Title: Alumni on the Pro Circuit & International
Post by: Chairman of the Board on October 13, 2011, 04:25:27 pm
SB has a few alums playing pro- maybe not exactly all playing, but at least on the roster:

MLL:
Waldeck (Hamilton)
Crowley (Hamilton)
Rand (Long Island)
Compitello (Boston)
McBride (Rochester)

NLL:
Duch (Washington)
Crowley (Philadelphia)
McBride (Colorado)

NALL:
Compitello (Jacksonville)
Rand (Jacksonville)

Here's today's news on the NALL draft:
http://laxallstars.com/north-american-lacrosse-league-inaugural-draft-results/

SB has had some other guys out there in the past- Greg Taylor '97 played for the NY Saints (NLL), Jason Cappadoro '06 played for the NJ Pride and Chicago Machine (MLL), Steve Waldeck '10 for the Minnesota Swarm (NLL), and Kyle Pearl '05 played for the SF Dragons (MLL).

Additions?  Corrections?

Tom Compitello (Nationals) and Vonzel Legall  (Rattlers) both made the opening day rosters for their MLL teams.  Things could change once the NCAA and NLL end their seasons but congrats to the both of them.  Go Brook!!!

And of course Waldeck is back with the Nationals.

I went to see Crowley and Waldeck plan this past weekend when the Nats played the Lizards.   Man I would love to see both of them to find their way back to LI.  Crowley, Seibald  and Peyser would be a nasty midfield.

Huge games for Crowley and McBride last night in the MLL.

Crowley went for 4 goals and 3 assists and McBride went 6 and 2.  Both are not top ten in scoring in the league and neither made the all-star team.  WTF?

The Nats actually missed the playoffs but ended on a high note.   Rand and McBride will both be in the MLL Playoffs next week.    Both had great seasons...Rand was 54% on face-offs and I think McBride was approaching 30 goals.

He said the talent leval on team Canada was insane.  He did get a few minutes of run though.

Waldeck is a Lizard now too...Traded with David Earl for their top pick.  Somehow the Lizards also grabbed Mark Matthews from Denver.  Add Parnell to the mix and the Lizards are going to be a real fun team to watch.

Crowley had 4g and 1a last night in the Wings opening win.

Halfway MVP: Kevin Crowley, M, Hamilton Nationals
If you are just tuning into the league this might be a big surprise for you. Then again, if you actually saw Crowley play this past weekend you probably saw him score half of his team’s goals against the Lizards. Yes, Crowley put up a five spot and even chipped in an assist last week, and he did it with fundamental functionality.

Canadians get a bad rap for being the swaggiest showdog in the kennel, but Crowley is about as blue collar a lacrosse player as you will find. He approaches the cage off ball, and sometimes with the ball, linearly – there’s no dancing. He may flail his stick from time to time, but he’s not getting footloose on anybody. He wants you to chase the stick and try to body him up. Go ahead. Swing at the stick. Didn’t work. Goal. Body him up. Well that didn’t work he’s basically a robot in a purple and orange suit. Crowley carried the Nationals before the Knighthawks players arrived by functioning as an offensive fulcrum. He didn’t initiate the offense; he commanded it. Kevin Crowley is without a doubt the halfway MVP.

Knighthawks???  Thats NLL, not MLL.  Though Crowley does play in both...

Crowley playes for the Hamilton Nationals in the MLL and the Philly Wings in the NLL...pretty much a star in both leagues

I think when he mentions the Knighthawks, those are the players that were in the NLL final thus missingthe first few Nationals games.  That is when Crowley carried the team.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Kevin Crowley had a feeling that the long halftime break in Saturday night's Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game wouldn't work in his team's favor.

It turned out that Crowley was right ... and the Hamilton Nationals midfielder played a big part in righting the ship for Team Supernova in its 24-15 victory over Team Eclipse at American Legion Memorial Stadium.

Crowley, named the All-Star Game's most valuable player, scored two of his three goals early in the fourth quarter, igniting a final-period run that saw Team Supernova turn what had been a two-goal lead into a runaway.

It's about time Crowley get's the respect that he deserves. He is the best middie in the pro game. Classic 2 way player who should have won the Tewaritan instead of Ned Crotty. Glad to see him shine without the shadow of Paul Rabil. And speaking of here are some interesting college stats.

Crowley 60 gms  131g 101a  232pts

Rabil     62gms     92g  67a   159pts

That is a 75 pt difference. Not even close. The Lacrosse world needs to start moving forward with who it promotes, they seem to get stuck in the past and also hung up on were you played. It's Crowley time !!!

 Also look at Tundo's career number's  59 gms  96g  82a 178pts

It's about time Tundo got some run in that pro league. He is young, fast, and can put the rock in the net. I have watched these gms and they are running some old slobs out there. If they want a better product then they need to let go of the past.

Brady doesn't dress but could be Adams backup next season.  It seems like he signed mid season.  Tundo actually had an assist in their last game and got a lot of run at the midfield.   He was playing becasue of a bunch of injuries but hopefully he showed enough in the last few games to make the roster again next season.  Waldeck has be active all year.

If only the Lizards could get Crowley.

Press release on the MVP King:

Boston (August 22, 2013)- After a season filled with outstanding performances by so many MLL athletes, the league is excited to announce Kevin Crowley as the winner of the 2013 Warrior Most Valuable Player award. While many players were deserving of the award, Hamilton’s offensive leader has been voted as this years’ recipient, by MLL coaches and general managers, in what was one of the most exciting offensive summers in recent memory.

“There are so many MLL players worthy of the MVP Award, I didn’t think I was going to get it,” said Crowley. “This also says a lot about my teammates. Having defenses shut teams down allowing us on the offense to score goals is very important and I owe all of them a big thanks.”

While Crowley was busy tearing up MLL defenses, Matt Danowski, who finished second in MVP voting, quietly helped lead the Charlotte Hounds to their first playoff appearance in club history. Third in the votes was Outlaws’ goaltender Jesse Schwartzman, who recently was named Warrior Goalie of the Year for his outstanding efforts in Denver. Schwartzman became the first goaltender in the history of the league to stand between the pipes for an undefeated season.

A third year veteran out of Stony Brook University, Crowley took the MLL by storm this season producing the best scoring numbers of his young career. The British Columbia native was the Nationals’ most potent offensive weapon, scoring 55 total points (38g, 2 2PTG, 14 assists). Crowley’s supporting cast of Joe Walters and Kevin Cunningham provided scoring opportunities for the first time MVP, who found the back of the net on 33% of his shots.

2013 served as the launching point for the young midfielder’s professional career, as Crowley was able to shatter his entire career bests in points, shooting percentage and shots on goal. Despite being an effective member of Hamilton’s offense last year (37 points), Crowley emerged as one of his team’s leaders helping the Nationals to their best record in club history 9-5.

Crowley has been a key piece to the club’s recent successes. His most recent individual achievements include winning the 2013 MLL All-Star Game’s MVP award, as well as earning the 2013 Offensive Player of the Year award presented by Brine.

