Can we have a thread dedicated to Seawolves Basketball News, Press Releases, etc similar to the one under Football section?

Finally!  SBU broke into the mid major top 25.

I think this is long overdue - but they finally got it right.

Finally. About time! And if we can win at Albany, then I'm sure we will stay on top 25 in next week's ranking too.

Albany was ranked earlier....now they are not receiving any votes. We need to win this one.

ya.. def good read.. thanks ry1nik.

Here is my question: As Rothstein said "He’s easily one of America’s best glue guys". What happens after he graduates? While Warney has the potential to be the best PF in AE, I want to know who in our team is ready to step up to lead the team, do all the dirty works, be the glue and produce on both ends.. simply who is going to be our TB next season regardless of the position?

I'd like to think that the general talent level of all players on the team (including recruits for next season) is elevating enough so we won't have to rely so much on one "glue guy" for success.

Got my Tickets for Vermont game on Feb 15. They are all sold out and my guess is the reaming home games will all be sold out as well. That's great news for their program.. Can't wait to see the new Arena !!!!!

Sold out already? fu**!! I was going to leave work early that friday just to get to that game. I guess not... I checked Stubhub and it has two tickets selling for $57.00 each for a Reg season game... god...

I feared the day that I would get priced out of Stony brook tickets (adding the food+toll+gas from NYC) and that day is getting here faster than I thought. I'll think about it, but I may just choose to watch online

Stony Brook #47 in Top US Public Universities 2013

http://www.languagemonitor.com/top-c...per-mediabuzz/

"The rankings measure near real-time movements of an institution’s reputation or ‘brand equity’, using the same techniques used to measure the appeal of any other branded product, such as luxury automobiles, or consumer electronics."

Here are some other AE schools:
#47 Stony Brook
#52 New Hampshire
#65 Binghamton
#68 Vermont

That is why we are going to be most important member in AE and our demand will only increase with time in sports media and news.

I watched a game last Saturday on ESPN  between Utah St and New Mexico ST.  I told my wife we could beat these guys by 12 points easily.  Guess I was right they are ranked below us.  A win tonight gives us another 20 win season  as we head into the last  week of the regular  season. No reason we cant make The Dance this year. Just take it 1 game at a  time.

I have a question about the Expansion of SBU Basketball Arena.  I was just looking at some of the other Arenas in the America East Schools SB plays with and I see the a few of the Arenas are really nice and they seat over 4000 people.  ie: Agganis Areana 7200.. UMBC 5200,Hofstra 5100 etc.. There is no doubt pritchard Gym as way to small now since SBU basketball has finally made a national name but, why not do it right the first time and build a larger Arena instead of the 4000 seat Arena they are currently building now?. I do understand $$$ is always an issue, especially considering SBU is a State School and a lot of the money comes from tax dollars... I think a 7000 to 9000 seat Arena makes more sence maybe not today but down the road.

SBU Athletics as a whole appears to be running on all 8 cylinders now and their basketball team is only getting better and better every year and is also drawing a larger fan base on and off the campus.. I do see a eventual change in Conference  down the raod to a stronger Conference, like The Big East perhaps, and that alone will draw more people into the Arena to watch SB play and a 4000 seat Arena will be to small to accommodate the fans.. IE ;UCON 10,167.. Georgetown 20,000.. Syracuse 34,000 +.     I guess I'm dreaming and getting way to ahead of my self with the expansion thing but I do have a vision, one day, SB can and will be another Gonzaga, if they want it to be !!!!!

It was a question I raised to the SB Athletic Directors during a season ticket holder meeting. I too am skeptical that SB can advance its brand to where it wants to end up with a 4K basketball arena. However, the reply I got was that the powers that be had done their research, and the trend for our level and our target level is towards smaller home arenas. Of course they would also include occasional use of large scale pro arenas for "marquee games". They also mentioned several high profile teams (without names) that are planning on visiting our new home.

That said, I do think they'll end up making use of larger seating pavilions like Nassau Coliseum or Barclay's for big visitors (like, for example, Ohio State). No different than U Conn and the Pavilion, or Seton Hall and the Prudential Center.

Btw - it was also mentioned that we may get a naming bid for SB Arena. Would be phenomenal to get that kind of branding.
Title: Re: Stony Brook Seawolves Basketball News, Press Releases, etc
Post by: ecasadoSBU on February 28, 2013, 11:55:06 pm
I dont see it as a problem. Grow the brand and in the future we could get a money-raising campaign for a future 9-15k arena at home. You never know. We can even have a hockey rink on the future one. It all depends if we can continue to win and build tradition. Its obvious that we have big time donors. They just don't care that much about athletic yet, but in the future we can have a $50 million campaign and build ourselves a nice arena. we wouldn't be the first or last University to do it. For now, having a 4k athletic arena is perfect. It keeps maintenance cost down and is more likely and can realistically be sold out... I mean, does anyone think Stony Brook can sell out a 9k-15k arena within the next five years. I doubt it. When the time comes to build we came make the current arena a practice facility or the home of Stony Brook women's basketball while we the bigger one hosts the Men...

Gonzaga is Gonzaga and their arena holds 6k if i'm not mistaken. We have a long way to go guys. Lets just hold on and continue to support our school. The best thing we can do is promoting our alma mater every day and introduce as many people to SBU athletics are possible. The future is bright!

I had a quick chat with coach Steve Prikiel today at my son's Boys and Girl's club Basketball game at Mount Elementary School.... He has a son in 2nd grade who plays basketball and is a All Star kid from what I've been told...  I just congratulated him with winning the AE and being in the First seed and wished him good luck in the Playoffs... Not much more besides small talk but Coach prikiel is a real down to earth guy and he will talk to anyone anytime....

Good Luck Coach and SB Basketball in the playoff's and lets get this done this year and get into the NCAA. maybe with some luck a 13 seed !!!!

I cant wait for the day that Arena is finally completed. It's funny how Prichard said they are ahead of schedule... That Arena should have been completed already and I can't remember how many times the state postponed  the start of construction due to other projects going on and they took the Arena Funds to complete them !!!!  That's water under the bridge and SB Basketball will only get bigger and stronger when future players see this beautiful Arena and want to play here !!!

