingspan. And he doesn't make mistakes. I've rarely seen a Stony Brook loss and thought I wished Bryan did something different.

SBU will have plenty of tight games this year and I want the ball in Bryan's hands with the game on the line. Especially, if we are trying to protect a lead. I want him on  the foul line. That is a value that is not being over hyped. All the criticisms on the AE Forum must have been missed by all the coaches. I guess the coaches are all blind and don't understand the game like the posters.

You have a point. If the coaches elected him as a Preseason All-America East they must know something we don't know or haven't yet noticed about Dougher. Again, Criticism doesn't matter right now. The important thing is that he shows all he has this last year.

One thing to look for this year:  I wouldn't be surprised if at times Pikiell puts Jackson (or even Rouse) at the PG so that they can go with shooters on both wings (Hayes and Dougher), along with two bigs.  If there's a way to run Dougher off the ball at times, I think it will help him get easier shots......I'm also wondering if anyone has any info on the scrimmage yesterday against Central Ct. State University?

It's going to be an interesting season. There are a lot of guys on this roster that deserve to see significant minutes and probably could on most other teams in the conference. I definitely like the idea of having Dougher play off ball. You're not losing anything at pg as far as creating for others by playing Rouse or Jackson at the 1 and moving Dougher to the 2. I'm hoping Rouse has a big season. I watched him shoot around after practice while rehabbing from his knee surgery last year and he is automatic from within 20 feet. I'm sure a lot DI guards are but it was a really impressive shoot around to me.

I wouldn't be so quick to move Dougher off the ball. As someone who has seen many years of SB hoops...and no disrespect to any former players...the stability and high bball IQ that Dougher has brought to the backcourt has been a huge factor in digging SB up from the bottom of D1 hoops.

I wasn't following Stony Brook basketball before Dougher got here, but from what I've heard/read he was exactly we needed. Not flashy, but doesn't make mistakes and plays solid fundamental basketball. I've seen some guys over on the America East board criticize Dougher's defense which is strange because I've never thought of Dougher as a liability on defense. Does anyone else agree because I feel like I'm taking crazy pills listening to the posters talk about him over there. Outside of coaches opinions, he must be the most underrated player in the conference.

I think I would like to see Dougher get 30+ minutes and play something like 10 of them of ball, but I'm no coach.

sbufan...agree with u 100%. What went on over on the other board for a brief time was nonsense. Most of those guys are pretty rational, but a couple of them went off the reservation when their guys didn't make pre-season all conf...like anybody gives a crap (incl the players who either did or didn't make it). The stuff on his defense is ridiculous too...he's no ball hawk and doesn't have great foot speed...but he works hard and plays a very acceptable level of d (and takes charges and is first on the floor for every loose ball). Tough kid.

Dougher is a solid player, and believe me, he is the best player to run the point.  However, I am only suggesting that during games it will benefit him and the team when he can be moved off the ball for a few minutes.  He's the best shooter besides Hayes, but he needs shots created for him (screens, etc.) in order for him to shoot a better % (like his Soph. year as opposed to last year).  Also, giving him a break from primary ball-handling responsibilites will keep him fresher over the long haul.  Dougher/Hayes on the wings is a very good situation along with either Jackson or Rouse initiating the offense (if it's Rouse, you really have some shooters out there, and Jackson isn't a bad shooter either).....as to his defense, he's not an elite defender, but is certainly adequate.  His willingness to take charges and get on the floor make him a better defender than his physical ability translates to.  In all fairness though, I'd prefer to have Jackson, Coley or Rouse guarding Irving/Black/DeLaRosa with the game on the line.....

Quick...agree all points. Does seem like they try to get him a few minutes off the ball and usually for the reason u mention...give him a breather.  Also agree that with Hayes ready from game one, the addition of Bracey, Rouse, Coley, AND the return of Brenton...a lot more available firepower to take some of  the heat off Dougher.

During 2009-2010, El-Amin drew all the attention from defenses.  This allowed Dougher to move off the ball, work off screens and get some open looks at the hoop.

Last year when when Martin was out for a few games Dougher was forced to become the primary offensive weapon, which simply is not his game.  He isn't the type of guard who uses speed and power to break through a double team.

I think Bryan is going to have an outstanding year now that there are plenty of other offensive weapons around him to keep defenses busy.

So now that the season is over. Will Dougher and Brenton be on the first team? I surely think they can. Dougher has done a great job this senior year and Brenton also.

Interesting question in regards to both players.  As we all know, winning teams usually get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to post-season awards; a player must really put up huge numbers to be selected 1st team when his team doesn't have success.  That said, for my money (I seriously doubt this is what the league's team will look like, but...):
1st Team of Partin, Dougher, Brenton, Suero and Irving (Suero POY)
2nd Team of Black, Fraser, Voelkel, McLemore and Aronhalt
3rd Team of Edwards, McGlynn, Plummer, Glass and Abreu
All Rookie Team of McGlynn, Edwards, Nwakamma, Sikma and Dickinson (Edwards ROY)...COY is Becker)