Major League Lacrosse continues to grow, and with it comes growth in the talent pool of potential candidates for this prestigious award. Crowley has shown MLL fans, as well as front office and personnel members who voted for this award, that he has joined the upper-echelon of the league’s midfielders. Crowley and his team are looking to capture their second MLL championship this coming weekend, as they take on the Bayhawks in semifinal number two at 4 p.m, Saturday on CBS Sports Network.

The King just scored his 100th NLL goal...

Toronto rallied in the final stanza to claim the final playoff spot in the NLL East Division. The Rock held Philadelphia to a single score and recorded two goals of their own. Wings Forward Kevin Crowley hit his milestone 100th career goal (fourth of the evening) late in the quarter. Philadelphia was not able to amount a comeback.

Forwards Kevin Crowley and Jordan Hall paced the Wings on offense. Combined, they amassed 11 of the team’s 24 points. Both recorded personal milestones on the evening. Crowley earned the second star of the night for top performers.

Canada Stuns USA to Claim FIL World Lacrosse Championship
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – Five goals from Kevin Crowley and a ball-control game plan that kept the dangerous United States team with the ball out of its stick for extended periods of the game led Canada to its third Federation of International Lacrosse world championship gold medal.

Jordan McBride, who led Scotland to its best finish ever, sixth, with a team-high 38 points, was one of 10 players named to the President's team. The team, consisting of the top 10 players in the tournament not competing in the Blue Division, was named prior to the start of the championship game between Canada and the United States. McBride was one of four Scotland players named to the team, including his brother, Jimmy.

Commerce City, Colo. - Kevin Crowley '11 scored five goals to lead Team Canada to an 8-5 win over the United States in the gold medal game of the FIL World Championships Saturday.

Crowley, who scored three goals in the first six games, tallied Canada's first four goals. His marker with 9:05 left in the third quarter was the game winner.

It was the third title for Canada, which last won in 2006.

Jordan McBride '11 dominated competition en route to being named to the President's Team, consisting of the top 10 players not competing in the Blue Division (Canada, USA, Australia, Japan, England and Iroquois Nation). McBride totaled 28 goals and 10 assists in eight games to lead Scotland to a sixth-place finish.

Poland, coached by Stony Brook alums Sean Chamberlain '07 and Tom Compitello '11, finished 20th. Michael Poch was one of the top players for Poland, tallying nine goals and eight assists. As the team's primary face-off specialist, Poch was 64 of 83 (.771) and had 33 ground balls. Larry Cerasi '07 added 11 goals and three assists.

Rising sophomore Hayden Johnstone helped Team Finland to a top-15 finish. In eight games, Johnstone posted a 2-2 record with a .628 save percentage and a 5.93 goals against average.

The FIL World Championships will return to Manchester, England, the site of the 2010 Championships, in 2018.

Future Head Coach of the SeaWolves

From Lax Power:

Compitello Joins Bryant's Lacrosse Staff for 2014-2015 Season
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Head coach Mike Pressler is pleased to announce the addition of Tom Compitello to the Bryant University men's lacrosse coaching staff for the 2014-15 season.

Compitello joins the Bulldogs as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator and will also be responsible for the program's extra-man unit and goalies.

"Speaking for our entire program, we are absolutely thrilled with the hire of Tom Compitello as our assistant men's lacrosse coach," said Pressler. "He is a tireless recruiter who brings three different Division I experiences to the table, first at Stony Brook as a great player and then coaching on the sidelines at Lehigh and Sacred Heart."

Compitello arrives in Smithfield after having spent last season as the first assistant at Northeast Conference rival Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn. There, he acted as extra-man and offensive coordinator and was responsible for all offensive personnel and game planning decisions. He designed the offense's off-season training program and was responsible for film exchange and breakdown, while also acting as the recruiting coordinator for the Pioneers.

Under Compitello's guidance, Sacred Heart finished third in the league in goals per game in 2014 (10.13) and tied the Bulldogs for the most assists per game at 6.20 each time out. The Pioneers were second only to Bryant in points per game (16.33) last season while clinching the three-seed in the 2014 NEC Tournament and finishing the year with a 4-2 record in league play (6-9 overall).

The Pioneers saw four named All-NEC selections in 2014, including First Team nods for attack Cody Marquis and midfielder Alex Miller under the tutelage of Compitello.

"It is so important for us to continue the momentum from the 2014 season," said Pressler, "and I believe the hire of Coach Comp will keep the Bryant Bulldogs heading in the right direction."

"I am really excited about the opportunity to join the Bryant coaching staff and become a part of this program," said Compitello. "The Bulldogs came off a great season last year, so I am ready to step in and continue that success."

Prior to arriving at Sacred Heart, Compitello spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant at Patriot League powerhouse Lehigh University, where he acted as assistant offensive coordinator for the two-time league champs. He also assisted with the man-up unit and film breakdown while being involved in all game planning. The Mountain Hawks led the nation in extra-man opportunities in 2012, converting at a 54.2 percent clip, and the 2013 edition would run through the Patriot League to reach its second-straight NCAA tournament.

Compitello has also spent years in the club and youth coaching ranks, currently working with Dynamic Lacrosse Training since 2010.

Compitello entered the coaching realm after a successful playing career at Stony Brook University from 2007-2011. Team captain as a senior, he helped lead the Seawolves to an America East Championship in 2010, winning USILA All-America honors as a junior. A 2010 and 2011 first team all-conference pick, Compitello also excelled in the classroom, earning his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training in June 2011 and being named an Academic All-American in the same year.

Compitello totaled 146 career points with the Seawolves, tallying 68 points and 78 assists in four seasons with 78 career ground balls. He was drafted 28th overall (fifth round) by the Boston Cannons in the 2011 Major League Lacrosse draft.

IL Indoor Top 50

Crowley: http://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/ilindoor-top-50-kevin-crowley-no-29/30076

Quote
Kevin Crowley isn’t exactly a lacrosse secret. His job is to create offense and score goals and he does both well, even though you know that’s why he’s on the floor. There’s just nothing you can do to really stop him, and that’s why he’s a steady presence on ILIndoor’s list of the Top 50 players. He proved his value with the NLL’s Philadelphia Wings last winter and it was his summer performance in Denver, helping Team Canada win a gold medal that vaulted him even higher as an elite player in the game today.

Players in any sport have just 1 request from referees and officials: Be consistent. It's the same thing when coaches look at players: Just be consistent. And that's exactly what Rhys Duch does, whether he's playing in the National Lacrosse League or the Western Lacrosse Association. The right-hander out of Victoria has been a National Lacrosse League scoring machine since being drafted No. 3 overall in 2008, and it's pretty much the same story with the WLA's Victoria Shamrocks, and his dependable production is a big reason he's cracking the Top 10 with a comfortable seat in the No. 8 slot of our Top 50 for 2014.