The University  has about $6 million  coming to it  from the state. The plan is to add about 2200 seats  so we go over 10k in seating. When the state releases the money is another story  - we know how that goes. But yes our stadium will expand a  plan is in place  already.

So by filling out the bowl, you mean the north end zone where the red tarp currently is?  Looks like 2200 seats to me!  Great news.

I also heard a few years back that they were going to fix up some of the press boxes to have doors opening forward onto terraces.  That hasnt gone anywhere and im not sure it will.

I think the 6 million will cover seats on the visitors side along with added restrooms and  a concession stand-but that was last November.  Dont even know if the State relaesed any funding yet.

Speaking of the State.. Look how long it took the State to finally give the all clear to start with the basketball Arena. Without going back to look at the first start date , but I think it was suppose to start in  2008. !!! Ouch. Lavelle Stadium has another 4 years to go with the extra 2600 seat expansion!!!! Gotta love NYS !!!!

Just to add something else... Now that SB Football is in the CAA Lavelle Stadium would be the smallest in size, so if i'm not mistaken, they have to make the stadium larger. Maybe someone else on the board could elaborate more on that. I'll try to dig that up !!!!!!

Anyone else get  their information package about the new arena ? It was sent to season ticket holders.    Gives  info on how season tickets are going to be distributed  for the new arena, also mentions  season tickets are on the rise for our last season in Pritchard Gym  2013-2014. Good sign  the fan base is  expanding   e3very season.

Steve Pikell contract extended to 2017, with that We should only get better each passing year..  Also, Pikell and wife donated $ 50,000 back to the Stony Brook program and Hospital. Way to go coach,  that says a lot for your continue support and building of a Franchise team !!!!!

The contract extension is good for our program and the University. He has always represented the University   in a positive  way on and off the court.  Good for him and us!

Coach Pikiell has been nothing but a first class basketball coach, person, and representative of our University since the day he stepped on campus and this is a well earned and deserved reward.

The growth and development of the men's basketball program over the last eight years has been remarkable.

While we see all of the good and exciting things going on around SBU and the athletic program the bottom line is that recruiting and building a successful programs, that wins with players who are good citizens and graduate, at a conference/level like ours is extremely difficult and rare.

Practically this extension also allows Coach P and his staff to go out and recruit kids into the 14-15 class being able to let them (and their families) know that Coach P will be here to see them through their entire time at Stony Brook which is an important selling point.

With the new rules changes about when practice can start (42 days before the first game) we are around three months from the start of the first official basketball practice of the 13-14 season!
Title: Re: Stony Brook Seawolves Basketball News, Press Releases, etc

Something we should not overlook is that Coach P has been able  to retain all his coaching  staff so far.. That's a huge plus for continuity  and the health of the program. We have a couple of assistants who could very well  be D1 head  coaches Jay Young and Lamar Chapman come to mind but for now are  still with our program. That's healthy for the team and the new kids coming in.

Actually, there's one more that hasn't been formally announced yet--Joel Angus.  He's a walk-on as well, and also a good-sized forward.

It brings up an interesting situation.  With Resner, Angus and McGrew all non-scholarship roster members, The team is made up of 15 players (the max allowed, I believe), but only 12 scholarship members (one short of the max).  In other words, SBU for this coming season actually has one scholarship position left, but no place to put him in the roster total.  As near as I can figure, Coach P. is saving an extra scholarship slot for the 2014-2015 season when there will be 3 scholly seniors graduating.  The result will be the availability of 4 new scholarship slots next year.

I guess I may misunderstand the NCAA rules here. But, perhaps you can fill me in a little CAPTAIN.  The SBU site says McGrew accepted a "Grant-in Aid" offer.  Is that the same (or count the same) as an athletic scholarship?

Post by: sbugold on July 02, 2013, 12:54:44 pm
Sorry about that, guys.  MY BAD!!  I misunderstood the term, and thought it was some variation to the normal scholarship route.  But, apparently not.  Sorry to have wasted your time!!
Title: Re: Stony Brook Seawolves Basketball News, Press Releases, etc
Post by: captaindj21 on July 02, 2013, 12:57:25 pm
Grant-in-aid is NCAA lingo.  Only high school kids sign national letters of intent.  It's exactly that.  An intent to play for a specific school.  Once a kid transfers to a JUCO, another 4-year school, they can only sign a grant-in-aid, financial package.  It's a little more clear cut in basketball.  Full scholarship or walk-on.  Other sports offer partial scholarships.  Hope that clears it up.

I don't know if it's true, but I saw a listing of your non-conference schedule on the AE board.  If confirmed, that is an extremely ambitious schedule.  They have you playing VCU, Indiana, LaSalle, Canisius, Loyola (MD), Columbia, Detroit, Toledo and Fla. Atlantic on the road, and Northeastern, Marist, St. Francis (NY), Cornell, FDU and some D3 at home.  I think that's too many non-conf. games, so perhaps some of them are in some type of exempt tournament, which I believe you can play in every few years.  I would assume the schedule will come out this month, but if this is true you should be more than ready for the league season.......

And people over on the AE board will still give us a hard time for having a d3 on the schedule (I don't think they understand that playing D3 does not affect RPI and is really a glorified exhibition.

I have a feeling this could be a run and gun team. Very quick and  bigger than we have seen .  If they play solid defense they will be hard to beat, scoring will not be an issue.

Chair. This is my first year as a Basketball season ticket holder and what sold me was the idea of having first pick in next years new Arena plus, they are also doing something most larger schools do.. Points, you get points for every ticket you buy and that will give you priority for seating......

All of his tweets were pretty revealing.  Scott King playing as a big 3 at times probably because they see McGrew playing as a back-up 4, possibly starting 3 guards, and Walker getting minutes at the 3 caught my eye.

Re-seeding? Campus sites? no way

Title: Re: Stony Brook Seawolves Basketball News, Press Releases, etc
Post by: ecasadoSBU on October 03, 2013, 06:34:58 pm
Lets say the 6 seed upsets the #3 seed in the QF. Lets also assume that 2 beats 7 and 4 beats 5 and that the #1 goes and beats #8. Normally the #1 seed would go on to play  the winner of the 4vs5 game. Instead they will face the #6 seed because the #6 seed is the lowest seed to advance to the semis. so each round gets reseeded with the #1 playing against the lowest seeded team standing

I've read lots of great things about the potential for this team over this past summer and fall.  Coach P., the papers, Twitter and the blogs have been effusive about the abilities and expectations for each and every scholarship player--with one glaring exception, Kam Mitchell!.  I haven't seen his name mentioned even once!

From the time he was first recruited a couple of years back, I have read and seen videos about him, which certainly showed him as an amazing 3-point shooter, with skill cutting to the basket and a tremendous free-throw shooter.  What happened?  I had been thinking he was going to be the role player that came off the bench late in the game when the Seawolves were in trouble and needed quick scoring--a la Marcus Rouse!!

Can any of you guys close to the practice sessions shed any light?  Has he not worked hard enough for Coach?  Is he a disaster on defense?  What's the scoop?

The thread indicates we had a scrimmage at Central Connecticut state and one at Yale. Just something to mull over while we anticipate basketball season!

I was looking at Ken Pomeroy's site today, and wow, the AE Conference is really struggling this year (not that I need to tell you guys).  5 Teams over 300 out of 351 total.  Only one team under 100 (Stony Brook at #99), and only 2 under 200 (UVM and Albany at 167 & 184).  Hartford is at 233, and then it's the bottom of the conference.  I think it's safe to say that the winner of the conference tournament will be in a play-in game, which I think is pretty cool.  You get the entire country watching your team, and if you win, you get 2 games on national television.  All in all, I'd imagine you are fairly pleased with 9-4 at this point.  I still think it comes down to you and UVM.

Im a kenpom fan myself but the RPI numbers are going to be interesting also (I hate rpi).  We may win and lose spots in the rpi every league game this season.  You are right about us and UVM being the front runners.  Albany is going to be in the mix also.  The romantic in me wants us to get Albany in a semifinal in Albany as the higher seed then play UVM at there place to win It all just to get over the choke label.  The realist says get the 1 seed and don't face Albany or UVM until you host them in the brand new sold out arena.  The one major strength we have over the past few years is we almost always win the ones we are supposed to.  Teams don't get that off night upset over us that Vermont and Albany tend to get a couple times a year.  13-3 should be good enough to get us that 1 seed and I think we do that.

We already have  an  AE win so  12-3 is very realistic  going forward.

I wasn't sure where to put this topic, but mow that SB Arena is just about complete I think it would be a wise move to introduce a skating rink on top of the basketball  floor so SB can finally move their hockey team to NCAA div1 and play home instead of the Rinks... I believe, the extra money SB sinks into the Arena for a rink would come back 10 fold... SB hockey is currently ranked, I think 6 in the country in the ACHA league...  Just imagine how many more people open their eyes to SB University if they finally build a Hockey rink and SB goes into the NCAA.....Hockey on Long island is huge with the young kids and what could be better watching SB play BU at home!!!  . P.S. I am going to the Rinks Saturday night to whats them play West Chester!!!!!

I just found my answer on why SB did not build a hockey rink inside of the new Arena. One man... JIM FIORE!!! I am glad he's gone.. For approximately a million dollars more, SB could have laid the foundation for a ice skating rink.. Listen to SBH head coach interview with WUSB radio... It's a damn shame..

Way to kick a guy when he's down. JF did a remarkable job for SBU athletics, and if not for him, there would be no arena...period.

Sure, it would be nice to have a rink, just like it would be nice to have an 8,000 seat arena and 20,000 seat stadium. But you can't have it all day one.

To blame the guy who delivered the arena for not also delivering a rink is unfair.

Lets not even go there with that.. The AD did some good things with the AD department but he also did a lot of bad...Building a 8000 seat Arena at this time would have been a total waste of money ...But preparing the new Arena for a future Rink would not have cost all that money.. Listen to SBH Coach about what it would have taken to begin the process  of building a ice Rink...... First  of all  I'm all for our hockey team moving  up to full Div 1 status and playing on campus. They are good  and hockey is a big draw on Long Island.  Downside is the NCAA requires  your home ice on campus  in a 3000 seat arena.  Also big downer is Title 9 and adding x amount of male scholarships along with balancing it  with  x amount of   female scholarships. At some point I'm sure hockey will get their rink and be a Div  1 sport instead of club.  We have come light years in a short time with our facilities and I hope it only gets better.  I cant fault our former AD for saying no  for now, that 1 million can be spent elsewhere. I'm sure in 10 years  Stonybrook  Athletics we see today will be totally different including an expanded football stadium.  Lets sell out the arena  for hoops every night as we sell out Pritchard now , maybe go to another  conference membership and a hockey rink is feasible.
I have followed football since their D3 days in the mid 1990's on the little field playing powers like the Merchant Marine Academy and Gettysburgh College. Now we are in the CAA  with FBS  teams on our  schedule every season. We have to keep pushing the Stonybrook brand and building fan support. It will happen.

Go where? My comment pertains only to his record as AD, and very few will find fault with his accomplishments as an administrator and advancing athletics at SBU.

You however, choose to bring up the circumstances regarding his dismissal. There are only a handful of people who know the whole story, and despite your exhaustive reading and fact-finding....I'm sure you're not one of them (neither am I). And no, I'm not a family member, just someone who knows there are conflicting stories and who prefers not to pass judgement on a person before the entire truth is revealed.

College Hockey is expensive guys. Just sayin.

I think Fiore did the best he could with the limitations. Its not easy to have Division I hockey and I don't know how much revenue potential Division I hockey at Stony Brook has.

If the money comes around at a later time then we can add D-I hockey. For now lets see if we can just build the primary sports: FB, MBB, MLAX, WBB.

Think about all the subsidy that Stony Brook gets for athletic funding. That would probably increase a lot more if we funded DI men's hockey + Title IX requirements.