SB has a few alums playing pro- maybe not exactly all playing, but at least on the roster:

MLL:
Waldeck (Hamilton)
Crowley (Hamilton)
Rand (Long Island)
Compitello (Boston)
McBride (Rochester)

NLL:
Duch (Washington)
Crowley (Philadelphia)
McBride (Colorado)

NALL:
Compitello (Jacksonville)
Rand (Jacksonville)

Here's today's news on the NALL draft:
http://laxallstars.com/north-american-lacrosse-league-inaugural-draft-results/

SB has had some other guys out there in the past- Greg Taylor '97 played for the NY Saints (NLL), Jason Cappadoro '06 played for the NJ Pride and Chicago Machine (MLL), Steve Waldeck '10 for the Minnesota Swarm (NLL), and Kyle Pearl '05 played for the SF Dragons (MLL).

Additions?  Corrections?

It might be worth noting that Rhys Duch was also drafted into the MLL (11th overall by Hamilton) even though I don't think he ever played.

there's a supplemental draft and then there are open tryouts- both of which seem to be a little word-of-mouth type of recruiting.  more so on the open tryout side.

also remember how geography plays into the MLL.  and since there is no LSM, guys like waldeck move down to close.

NLL 2016 mock draft: http://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/with-the-2015-draft-done-a-look-ahead-to-2016/33183

Quote
Challen Rogers, RT, Coquitlam Adanacs (BCJALL) and Stony Brook
Defence will be a strong suit for this draft, which isn't as deep as the 2015 edition but is comparable in strength out the back door. Rogers may well be the first of those defenders to go. He's the reigning BCJALL defender of the year. He's got good size, good instincts and good stick skills. Rogers plays a physical game without taking a ton of penalties and he can pitch in on the offensive end.

Brodie Eastwood, LF, Nanaimo Timbermen (WLA) and Stony Brook
Eastwood's got two years of senior experience and had a taste of Mann Cup play in his final junior season with Victoria (2013). He was a two-time all-star in the BCJALL and was highly touted back then but hasn't yet had the kind of success in senior that would maintain the excitement.

easty's inside game is perfect for the NLL (that's his background) and rogers can "pitch in on the offensive end", where he just made all-America in Division I field lacrosse.

IL top 50 NLL players: http://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/ilindoor-top-50-kevin-crowley-no-42/33277

Quote
Since being the No. 1 overall National Lacrosse League draft pick in 2011, much has been expected of Kevin Crowley. And if for some reason you want to argue that the 6-foot-4, 220-pound right-hander out of New Westminster hasn't lived up to the hype, expect some opposition. A lot of it, actually.

Kevin Crowley's young NLL career is defined by consistency. (Photo: Larry Palumbo)

He’s scored 30 or more goals in each of his first 3 seasons and even though he scored just 25 last year, he did play 2 fewer games this season in addition to making a transition from New England to Toronto after he was traded. So it appears that no matter where and for whom Crowley is balling, he gets his job done as a finisher.

Crowley came to the Rock to provide a scoring punch after some injuries in Toronto, and he did not disappoint. He had 5 goals and 12 points to help the Rock reach the Champion’s Cup finals, where the Rock lost. Over the summer, he kept himself busy with a handful of Major League Lacrosse games with Chesapeake before finding out he was heading back to New England via trade for the 2016 NLL season.

If Crowley is anything, he’s consistent, as in consistently good and consistently productive. He hasn’t exactly broken scoreboards with his totals but in averaging nearly 4.5 points per game in his 4 NLL seasons, it’s apparent that Crowley is not only among the elite, but he’s among the clutch.

Bob Chavez
Early in his career, the knock on Crowley was he needed to shoot more. And when you see the numbers he’s put up already in his young career, you can see why NLL coaches want more shots from his stick. He knows how to position his big frame and soft hands give him the ability to shoot from a variety of scenarios, making him one of the game’s most dangerous finishers today.

Marty O'Neill
I'll admit I'm not the No. 1 Crowley fan out there. I just haven't watched him play that much since Junior A, but the main reason is I see a guy who has only scratched the surface of his talent. Crowley has a serious outside shot that is his calling card to date but he was thrust into the spotlight in Philadelphia too early. Subsequently his ability to develop a well rounded game stalled as goals were needed from his stick to bring hope to a franchise. It will be interesting in 2016 to see what Shawn Evans and Crowley can do together in NE. More interesting will be what we see them do for each other.

Stephen Stamp
His numbers appear deflated in 2015 because the way the schedule for the Black Wolves and Rock worked out, he played only 14 games last year with his mid-season trade from New England to Toronto. But Crowley actually posted the highest points-per-game average of his remarkably consistent career. Since being selected by Philadelphia with the first overall pick in the draft, Crowley has put up seasons of 36, 34, 33 and 25 goals, and 71, 72, 75 and 64 points. Had he played a full 18 games last year, he was on pace to score 32 goals and 82 points. Crowley may suffer some criticism because he plays a quiet game and always looks like he has the talent to produce even more than he does. There aren't many teams, though, who wouldn't be happy to have a regular 30+ goal and 70+ point scorer who can play pretty much any style of game you want him to.

NEW ENGLAND BLACK WOLVES

The Black Wolves have a dynamic new dimension with the arrival of league scoring champion and MVP Shawn Evans and the reacquisition of high-scoring Kevin Crowley.

Forwards: Evans, coming over from Calgary, and Crowley, returning from Toronto, are joined by returnees Kevin Buchanan, Kyle Buchanan, Pat Saunders, Brett Bucktooth, Quinn Powless (who missed most of last season after being injured), rookie Mike MacDonald (selected 22nd overall out of Princeton) and trade acquisition Shane MacDonald. Garrett Billings went to Vancouver in the three-team Evans transaction. Mark Cockerton and Jamie Lincoln were released.

VANCOUVER STEALTH

Forwards: Rhys Duch, Joel McCready, Logan Schuss, Corey Small and Cliff Smith all return. Newcomers are former league MVP finalist Garrett Billings and Jordan Durston, the only 2015 draft pick to make the team.

from the semis, Canada defeated the Iroquois 14-11: http://laxpower.com//laxnews/news.php?story=49698

Quote
Goalie Kyle Hebert, a native of Burlington, Ont., was the undeniable star of the game, making a number of great saves to help limit the damage from the high powered Iroquois offence. He faced a total of 27 shots and made 16 saves, the highest single-game save total by a goalie in the tournament thus far.

"I think Kyle played really well in there for us," said head coach Taylor Wray (Edmonton, Alta.). "He came in during the second half against the U.S. and became our No. 1."

Moments later, with a clear shooting lane Staats launched a rocket shot top-corner but was denied by a head but save from Hebert, keeping things locked at 1-1.

Some patient clearing plays and great ball movement between the midfielders, which included a snipe from Ryland Rees (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) with the long pole, helped kill off the clock.