With that said... We gotta be happy with the situation we have right now. At the verge of opening a brand new 4k arena for our basketball programs. That is huge, and should allow us to compete well in the America East and in any other mid-major conference we choose to join in the future. Jim Fiore deserves credit for his efforts at building a great athletic department and despite the personal and workplace issues that led to his dismissal I think he did a great job for the University and set up Stony Brook for athletic success.

if SB hockey was to get a small venue rink on campus- perhaps in between the track and LaValle- i would show up to ice hockey games, and watch every telecast all season.  i might even buy an SB hockey jersey and wear it.

and when they create an AE double header at the garden with vermont, boston U, and UML, ill be there all weekend for the games.  8)

Agree on both counts. Hockey and our young wrestling  club team hopefully someday  will become D1 programs. Both have potential on Long Island just not now.  Sellout our arena  for hoops  every night, get SRO  crowds for football on  a regular  basis first then bring these  two teams up. Remember Title 9 plays into  all this  with female scholarship teams so money becomes a huge factor not to mention  coaching staffs , travel etc.  A ton of money for right now.

Stony Brook Hockey coach Chris Garofalo made  a real good point when he said Fiore should have prepared the Arena for a future rink.. It's my understanding, in Hockey, running the plumbing under the Floor. ( Basketball court) would have cost around a million Dollars....Iin the future, when the time is right,  you can finish up with the completion of the Rink.. He also went on to say  4000 seat arena is sufficient for NCAA rules.

I think Fiore should have given this a little more thought when he had the Arena built... We all know how long it takes to get anything down in NY so starting the ball now at a small price makes a lot of sense...

p.s...... Saturdays hockey game against West Chester University was a blast and SB won by the score of 14 to 1... This Saturday is the first round of the playoffs at the Rinks if anyone is interested in going, I'm going.........

Not to be the bearer of bad news - but a few answers on Hockey, all of which come from years in touch with the highest level at SBU, both athletically and otherwise.

1. SBU will NEVER sponsor hockey as an NCAA sport. You can use any form of reasoning you'd like - Title IX, space, facilities, recruiting - it's all irrelevant. It's pure infrastructure, funds distribution, and long term sports of emphasis. Fact is, with extremely rare exception, you CANNOT have a decent men's hockey program without sacrificing funding and preference to MBB or Football. That's it. I can literally count on one hand the programs who really pull it off, and all have 80+ million athletic budgets and are placed in hockey crazed regions of the US. Examples of places that do it well include Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin. All those have humongous media contracts - we don't. Places that try all three and fail include Boston College (terrible Football, basketball), New Hampshire (America East and STILL suffers from very, very tight funding problems), and Minnesota (marginal basketball and football by BCS standards). Like any company, athletic programs need to have a mission. That mission involves a primary and two secondaries. We're spread thin enough with two primaries (Football and MBB) and one secondary (M Lax). There simply isn't the infrastructure at a midatlantic mid-major to support D1 hockey without decimating the focus for football and MBB. This is what the administration believes, and what they have believed for quite a while. Apparently more places agree, such as the recent rash of sport cuts (Robert Morris with M Wrestling, Temple with their exceptionally famous W Crew program, multiple schools with baseball).

2. If you'd like an example of a single campus organization single-handedly decimating funding to other groups, Men's Ice Hockey takes over 100K in USG funding, derived from student fees which were supposed to be dedicated to groups that encourage wide student participation. Instead, a group of 16 students give or take has a budget that exceeds that of any other campus organization. Perfect case study of what it would do to an athletics and facilities budget. Hockey is a budget black hole - plain and simple.

3. Fiore is NOT the reason there's no hockey arena at SBU. Taken from an exceptionally reliable source - again at the TOP of SBU's admin - Charles Wang approached Kenny and offered to build her an on-campus hockey arena around when he was looking for places to tax dump. In the name of endorsing football and MBB aspirations, Kenny rejected. By far the correct and sound business move.

4. SBU's athletic budget is so bad that it can't even support sports it DOES sponsor - by name M&W swimming. How bout they just get those taken care of and get their Title IX back in order?

5. After multiple direct conversations with the top of SBU's administration, the only target sports SBU is considering in any potential athletic expansion are those sponsored by target conferences. This is critical, as the more sports sponsored by a candidate program - the more attractive they are to potential conferences. An example is NJIT's bid to join the America East - did anyone else notice that they just added MLax? BU did the same in their bid to join the Patriot League. Beyond that logic, Supporting a non-conference program is very difficult. It requires a different set of travel arrangements, scheduling arrangements, conference fees and contracts - Football alone is an incredible demand, but non-FBS conferences endorse it as an integrated entity (CAA Football, MVC Football, OVC Football aren't actually the same company as the CAA, MVC, OVC, although they have the same commissioner. NEC, Big South, and Big Sky I believe are integrated, however). Very very few D1 conferences support hockey - Only Big 10 comes to mind. Instead, SBU is interested in sports supported by the AAC, A-10, and CAA - proper all-sports targets. Those include W Crew, W Fencing, and Field Hockey. The last is most likely, as the AEC supports it too.

Before you jump all over me - I"m a humongous hockey fan, and watch my Penguins nearly every game. However, having been involved with SBU's admin and with prior understanding of the true budgetary mandate (something no member of SBU Hockey appears to have, or wants to have by the way these guys come off) and demand that D1 Hockey will have at SBU - I will again say it will NEVER happen at this school. It seems to just be easier to wage an artificially created media war instead of understanding that it's nothing against SBU Hockey that there's no program, nor is it a lack of facilities, foresight, or interest - it's simply not in the business plan of SBU Athletics. Period.

Thank you Redwyn for making this topic a closed topic.. Even though I am a little disappointment, you most likely are correct about fundings  for a Div1 Hockey team.. Hockey is a expensive sport and a school like SBU just does not have the funding and backing to even consider taking on a major sport like Hockey.... I actually asked Senator Lavalle tonight at the game if it would be possible to getting funding for a Hockey Arena and even though he loves hockey,  it's highly unlikely, in a roundabout way....

Nothing to be ashamed about on our end - simply put, if Syracuse can't field a M Ice Hockey team, we're not going to either.

As for the football stadium - my sources tell me that the money is locked, it's an attendance issue. Fact is, we can't regularly fill an 8500K stadium besides maybe our opener and homecoming. We still bring in D2 schools because we're stuck in that no-man's land between mid-level performance and poor attendance/low guarantees. No one wants to see us in the hollow confines of a 15000K facility if we can only put 5K into it. Remember, 15K is an FBS minimum - and that's 15K turnout, not capacity. We're gonna need to get that thing to its maximum at roughly 25K or so to be a reasonable candidate. The MAC will welcome us as the first TRUE NYC media-market FBS team with open arms when we're ready and U Mass advances to the AAC. But I'm in no rush to see that happen - gimme a few CAA titles and playoff wins first.