U-19 Best Goalie, All-Tournament Team

What a tournament for Hebert, who saw time in every game for Canada. Against the U.S., the lefty didn’t flinch between the pipes, holding his ground and absorbing what his defense gave him while making a game-high 11 saves. The St. Michael’s (Ont.) netminder is committed to Stony Brook, and, tellingly, both he and future Seawolves teammate Ryland Rees earned All-Tournament honors. That’s a good baseline for future defensive teammates to build upon.

Most teams don't view him as a dodging threat, and rightfully so. Only four of Crowley's 22 shots off the dodge found the back of the cage this summer. However, 12 of the 22 shots he set up for teammates did. Crowley can put smaller short-sticks on his back and bait adjacent slides. He can run his defender into picks — and if the picker's defender does as little as Myles Jones does here, then Crowley can feed into numbers advantages.

Expect Dominique Alexander to press out on Crowley and prevent these types of two-man games from developing. Most teams short-stick Crowley, but few bring the indoor-esque physicality that Alexander does. Coaches around the league expect this matchup to tilt toward Ohio, but if Crowley catches an offensive midfielder on the field, it could be a different story.

there's a short video too.

I played lacrosse and street hockey with his uncles.  We had 5 high school All-Americans and 3 college All-Americans all living within 5 houses of each other on our block in Stony Brook.

What's weird, Camposa's grandfather caught for the Cincinnati Reds minor league team and got invited to spring training.

duch closing in on 800 points! http://www.uslaxmagazine.com/pro/nll/duch-nearing-800-points-as-stealth-eye-playoffs

Quote
Duch, 30, has been one of the most prolific scorers in indoor pro lacrosse since being drafted third overall in 2008 by the Stealth when they were based in San Jose, California.

The 30-year-old Stony Brook grad and 2009 NLL Rookie of the Year is always a threat shooting from his right side. This is his ninth NLL season and he’s never scored fewer than 33 goals in a season. He tallied a career-high 48 last year. He upped this season’s total to 29 with two in Toronto and he has 62 points.

His career regular-season numbers: 143 games played, 340 goals, 456 assists for 796 points. He will be the 15th player in NLL history to reach 800.

“I don’t intend on stopping there,” he said. “With an 18-game season, I should be getting 100 points a season. I’ve been battling injuries for a few weeks so [the points] have fallen off a little bit but I’m starting to feel healthy again.”

New England’s Kevin Crowley (2011) and Toronto’s Challen Rogers (2016) have followed Duch to the NLL out of Long Island’s Stony Brook.

Kevin Crowley scored game-high four goals to lead Charlotte to its first win of the season, a 14-10 victory over Rochester, in his first game back from NLL duties.

One of the biggest impacts came from Charlotte’s Kevin Crowley. The veteran midfielder began his seventh season in MLL, and second with the Hounds, with a two-game weekend. On Thursday, he scored a game-high four goals to lead Charlotte to its first win of the season, a 14-10 victory over Rochester.

“Always a little different transition coming back to the field game from box, but I thought we had a nice team win and took care of the ball today,” Crowley said on Lax Sports Network after the game. “The Hounds hadn’t won in three games, and neither had I with the indoor season, so this W feels extra special.”

Charlotte couldn’t keep the winning momentum going, falling to Chesapeake 17-16, but Crowley contributed two goals and three assists against his former team.

Meanwhile, Navy and head coach Rick Sowell will promote Rob Camposa to a full-time assistant coach with the team. Camposa spent last season as a volunteer assistant after stops with Molly College and at Rutgers for two seasons.

A former Stony Brook netminder, Camposa helped freshman goaltender Ryan Kern in starting all 14 games and backstopping an upset of Army West Point late in the season.

Might Camposa take over a part of the offense with Phipps gone? Associate Head Coach Ryan Wellner is their defensive-minded coach, while Sowell played midfield at Washington College in the 80s. Maybe he works with the offense a little bit, along with the face-off unit? Not sure, but it’s a great step for Camposa coaching wise.

waldeck on making the playoffs: http://www.dispatch.com/sports/20170805/professional-lacrosse--ohio-machine-faceless-defenders-take-pride-in-unselfish-play

Quote
“We want to control the flow of the game, push the action and force teams out of their comfort zone,” said Waldeck, a product of Stony Brook. “For us, forcing turnovers is a matter of pride, just like scoring a goal or handing out an assist is to an offensive player. It’s the same in a lot of sports, but the guy who eventually puts the ball in the net gets the glory and is recognized by everyone — not the guy who got the ball off the ground and put the team into position to score. That’s OK. A defender has a mindset of just going out and doing his job.”

“Our offense is full of big names in the sport,” third-year defender Steve Waldeck said. “That unit has league MVPs, perennial all-stars, scoring champions, college All-Americans and national champions. ... guys who played at big-time programs. The defensive guys, we’re more off the beaten path. We don’t get our names in the paper, but that’s OK with us. We sort of relish that role.”

Karalunas has 54 ground balls and Waldeck 39 — career highs for both.

Waldeck and Machine Win Championship For Brady Wein in a Weekend to Remember

video and interview

Quote
Late that night, amid the chaos of the postgame celebration, he broke down again. Steven Waldeck took off his No. 12 jersey and handed it to him. Brady was in between the two of them, reaching up at his dad and at one of his heroes, with the Steinfeld Trophy near his grasp.

Every player on the field, in some way, was playing for Brady. Waldeck was wearing Brady’s No. 12. A coach for the Brady’s Bunch program, Waldeck changed his number to Brady’s and has been playing for him.

“Brady’s my little brother. I love him. Papi’s like a brother to me, maybe a crazy uncle. I flew out early to coach Brady’s Bunch on Friday. TO be I changed my number from 24, my number I had as a kid. It as a hard thing to do, but Brady’s Bunch means more to more people, and cancer affects a lot of people, and it shows resiliency. Through our play, hopefully we can inject a little energy into these people who are struggling.”

Wein said when he watches MLL and sees the No. 12 jersey, it’s “priceless.” Waldeck’s No. 12 jersey won a championship, a championship for Brady.

The opening face-off showed an aggressive, fearless team willing to take chances. Steven Waldeck pressed out on Currier, forcing a turnover and pushing it down the other way.

“It means the world to us. Each year I’ve been, we’ve taken one step closer…When you go through battles, you build a chemistry, you build a connection," said Waldeck. "You genuinely love the people you play with. To come out here, to fight through a deficit. It means the world to us. It’s the most special thing that could have happened on this day.”

Hutchinson, though, is happy to now have a Jamaican national team coach in Wilson, who has coached at Brown, Lehigh and Rutgers. The hope is that Wilson will continue the progress made with new coaches in Kingston and beyond.

But his focus, of course, will be on building Jamaica’s first World Cup team. Wilson, the former goalie at Stony Brook whose mother emigrated from Jamaica’s St. Mary’s Parish to the United States in 1983, said he initially reached out to Jamaica Lacrosse intending to play, but he’s happy to land as a coach.

“This was an opportunity to represent my mom and our culture and to represent people who look like me,” Wilson said. “It’s really cool. … It’s great to be there, but it’s important to put a stamp down and my name on it the right way.”