Stony Brook Hockey just won the ESCHL championship game, ( equivalent to winning the AE conference ) and now travels to Delaware for the national Championship series!

http://stonybrookhockey.com

These guys are good real good and could compete in the NCAA Div1 league!!!

Great job to them. ESCHL is competitive...but not D1 level by a margin. Penn State learning that now after moving up - and Big10 definitely not Hockey East or even ECAC level this year http://www.gopsusports.com/sports/m-hockey/sched/psu-m-hockey-sched.html

Any long term winning by a club program is always impressive though. What always blew me away about SBU Hockey was the consistency of its administration, and the foresight to involve alumni early and often. The input from professionals improves donation and streamlines administration that a group of 19 year olds simply can't provide. Men's Rugby recently embraced this and has made INCREDIBLE progress in the past few years. Hopefully we see SBU embrace the Hockey/Rugby model and advance to a formal "club varsity" status, where the university directly participates in the management of its marquee club sports (Ice Hockey, Rugby, Crew, Fencing) - a model pioneered by Greg Hartsuff at U Michigan Crew. Kudos to maturity prevailing in college club varsity sports.

I was reading rumors on twitter last month that there is a possibility that Hofstra and SBU will play each other again regularly and perhaps as soon as next year's OOC basketball. I really hope that is the case. Would be great for LI college sports.

Has anyone else heard anything?

Don't you think that it's about time the men's basketball team photo on the athletics website is updated?  It's a little embarassing to still have the official picture on the MBB tab representing the team from two years ago (i.e. Brenton, Hayes, Coley (with dreds), Bracey, Rouse, etc.)!!

Just thought I'd post a little progress report on Coley and McAlister re: their most recent games for their European teams:

Dave Coley (Iskra Svit-Slovakia): 21 pts., 5 reb., 5 steals, 2 assists (30 minutes)

Eric McAlister (Naestved-Denmark) 9 pts., 5 reb., 1 steal, 1 assist (14 minutes)

Yes, the curse has been lifted!!!! SBB will win the AE conference and make it to the big dance because we weren't chosen to win this year like previous years. As a matter of fact, not one expert even picked us... They picked Hartford.. But what!! Hartford??? Oh man, we are definitely making it to the dance this year!!!!!

Hartford gets the ESPN love because they have a starting lineup with 5 seniors.

I'm quite ok with this.  Preseason accolades mean nothing, I'm ready to see our guys prove themselves on the court.  The only teams that look dangerous are Hartford and Albany, and even Albany only has two real big men.

Regardless, you can never count Vermont out, and there is always a random team that comes out of nowhere.  Until we actually hoist the banner, I won't be celebrating.

Warney is indeed a beast. SBU would be sitting in the middle of the AE pack without him. Much as his numbers would justify a look in the NBA draft, unfortunately I don't think he fits at that level. He doesn't have guard skills and at forward he lacks a 3-point shot. He'll do very well in Europe though.

If this was last year then yea, I would agree with you 100% however, Warney has improved his foul shooting tremendously this year and he is getting better with his field goal shooting from 15 feet away from the basket. If he can improve on defense as you say then he would have a chance at getting picked up in the NBA draft. All my opinion of course..

Just got back from the game today, tough win against a feisty UMBC squad.

1. Warney got doubled every time he touched the ball but did a great job passing out of those doubles- almost had a triple double!
2. Puriefoy is starting to break out of his cold streak- he still took some awful shots but played way better than he has in the last few games. Still too many turnovers
3. Sekunda has a deadly jumper. It's nice seeing him and Kam get more confident
4. Nyama is really emerging into a solid player, he's an athletic freak

Not expecting much against Albany- that game is gonna be a BIG test for us

Great news about the coverage for both teams.

The UVM loss and close game with UMBC certainly bring up some question marks regarding what many thought this SBU team would be this year. On the surface one can always say, "Well, we NEVER win at UVM so no big deal" and the "all AE teams are tough" yaddayaddayadda....

No doubt it would be nice this weekend, heading into the long middle of AE play, to see SBU simply take care of a struggling Maine team with ease, wire-to-wire, and then get a win against UA on Monday. Maybe a spirited big game for Braley today back home!

Taking a break from chores today to watch both men/women, and already looking forward to attending the UA game on Monday. Go get 'em SBU.

Nice win today. Although Maine is not in good shape this year, comforting to see SBU simply win one without question. It's what a contending team should do against a weak opponent. Bring on UA.

Forgot to post here today. I think its clear than Maine doesn't belong in the same league as SBU. Beating a team by twice their score is terrible any way you look at it.... Maine would struggle in DII and Binghamton also.

Oh well, lets take advantage and kick continue to kick some butts.

I'll be there, in my seat, cheering the good guys. Not to hedge my hopes for a good performance, but UA is experienced and no doubt confident looking far ahead to the tournament no matter what happens tonight. SBU, despite a couple of fine players and some new talent, is very young. I hope they play well tonight, win or lose.

This is why this board lacks excitement. As ecasado wrote after the Vermont loss...different season, same results. The lack of real progress of this program does not inspire enthusiasm.
Title: Re: Stony Brook Seawolves Basketball News, Press Releases, etc
Post by: Wolfie_MD on January 19, 2015, 09:18:49 pm
Just got back from the game, horrible results. First, thoughts and prayers with Peter Hooley's family in this tough time. It's gotta be tough to be across the world at this time, hope everything is OK.

Now onto the game...horrible performance with the exception of Warney.  I've said it a million times but it doesn't matter that Warney is the best player in the conference if he doesn't get help. With Puriefoy disappearing recently, we really don't have a complement to Warney. I feel for the big guy- he does nothing but produce but basketball relies on some more talent for results.

1. Abysmal games from Puriefoy and Nyama- 1/9 shooting with 0 assists and 5 turnovers. I don't know what's happened to this guy but he's a shell of the player he was in his first two years. Unless he shakes off the yips (his shots were all over the place), I'd have to give strong consideration to giving Thrower some more minutes at PG. Stinks that Woodhouse can't play this year. Nyama also couldn't buy a bucket.

2. Nobody gets to the line- Warney had 8 of the 9 free throws in this game. None of our guards got to the line which is mind-blowing.

3. Bad 3 point shooting night- 4/22 from downtown ain't gonna cut it.

Again, I have to emphasize that Puriefoy really needs to turn it around if we have any sliver of a chance to make the Dance. Heck, we can't even beat Albany at home when they're playing without Hooley. I can't imagine what we'll be like on the road at UVM or Albany in the conference tourney.

Very disappointing loss. At some point, Pikiell is going to have to produce. He got outcoached by Will Brown (a local guy by the way, Miller Place)...again. We can talk 100 times about how he's cleaned up the program but its a results game. Norm Roberts cleaned up St John's too but he couldn't win.

Overall, I've lost considerable enthusiasm for the direction of this team. Thank goodness the students will be back for the next game.

Yes, pretty uninspired performance by the home team. UA vs SBU guard play was Men vs Boys.

Coach Brown appeared to work the game like a master, making adjustments and play-calls on the fly.

Frankly, just a beat-down of SBU.

yeah, that's gotta be tough on a college kid.  also being away from the team.  i feel for him.

but this game was another example of how intense conference rivalries can be- we can defeat #13 washington at their arena by 5 and then lose to unranked albany by 17 at home.  all within a few weeks.

besides warney, i actually think mcgrew has played well the last few games.  his #s show it.

and yes, carson with 5 turnovers, pretty much half of the team's total for the night.

just a note- i know im a broken record on 3 pointers- 4/22 on the night.  yes, i saw the last few minutes where we chucked up four attempts out of desperation.  make it 4/18.  still awful.

first loss at ifcu and it stings.  that's ok, we have another shot at albany and likely will get them a third time.  GO SB

My confidence in this team is shattered!!  I must admit, I never saw this coming; not so much that we might lose to UA, but that we weren't, apparently, ready to play.

When I saw that Hooley was not in the starting lineup, I thought: WOW-what a break (didn't know why at the time)!!  Maybe Albany just garnered some extra motivation out of Hooley's unfortunate situation.  But, even when you read Warney's quotes in the paper, you get the feeling that the Seawolves just weren't at their mental best.  Somebody please fix Tre; there's no way this team can recover without him!!  Wins against both Albany and Vermont are musts now the next time around, not to mention not allowing some underling conference team to beat them!!

"Wins against both Albany and Vermont are musts now the next time around, not to mention not allowing some underling conference team to beat them!!"

In my humble opinion, good efforts against these two teams are musts in the next round (and not necessarily wins) if there is any hope for good play in the conference tournament. While last night was a whuppin', there is still 1 1/2 months left to get better (or get back to being better).

UA and UVM are obviously front-runners now for the top two spots, but there are a lot of games left. Hey, if this is a slump SBU is going through, it's a pretty good time to have it in a one-bid conference! In a perfect Seawolf World they snap out of it, get better over the next month, and will be firing come tournament time. Extending this "slump theory," could be UA and UMV are due for theirs later, at a bad time.

None of this is to suggest that last night was not a disaster! But, let's see what the coaching staff and players can do. SBU still has some good wins, and some good road wins, this year (in the big picture, a resume as good or better than UVM and UA right now). There are still a lot of new to newish players on this team figuring things out. And some crazy stuff happens most every year in the AE.

Being lazy with a copy/paste from the Albany/Vermont aka AE Forum...

1) Rowley was the best player on the court last night
2) Rowley and Hooley are a better duo than Warney and whomever
3) Rest of the lineup could favor Albany as well, debatable either way
4) SBU could certainly be playing on March 14. If so, just hope the people crushing them today stay home.

I don't agree at all. An average team that plays a few good games in the tournament and then gets blown out as a 16 seed is hardly reason for celebration.

Perhaps interesting to pause and consider that the last five AE tournament winners were: 2, 2, 2, 4, and 4 seeds and three of those five won on the enemy's floor. Something that everyone knows but maybe gets forgotten in mid-January with a desire for excellence. Every year is a new one, this year's tournament has a new twist with home courts in the mix, but history suggests pretty much anyone in the top 4 is seriously in play at the end depending on who gets hot.

"I don't agree at all. An average team that plays a few good games in the tournament and then gets blown out as a 16 seed is hardly reason for celebration."

But isn't that about all you can expect coming out of the AE? In recent memory, arguably the greatest team in the history of the AE (Coppenrath's Vermont) only won one NCAA tournament game with a big upset. Maybe Herrion's Drexel teams won one? But that's going WAY back. Other than those very rare exceptions the reality is AE $$$ just cannot compete. The gold medal is simply getting to play one game in the big sandbox.
Title: Re: Stony Brook Seawolves Basketball News, Press Releases, etc

Listen, I would be thrilled with being a 16 seed and getting run out of the gym by Kentucky. Just making the NCAA tourney would be an incredible milestone for this team.

Anyway, I woke up today not feeling nearly as bad- we just need to get hot at the end of the year. Let's take care of UMass and Binghamton and we'll be in decent shape. Now we need to hope for Albany or UVM to slip a bit. Heck if they split their season series and we steal one of the remaining games against UVM or Albany (far from guaranteed), we'll be a candidate for a #2 seed which would be just fine. Conference play is still in its infancy.

Either way, seeding doesn't mean too much in the AE Tourney. Hosting championship games hasn't helped us too much recently.

We need to get to the tourney by any means necessary. Whether we get blown up or not after we get there I could care less. All we need to show is progress for our recruits so that we can keep recruiting at a high level and eventually have a team that CAN actually win a game or two in the NCAAs. Incremental steps its what we need not losing in the championship every year.

Don't get me wrong. I'm extremely grateful that our program has gotten to this point. It can be much worst. But it can also be much better. We should have higher expectations now...

I'm surprised that nobody had a comment on Pikiell's starting lineup yesterday.  I thought Thrower and Burnett did great at the starting guard positions, and was especially pleased with Burnett's energy and movement.  I think he actually sparked the others, including Puriefoy!!  Hope to see more of him in the coming weeks.  Good to see the team with some of their MoJo back.