Wilson will oversee national team tryouts first at Lehigh — for the “diaspora” players that come from outside of Jamaica — then in Kingston in January. It’s the next step in the progression of lacrosse in a country that was introduced to it just a short time ago.

But Kevin Crowley scored his series-leading 9th goal and Mitch Jones tallied after slithering through the Lakers D to bury a perfect twister to make it close again. * Several players are standing out but Crowley continues to shine as the star of the series so far. He scored 4 goals and 4 assists Monday to give him a 9/9/18 line. Crowley has scored New Westminster's first goal in each game.

Assistant Coach Roundup: Compitello Back at Lehigh

Former Yale volunteer assistant Tom Compitello will return to Lehigh as an assistant coach, following Errol Wilson's departure. Compitello started his college coaching career as the Mountain Hawks' volunteer in 2012 and 2013, helping them to back-to-back Patriot League titles and NCAA Tournament berths. He spent the following year as Sacred Heart's offensive coordinator before spending the next three years as an assistant coach at Bryant.

A former All-American at Stony Brook, he was a valuable asset during the Yale's 2018 NCAA Tournament season, working mostly with the Bulldogs' face-off men and goalies. He'll rejoin a Lehigh program that made it to the Patriot League championship in May and will return the overwhelming majority of their top players next spring.

His commitment to both teach and grow the game nationally and internationally is well known,” said Hounds head coach Jim Stagnitta. “It has truly been an honor to work with Kevin. He has my utmost respect as well as that of his teammates and competitors.”

5 Ryland Rees, RD, Coquitlam Adanacs Jr A & Stony Brook
Rees is a tremendous athlete who had a breakout year in 2018. He may have caught some people by surprise when he made Canada's roster for the FIL World Championships in Netanya, Israel but it was no fluke that he was named to the all-tournament roster. Rees was sensational playing for Canada and that only shone more attention on his work indoors, where he was shipped from the Port Coquitlam Saints to the Adanacs for the playoff run. He made a substantial impression en route to Coquitlam's Minto Cup championship, including a pretty impressive streak from the bench to the celebratory pile while wearing the boot protecting a broken foot that kept him out of the final few games of the series. Teams will bear in mind his injury history but with his athleticism he is a virtual lock to go in the first round.

Charlotte Hounds
Last season the hounds shot out of the gate like their namesake, winning their first four games of the season at a canter. The rest of the season was less swiftly undertaken and the Hounds finished outside of the playoffs at 7-7. The coming summer may hold an even more ominous portent. The Hounds lost more than just their stars—they lost their coach, Jim Stagnitta, just before the supplemental draft. It’s going to be up to former league MVP Kevin Crowley to rally the remaining members of the kennel to go out and hunt for meaningful wins.

CHARLOTTE HOUNDS INK KEVIN CROWLEY TO THREE-YEAR DEAL

CHARLOTTE - Kevin Crowley is coming back.

Crowley, a former Major League Lacrosse and All-Star Game MVP, and the only player in the history of lacrosse to be drafted first overall in both professional leagues, is returning to the team that acquired him via a trade with the Chesapeake Bayhawks in 2015. The Hounds have signed the Canadian national team star to a three-year contract beginning in the 2019 season.

In 2017, the midfielder enjoyed his best offensive season since he was named the league’s MVP in 2013. Crowley netted 25 goals and tacked on nine assists, second-most on the team earning him his second MLL All-Star Game honor.

“Kevin is one of the best lacrosse players in the world and his commitment to return will benefit the Hounds and the greater lacrosse community in Charlotte,” president Jim McPhilliamy said.  ”This is a great moment for our fans and our team.  Plus, I just really like the guy - so wins all around.”

“Kevin  is one of the best professional lacrosse players in world,” general manager Mike Cerino said. “He has been a tremendous leader of the Charlotte Hounds over the last three years as we competed until the last day of each season for MLL playoff breaths.  Having Kevin in place on a three-year deal is a great for our team to build upon and our loyal fans to enjoy!”

Duch said he’s now starting to find his groove after struggling with his confidence level in his most recent foot injury.

“I’ve been playing with zero confidence in my foot for a long time. It’s tough to mentally wrap your head around an injury that lasts that long,” said Duch

“Most importantly, it’s about getting confidence in my foot, and I’m getting it and the team’s helping me find success with the plays and the procedures that we’re going with.”

Ryland Rees, Stony Brook
What happens when the best player on your team is an LSM? I don’t know you should probably ask Stony Brook, because they’re living through that very scenario right now with Ryland Rees. With international experience for Team Canada, Rees may be the best-equipped player in this draft in terms of dealing with the current crop of professional players in the PLL. Rees has the size, the power and the ballhandling ability to make an impact on a PLL team that could use a little less brawn and a little more brain from their stable of poles.

WELCOME TO THE 'ZARDS
KEVIN CROWLEY AMONG NINE PLAYERS TAKEN

Garden City, New York (April 24th, 2019) In the history of professional lacrosse in North America, only one player was drafted first overall in both Major League Lacrosse and the National Lacrosse League and he has previous ties to Long Island. Now that player is a member of the New York Lizards, as former Stony Brook star and Charlotte Hounds midfielder Kevin Crowley was one of nine players taken by the Lizards in Wednesday’s MLL Relocation Draft.

Crowley, who recently completed his indoor season with the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League, is pumped up about his return to New York even though the Lizards home venue Shuart Stadium was once “enemy territory” for him on Long Island.

“I’m very excited,” said Crowley.  “Playing my college ball there, it’s going to be cool to get to play on Long Island again.  I couldn’t be happier to be a New York Lizard.”

Crowley has a previous and long standing relationship with Spallina who is the women’s lacrosse coach at Stony Brook and the opportunity to play for a legendary head coach like O’Hara was too good to pass up.

“Joe and I have a great relationship and obviously having that Stony Brook connection adds to it even more,” said Crowley.  “And of course BJ is one of the most successful coaches and I’m very excited to play for him.”

In eight previous MLL seasons with Hamilton, Florida, Chesapeake, and Charlotte, Crowley has racked up 135 goals, 69 assists, and 207 points over 78 games. Crowley will make his Lizards debut in the 2019 season opener on Friday, May 31st against the defending MLL champion Denver Outlaws at Shuart Stadium on the campus of Hofstra University.

“Getting Kevin to New York is so tremendous,” said Lizards General Manager Joe Spallina.  “This is the type of power move that helps further cement ourselves at the top of the league.  Besides Kevin’s incredible lacrosse ability, he is also world class off the field, a true leader, and someone that will form a true connection with our incredible fans.”

Crowley has been a scoring machine indoors as well.

He’s totaled 292 goals, 323 assists and 615 points over 133 games in his eight year NLL career with the Wings, New England Black Wolves, and Toronto Rock.  Drafted first overall in MLL in 2011 and first overall in the NLL in 2012, the Westminster, British Columbia native brings a powerful scoring touch to the Lizards and joins Mark Matthews for quite the 1-2 offensive punch.