I thought about it yesterday but its a good point. Until Puriefoy gets going, I think it won't hurt to let Thrower run the offense. Puriefoy off the bench may be a better fit for him- he could be instant offense in reserve.

Burnett is an interesting player because we've seen so little of him. I love lefty shooters and it wouldn't hurt to get him some minutes in the rotation.
He's a young kid and I didn't like seeing him stranded on the bench anyway. I'd love to see more of his game, he's got decent size and is pretty athletic.

I had very high hopes with thrower coming out of Michigan, higher then i should have.. But after watching him play in every game, I am quite disappointed to say the least. He is, unfortunately, a work in progress. Having him start over Tre would be a HUGE mistake at this time.. I do agree with handing over the torch to Burnett and allow him to mature quicker... Tre should be downgraded to Bench and let the other bench players start.

Vermont has more freshmans on their team this year then SB has and they somehow made more 3's last night against Lowell then any other NCAA team in the past 5 years. Maybe we can borrow one or two of their long ball shooters! Coach P really needs to focus on guards who can shoot from the perimeter next season, I think we are dead last in the conference in that cat!!!

Definitely agree on getting a 2, who can shoot the 3!  The main reason SBU has lost in the Finals over the years is because of poor shooting at the 2 and 3 spots.

agreed agreed agreed.  not only missing threes, but poor shot selection of 3s.  there is a time and a place.

look if we can hit upper 30s or maybe 40%, sure, shoot'em.  but the off balance in traffic desperation attempt after a long defensive stand is ill advised.  especially in a tight game or up.

Looks like the Seawolves finally know what it's like to meet some competition on their trip.  After three straight relatively easy wins they just lost to Lithuania Select by 20 points.  I guess maybe it will serve to build character!!

Our Savior New American is a school full of renegades.  The kids are imported from African countries without the ability to read or write.  Pikiell knows about these kids, but they'd have zero chance of getting into school.

Woodhouse is  supposed to be a deadly assist guy who can give 10-12 points a game also.   I  would expect he moves up at the end of the season.

great news!

do players really not want to play in the post today?  too many glory hogging shooters!?!?!  too many teams using two shooting 4s and no 5s?

Quote
It was here that Warney displayed a slice of the loyalty that defines him. The attention from all these schools was nice, but it barely made a ripple in his decision process. Within weeks, he’d committed to Stony Brook, and he stuck with it.

“A lot of kids pick the highest level,” Pikiell says. “Jameel picked the right place.”

“I haven’t had one issue with him,” Pikiell says of his star. “I’ve been around a lot of great players, and there’s always something. Jameel has been a dream.”

-- Ryan Burnett at St. Leo's: 18 points, 9 rebounds

Congrats guys.  Good to see you doing well!!

Just for the record I have been following the brackets on CBS  Sports  so  two weeks ago we were a 14 seed in the East playing in the Barclays Center against Virginia.  Last week we were in the West Region in Spokane against Oregon, now we are in the Mid West against Miami in Providence. The last two were 13 seeds  This has been  a crazy ride but fun.

McGrew and Thrower charged with stealing 5000 bucks from fellow student. Again, I'll presume they're innocent for now until proven guilty but its not looking good.

Just bad decision making. Thrower may have just cost himself a spot on the team. McGrew is on his way out but not a good way to say goodbye to Stony Brook

Just me, or do some of the details just seem odd? Including the whole reported timeline: this allegedly happened last week, SBU police on it (so I assume all critical admins knew, yes?), go forward with a celebratory press conference and then hours later this news?

Incredibly strange....

The original reports said that a hearing would be held May 2 re: McGrew and Thrower.  It looks like proceedings may have been pushed back.

Suffolk First District Court has case details for Deshaun Thrower (case no. 2016SU013508) and Rayshaun McGrew (case no. 2016SU013509),  with June 13 given for the next appearance date.

Third game wasn't too bad. Came across this:

"One big bright spot for the Mavericks in this contest was second-string center Jameel Warney. The undrafted Stony Brook product put up 14 points and eight rebounds, and that doesn’t begin to tell the story of just how active he is on the defensive end. He’s a bit undersized to play center, but he makes up for it with an extremely high motor and a fearless attitude on both ends."

Warney played in his final Summer League game for the Mavericks last night.  He played less that 14 minutes.  But, his line looked as follows:

8 Pts, 10 Reb. (7 Off), 1 Blk, 2 Stls, 2 Assts

I can, imagine he's not going to get some real hard consideration from several teams!!  Great work, Jameel!!

What a$$hole came up with this great idea?  Maybe, I should starting looking at Rutgers BB tickets! How does Stony Brook justify charging $32 a ticket without any benefits except the seats have a good view. The AD will definitely be hearing from me!

I am going to wait to see my renewal online before i go off about that. Looks like I wont be renewing my tickets for this year if thats the case. Hammer,
The whole section 103 (right behind the visitors bench) is now considered to be a premium section. I have 2 seats on the aisle and my buddy has seats 3 and 4.  My buddy and I are pretty pissed! In the last season (2013-14) in Pritchard, I had 4 tickets located 7 rows behind the Stony Brook bench at $9 per ticket per game. In the first season at the new arena, I had 2 tickets in Section 103 (3rd Row behind the visitors bench) at $18.67 per ticket. In the 2016-17, my same seats will cost me $32 per ticket for a 14 home game schedule or $30 per ticket for a 15 home game schedule.  Stony Brook has to stop thinking they are UNC or Kentucky!

So what are you going to do Lax? Will you bite the bullet and pay up or opt out!!. I'm waiting to see if they raised the ticket prices for everyone else. I have 3 seats in section 111, 2nd row up. If those tickets prices go up almost 75% more, like your section is, I'm out for the season.. There will be plenty of seats available to watch the premium games if I chose to go!

I'm in the same situation . If my prices go up then I opt out  and select individual games to attend .  Also drop my Seawolves  United  donations with my season tickets.   We are still a small fish in a big pond .

Just got an E Mail we can renew our season tickets for basketball beginning Wednesday  8/3 .  On line or in person at the arena.
I received the same email plus a phone call to say that my season tickets have increased $170 per ticket!!! What a$$hole came up with this great idea?  Maybe, I should starting looking at Rutgers BB tickets! How does Stony Brook justify charging $32 a ticket without any benefits except the season have good view. The AD will definitely be hearing from me!