“I think we’re going to compete for a championship,” said Crowley.  “Mark knows this but I’m a huge Mark Matthews fan.  He gets it done on the field and in the box and he’s one of the best players in the world.”

The 30 year old Crowley brings his potent left-handed shot back to Long Island where he was an outstanding midfielder for Stony Brook.  Crowley ranks second on the SeaWolves all-time scoring list with 232 points and is one of just two players in school history with at least 100 goals and 100 assists.

Crowley was a two time First-Team All-American, the Tewaaraton Trophy runner up in 2010 and was a first-team selection in the America East Conference during all four of his seasons at Stony Brook.  Crowley was named the 2010 USILA Player of the Year and the 2011 USILA Midfielder of the Year.   He was inducted into the Stony Brook Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016.

“Everyone associated with our organization is absolutely thrilled to have Kevin in a Lizards uniform this season,” said O’Hara.  “His tremendous talent, experience, and leadership will go a long way toward helping us bring the MLL Championship back to New York.  It will be a special treat for all of our fans to have Kevin back here where he starred as a college player.”

also, ben randall played 2 years at SB before transferring, and also alex corpolongo was drafted (possibly spallina's doing?):

The Lizards also added All-star goalie Austin Kaut as well as defenseman Ben Randell, attackmen Ryan Walsh and Scott Bieda, midfielders Michael Begley and Alex Corpologo, and face-off specialists Greg Puskuldjian and Noah Rak.

However, Rees and Joe Spallina– the current New York Lizards General Manager and No.14-ranked Stony Brook Women’s Lacrosse head coach– assisted Pugal with scoring a tryout under Cannons head coach Sean Quirk. Pugal entered the tryout with the same mindset that he used on the Seawolves to prove his doubters wrong.

The Knighthawks loaded up on forwards in the expansion draft and subsequent trades, setting them up already with a possibly above-average NLL offence. While they added some solid defenders in the draft and free agency, it's on that side of the ball where could really use a boost. They would get one from Rees. I've heard him compared to Graeme Hossack as a prospect. I'm not sure I'm prepared to go that far, but Rees has shown elite talent both in the box game and as an All-World selection at the 2018 world field lacrosse championships in Israel. While field lacrosse performance doesn't accurately predict box success, being selected as one of the very best in the world the summer after you finished your junior box career is a good sign that you have some serious athleticism.

Rees is a special athlete with a chance to be a player around whom you can build the core of your franchise. Just look at the difference Graeme Hossack makes and how teams have to prepare when they play against him. I don’t see Rees as being at the level of Hossack as a shutdown defender, but few players are, given that Hossack is the best defender to come into the NLL since Kyle Rubisch. Rees is, however, a very good defender with size, strength, speed and the stick skills to contribute in transition.

Boston has two players up for the award, Justin Pugal and Ryland Rees. A defensive award but Rees has been a two-way player as an LSM, he has picked up 3 goals and 1 assist for 4 points in 13 games played.

Rees is a rookie out of Stony Brook being selected 27th overall in the 2019 MLL Draft. On the defensive side of things he has picked up 51 ground balls, has caused 12 turnovers. His groundballs rank 10th in MLL, 2nd amongst LSM’s. His turnovers also rank 10th right behind his teammate Pugal who is also up for the award.

As for Pugal he has appeared in 12 games picking up 25 ground balls and forcing 14 turnovers. His 14 turnovers is a tie for 5th in MLL. Coincidentally has also went to Stony Brook like Rees and is also in his first MLL season.

No change from my Round 1 Mock here, either (that will be a theme for a good chunk of the first round). Rees is the clear choice for a Rochester team that built a pretty solid NLL offense through the expansion draft, trades and free agency. They got some good defenders, too, but have nowhere near the depth in that end of the floor that they do up front. Rees will be a big addition to address that balance.

The troika of Kyle Jackson, Zed Williams and Challen Rogers merged their diverse skills into a cohesive unit that has the Cannons competing for the MLL crown for the first time since 2015.

Rogers is a 6-foot-4, 220-pound, four time All-American from Stony Brook who combines stealth with physicality in traffic and possesses a hard shot from the perimeter. Rogers is the only one of the three to play offense and defense although Jackson has on occasion.

On Eve of Long Island Visit, Alum Kevin Crowley Named to College Cross All-Decade First Team
Stony Brook Hall of Famer Kevin Crowley visits Nassau Coliseum with the Philadelphia Wings on Jan. 4.

https://stonybrookathletics.com/news/2019/12/24/mens-lacrosse-on-eve-of-long-island-visit-alum-kevin-crowley-named-to-college-cross-all-decade-first-team.aspx

Quote
Crowley was named to the College Cross All-Decade First Team on Tuesday.

First-year Stony Brook assistant coach Mike Chanenchuk, a Maryland product and fellow midfielder, was named to the all-decade third team.

"I've met so many great people on Long Island, especially through Stony Brook, and most recently with the New York Lizards," Crowley said. "Getting to come back and see a lot of my college roommates and college teammates and all the people you meet in the community, it's special this time because it's indoor lacrosse — it's box lacrosse. I've played a couple of field lacrosse games [with the Lizards], I've played at Stony Brook since I graduated. But I've never played a box lacrosse game on Long Island. So I'm really looking forward to it.

"It's such a hotbed for lacrosse — even with the history of the New York Saints in the past, and then I remember in college we went to New York and watched the New York Titans play too. So I'm happy that lacrosse is back on Long Island. There are so many big-time lacrosse fans there and it's such a great lacrosse community. It's great that they have box lacrosse now."

"It's definitely not something you're thinking about when you're going to school for four years," Crowley said. "Going to Stony Brook was a culture shock for me having grown up in Vancouver and moving to Long Island. It was four great years. And, like I said, I met a lot of great people. To get inducted into the Hall of Fame, it wrapped up my career with a nice little bow on it."

Crowley believes the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team is in good hands with first-year head coach Anthony Gilardi as well as J.P. Brazel and Chanenchuk as deputies. Crowley and Chanenchuk played together with the MLL's Charlotte Hounds.

"It's great to see where the program is heading. I'm very excited for things to come at Stony Brook," Crowley said. "I really appreciate the communication with the alumni and getting the alumni on board with everything that is going on and keeping us updated. And, obviously, Chanenchuk is a former teammate of mine. I know what he's bringing to the table. I'm very confident in our coaching staff."

6. Ryland Rees, LSM (63GB, 15CT)
Rees exceeded all expectations for the Cannons last year by becoming one of, if not the, most complete LSM in that league. Many people are going to compare him to the great ginger emperor, and I’m here to tell you that such a comparison is not actually as crazy as it sounds. Rees is phenomenal off the ground, has a harpoon gun for a shot, and can hang with the opposing team’s top dodger. Rees has the ability to supplant some of the weaker LSMs in the league and take their starting spot.

IL Indoor's 2020 NLL Transition Player of the Year: Challen Rogers
https://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/il-indoor-s-2020-nll-transition-player-of-the-year-challen-rogers/56433

Quote
The top requirement for being an effective transition man is athleticism and Rogers has plenty of that. He’ll drop the hammer on defense, then scoot up the floor with or without the ball depending on the situation. And while some defenders in the offensive zone are better off setting picks, Rogers is no liability when it comes to finishing.

That’s the type of two-way lacrosse that makes Rogers so valuable in any situation and what makes him IL Indoor’s Transition Player of the Year.

He continued his scorching 2019 season two-way play with more of the same. Challen even filled in with some righty "O" cameos when his offense was down a man, proving he can do it all.

The midfield has some punch too with Frank Brown alongside Kyle Jackson and Challen Rogers. Zach Goodrich is now the best SSDM in the league with the departure of TJ Comizio to the PLL, and John Yozzo-Scaperotta joins him and Tim Edwards to form a formidable rope unit.

Boston’s Justin Pugal played a huge role in the championship.

Initially undrafted coming out of Stony Brook last year, Pugal later eared a tryout with the Cannons and parlayed that into a season in which he was ultimately selected to play in the MLL All-Star game.

On Sunday, he buried a two-pointer with 0.3 seconds remaining in the first half, his first professional goal, to give Boston momentum and an 8-6 lead heading into halftime.

The Cannons stretched the lead to 11-6 in the second half with Pugal doing more damage. On one possession early in the third quarter, he blocked a shot from Lee with his knee and then later stripped Grant of the ball to give the ball back to Boston.

Uppgren had the answer for Boston, scoring his fifth of the game with 6:29 to play and Challen Rogers added another with 3:42 to play.

Expect Matsuoka to head back to Stony Brook next season and get another year under his belt, but when he is NLL ready, his speed is what makes him standpoint. Matsuoka can put the ball in the net but his biggest asset is simply getting the ball downfield. Think a Ryan Dilks or Damon Edwards type.

4 Halifax (Compensatory pick—Matt Vinc)
Harrison Matsuoka, LT, Okotoks Raiders Jr A & Stony Brook
The Thunderbirds have plenty of forwards, so adding another defender—and in this case one with serious transition chops—makes sense for them. I feel like they might be interested in Dodds, too, though. While the right side is already pretty young, his grit and finishing ability might help get the most out of the other elements of Halifax's offence.

+
Speed.

-
Hasn't had much chance to compete on bigger stages than the RMLL.

Comp
Damon Edwards. Matsuoka takes after the Toronto Rock player's ability to apply his blazing speed to create transition but still have the control to shoot accurately.

2021 PLL Entry Mock Draft
https://lacrossebucket.com/2021/02/12/2021-pll-entry-mock-draft/

Quote
6. Atlas LC: Challen Rogers, Midfield

Bryan Costabile and Connor Buczek ran that Atlas midfield last season, They also have two big, downhill dodgers in Romar Dennis and Paul Rabil. Adding Challen Rogers to the mix gives them another one of those types of players, but Rogers does have a bit more versatility to him and could work wonders for this midfield unit, especially if they lose somebody in the expansion draft.

5. Chrome LC: Mark Ellis, SSDM

Crome’s SSDM situation wasn’t great last season. Haus is a solid player that can be successful on both ends and Donny Moss and Sam Duggan are both good SSDMs, however, there are certainly improvements to be made all around. Ellis isn’t necessarily an upgrade size-wise, but he can still provide some more help in that area and beef up that SSDM room. Plus, he’s likely the next best after Davis-Allen and Goodrich, who I would expect to be gone by this point.

Quote
3. Atlas LC: Ben Randall, Defense

Trading Rob Pannell sets up Atlas nicely to take Duke’s Michael Sowers with the first overall pick in the College Draft. So I would expect them to focus on the defense with this first pick in the entry draft. Atlas has a solid foundation on the back end with Jack Concannon in cage and Cade Van Raaphorst as their top pole, alongside Tucker Durkin and Austin Pifani. Adding Ben Randall to this mix should immediately the league’s second-worst defense from last season. Randall has been one of the top poles in pro lacrosse and often takes the opposing team’s top guy. With a more experienced core around him than what he had in New York the past few seasons, Randall could really thrive.

Pearson, junior midfielder with the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team, was selected in the first round (sixth overall) by the Langley Thunder on Thursday night in the 2021 Western Lacrosse Association Graduating Junior Player Draft.

some ink for rogers (and also i like to claim ellis and randall too): https://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/devitte-team-mll-vs-the-pll/57356

Quote
Transition-er: Challen Rogers
Not necessarily a do-it-all midfielder like Manis, Rogers brings a lot to the table in the moments that move the ball from defense to offense. Whether he’s already on the field or coming on to help with the clear, Rogers is the guy you want on the other end of the first pass out of danger. He’s also capable of staying on to set a few picks, float for a step-down, or dodge hard and force a slide on a slow break. Oh, and he can let loose the deuces if you’re looking for that sort of thing.

Wing Specialist: Mark Ellis
One of the problems with watching the Lizards the last few years was always wondering why Ellis didn’t get more reps. He really came into his own at the end of the 2019 season and flashed big-play ability in the bubble, as well. He really shines on the wing and in transition off of the draw, which is what most PLL teams need and what every pro team needs. Hustle is free for everyone, but not everyone does it like Ellis can.

Defense: Ben Randall
Randall has been saddled with trying to marshal a constantly shifting cast of defenders for years. Mentally, he can’t possibly be the same player he was when he came into the pro ranks. But that’s good. That’s hardened his soul. The disappointment has made him bitterly efficient and that is why he will lead the line on this imaginary team that absolutely needs a leader on defense. As happy as Randall would be to just be a No. 2 or 3 defensemen, on this team he is once again nominated to be the lead on the yoke. Luckily, an ox yoke is made for two bovine animals, so he won’t have to pull the cart alone.

Mike McCannell, Matt Anderson among Top Draft Picks in Ontario Lax League
https://stonybrookathletics.com/news/2021/3/19/mens-lacrosse-mike-mccannell-matt-anderson-among-top-draft-picks-in-ontario-lax-league.aspx

McCannell was selected in the first round (fourth overall) and Matt Anderson was selected in the second round (10th overall), both by the Oakville Rock, on Thursday night.

McCannell and Anderson will join an Oakville roster this summer that also includes Stony Brook alum Challen Rogers.

McCannell and Anderson's Stony Brook teammate, Caleb Pearson, similarly was drafted in first round (sixth overall) by the Langley Thunder in the 2021 Western Lacrosse Association Graduating Junior Player Draft in his native Alberta on Feb. 11.

Oakville Rock

4 Mike McCannell, LT, Orangeville

8 Cam Wyers, LD, Toronto Beaches

10 Matt Anderson, RF, Burlington Chiefs

16 Devlin Shanahan, G, Mimico

28 Hunter Lemieux, LF, Burlington

It wasn't a shock but was a mild surprise that McCannell went to Oakville fourth overall with Deaken still on the board. Bruce Codd is obviously a fan of both players, but the Northmen Jr A head coach and Rock assistant must have let GM Steve Dietrich know that since they were only going to get a chance to nab one of them, McCannel was the guy they felt would best fit into Oakville's lineup. The speedster scored 43 points, including 17 goals, over his final two seasons in Orangeville. McCannell also took just five minor penalties over those two seasons.

Anderson and Lemieux were key cogs in the potent offence in Burlington, which was the Jr A team affiliated with the Rock before Oakville got its own Jr A team for the 2019 season.

my guess is you have to strike when the iron is hot.  while SB is a good job in the mid-major levels, if you have a chance at a storied program with alumni support and funding like navy does, you take it.  you do that when you get the offer.  you get the offer when your team is on top.  not a or two year later.

plus, i imagine the camp money is big in annapolis.  that's a big deal in the lacrosse world where salaries are low.

The Strength of Mark Ellis
https://www.usalaxmagazine.com/college/men/the-strength-of-mark-ellis

Quote
MARK ELLIS IS TOLD THAT HE IS AT ONCE OLD SCHOOL AND CUTTING EDGE, and his first response is to laugh.

The cutting-edge part of who Ellis is comes from his commitment to bringing the latest in science and technology to his teams. The old school part in his understanding that all the technology in the world doesn’t help you much if you don’t put in the work. These are lessons he learned from his own experiences as a lacrosse player, first at Garden City (N.Y.) High School and then later at both Stony Brook, where he got his undergraduate degree, and Hofstra, where he earned his master’s, and ultimately for two summers with Major League Lacrosse.

OK, the sports bras. They’re part of the Catapult system, and they’re worn by the members of the men’s lacrosse team under their uniforms, in games and in practices. They measure anything and everything related to the fitness of the athletes who wear them. He was first introduced to the sport science at Stony Brook, and with how it resonated, he’s brought it with him to Princeton.

He thought his route to college would be as a football player, but he didn’t like the recruiting process for the sport. When the chance to get a scholarship to Stony Brook arose, he jumped at it.

“I was going to visit Maryland,” he says. “I still have the voicemail on my phone from Coach [John] Tillman. But Stony Brook was willing to pay for everything.”

“I was nervous when I first walked into this,” he says. “If you looked at the rest of my family minus me, you’d say there was no way I’d ever work at a place like Princeton...  I was worried when I came here that I would be dealing with a different kind of kid, but they’re not much different than the kids at Stony Brook and Hofstra that I played with. The academics are tougher. They ask a lot more questions, that’s for sure. If they don’t know something, they’re going to ask. I like that. I like the idea that I can teach them something they don’t know to guys who know a lot.”

He finished his Stony Brook career with 47 total points on 36 goals and 11 assists. Kaschalk played a fifth year as a graduate student with Lindenwood University where he racked up 78 points on 62 goals and 16 assists. He is no stranger to the indoor game as Kaschalk played for the Windsor Clippers and the Burlington Chiefs in the Ontario Junior League during a seven-year span from 2013-2019.

24 Matt Anderson, RF, Oakville Rock MSL & Stony Brook
Anderson produced one of the more interesting sets of season-to-season stat lines in Jr A that you'll see. He went from 1G/4A/5 points in 19 games with the Burlington Chiefs in 2018 to 30G/39A/69 points in 18 games as a 20-year-old the next summer. He chipped in 13 points, 12 of them assists, in five games with the Oakville Rock in the MSL Classic season of 2021. Anderson is a solid depth player who doesn't need the ball in his stick to contribute.

Beyond the Box: The Wild, Wonderful NLL Ride of Rhys Duch
https://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/beyond-the-box-the-wild-wonderful-nll-ride-of-rhys-duch/60483

Quote
Having just entered his 14th season in the NLL (his first year with the Colorado Mammoth), there should be no doubt that Rhys Duch will eventually be enshrined into the league's Hall of Fame. He needs 1 point to become the 12th player in NLL history to reach 1,000. He is 11 assists shy of hitting the 600 mark; Gavin Prout currently sits in 10th place all-time with 621 assists in the regular season. And he has 410 goals, which is 47 goals from tying the Vancouver Warriors Shawn Evans for the 10th-most goals all-time.

For the first nine seasons of his career, Duch was one of the NLL's most unstoppable, elite players. Playing each of those nine with the Stealth (now Warriors) organization, dating back to the San Jose days, Duch never tallied fewer than 33 goals or 79 points in any season. In fact, during back-to-back seasons in 2015 and 2016, Duch recorded more than 100 points; he is one of seven players in NLL history to have back-to-back 100+ point seasons. That's without even mentioning that in his sophomore season, Duch played a pivotal role on the NLL Championship-winning Washington Stealth in 2010.

But what was most impressive about Duch during this time was his durability, especially for a player who was constantly being hounded by aggressive defenses for years because of his offensive production. Over those nine seasons, Duch missed only four games.

No point, no goal, no moment was more consequential than Duch's overtime-winning goal in Game 2 of the Finals that won the Roughnecks their first NLL Championship since 2009.

"Players wanting to have you on their team is the ultimate compliment," Duch said. "People want to surround themselves with people who help them win and can help them in the locker room. I always want to be known as that guy, not just as somebody who likes collecting points and looking in the mirror, but somebody who is doing their job and contributing where they are expected to both on and off the floor."

Scoring 1,000 points in the NLL is rarified air. When Rhys Duch ripped home a shot for the Colorado Mammoth in Week 6, he became just the 12th player to reach that plateau. I won't go into much detail about his feat because Adam Levi did such a good job of looking at the wild, wonderful ride that his career has been as Duch was approaching the mark. It's a nice look at the challenges of coming back from multiple injuries to keep playing the game you love.

McCannell, the 5th overall pick in 2021 by San Diego, comes to Philadelphia following his rookie season with the Seals. He scored one goal and recorded nine assists in his first 17 games as an NLL player. An alumnus and former captain of Stony Brook University’s Men’s Lacrosse team, McCannell left his mark on the Stony Brook program after playing in 63 games over the course of five season and finishing his collegiate career with 135 points, 74 goals, and 61 assists and named twice to the All-America East First Team.

to amass over 1,000 points (including over 400 goals and over 600 assists) and won multiple championships.

Furthermore, Duch’s career was so successful that he is one of only three players in NLL history that achieved everything listed above, and also won the NLL Rookie of the Year Award. With all that he’s accomplished, Rhys Duch has made one of the best cases, particularly amongst offensive players, for being inducted into the NLL Hall of Fame.

When Duch came into the league in 2009, his never-quit, do-everything-for-your-teammates mentality was already ingrained deep within his psyche. And that way of playing was hammered home in his early days with the Stealth, playing alongside selfless veterans he respected such as Jeff Zywicki, Cam Sedgwick and Colin Doyle. The fact the Stealth were winning because of their team play helped reassure that this was, in fact, the way Duch and the team needed to play.