I didn't get any phone calls. Are you freaking kidding me Lax. They are raising ticket prices that much???? Year 2 and they have the balls to do that already.. I am going to wait to see my renewal online before i go off about that. Looks like I wont be renewing my tickets for this year if thats the case. There will be plenty of seats to purchase for games to watch... Not really interested in paying $32 per seat per game to watch SB play a div3 team. I get more fun watching Ward Melville High School play Brentwood!

The only seats being increased in price are the seats behind the benches. So, you don't have to worry about any increases in your costs. On Friday, I spoke with Rob Emmerich (assistant AD), which I spoke with for 30 minutes about how disappointed I am on how Stony Brook is pushing out the regular guy for a few extra bucks. I've been pretty loyal with this school over the decades including playing on their first DI team, which had no scholarships and we actually had to pay for our own airfare when we traveled to Colorado to play Air Force and Denver.  My angst is not just about me, but how the average person is being treated in these two sections. I understand for some people, the increase in ticket prices aren't a big deal, but there should be a limit. Rob will be relaying my displeasure to the other board members, who are in charge of setting the ticket prices. I'll keep updated on the next chapter of this saga.

PS - I know this is old news, but it sounds like Rutgers might be coming to Stony Brook for a hoops game.  Also, they are pushing to have 16 games at home in 2016-17.

They tried some of this crap last yr with me and my agency. I work with at risk kids and we spend 1,500 a yr on men's and women's games. We go to 12 men's games and sit behind the basket. Last yr I was told that I could get the price THEY gave me the yr before but I would have to pay more than double for a couple of games they considered premium. I called up and blasted them and said I would go to LIU Post and watch. Only after I said that I would cancel my order did they give me the price that they set the yr before. I never knew that Vermont was a premium ticket , what a joke. I agree with Lax, they are going to price out the average family. Look how they ruined the football tailgate area by charging a stupid amount for those spots that remain empty. I am also a proud alumni, but this crap has to stop or nobody will go.

So far  home games - Columbia, Hampton/Robert Morris, Rutgers and Northeastern .
Away - Maryland , Boston College, Hofstra, Brown, Towson and St. Francis-Pa.  I expect Lehigh and NJIT as home games so that would be six at home and six road games that's 12 total missing at least 1 game maybe 2 .

I think you have St. Francis (PA) and Hampton/Robert Morris switched around--the former is at home, the latter away.

Lehigh is another home game for sure, but date is still TBD.

Looks like you're probably right, Checkmate.  I was looking at the Big Apple Buckets site.  But, it seems like they have a couple of errors.  They show St. Francis at SBU, but the SFU official site shows it in PA as you said.  But, more important, Big Apple shows the 12/10 Rutgers game AT RUTGERS  ..  Now, I hope we can all agree that that is bogus!!!!

Dear Season Ticket Holders,

There are not many great feelings that come along with the end of summer but it does mean that basketball season is not far off.  I know many of you have been asking about the 2016-17 schedule and you won't have to wait much longer.  The entire 2016-17 schedule that will feature 15 home games will be released tomorrow at 2 p.m. but I am happy to give you an exclusive look at the non-conference schedule at this time.

The non-conference home schedule features seven contests, highlighted by the return of former head coach Steve Pikiell and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on December 10.  Rutgers will be one of two Big 10 opponents on the schedule this year as the Seawolves take on Maryland on Tuesday, November 22 in College Park, Md.  Stony Brook will visit ACC foe Boston College on Nov. 20.

Stony Brook hosts the Merchant Marine Academy on Nov. 4 in an exhibition contest before it officially opens the 2016-17 season at home against Columbia on Nov. 11.

See the full non-conference schedule below.  If you haven't renewed your tickets, please CLICK HERE to renew online or call us at 631-632-WOLF.

Friday, Nov. 4 - USMMA (H) (Exhibition)
Friday, Nov. 11 - Columbia (H)
Sunday, Nov. 20 - Boston College (A)
Tuesday, Nov. 22 - Maryland (A)
Friday, Nov. 25 - Towson (A)
Saturday, Nov. 26 - Hampton or Robert Morris (at Towson)
Wednesday, Nov. 30 - Loyola Maryland (H)
Saturday, Dec. 3 - Northeastern (H)
Tuesday, Dec. 6 - Lehigh (H)
Saturday, Dec. 10 - Rutgers (H)
Tuesday, Dec. 13 - Hofstra (A)
Saturday, Dec. 17 - Saint Francis Pa. (A)
Wednesday, Dec. 28 - NJIT (H)
Saturday, Dec. 31 - Brown (A)

At least we are not paying to watch SB play any div3 games in the regular season!

It is sad, but we all knew it was a longshot at this time for Warney to make the team when there was 2 guys ahead of him. One being a 2nd round draft pick. Warney will most likely stick around in the Mavericks D league. Who knows. If he improves then next year this time he could be on their Roster.. The NBA D league is not like the old D league. Players make more money today and have a better chance at getting picked first for an NBA team...

Coach Jay Young — who Warney states has kicked him out of at least 10 practices during his time at Stony Brook, gets the credit for his early development.

Warney laughs — he’d rather talk about coach Pikiell chewing him out for his lack of defense and rebounding in a 105-99 loss the game before against Toledo.

wow, wonder what that's about!

otherwise- notice the theme during that stretch?  tough losses, all poor shooting from 3-land.  I know, Im a broken record...

ICYMI, Jameel Warney's first game as a Texas Legend:

13 Min., 7 pts., 4 reb., 1 blk.  He was called for 5 fouls, which did limit his playing time.

I thought you guys would all enjoy seeing this.  Warney went double-double in only his second game as a Texas Legend.  Is it possible he might join the Mavericks soon?

Maryland versus Stony Brook at the New Coliseum on 11/11/17.

Updated November 21, 2016 12:01 AM
By Mark Herrmann     mark.herrmann@newsday.com

HIGHLIGHTS
Lineup for season includes Hofstra taking on Villanova
Planners later hope to attract NCAA tourneys and March Madness
The new Nassau Coliseum will make an immediate college basketball splash next season with local flavor, national flair and the 2016 NCAA champion Villanova Wildcats. A pair of games will tip off a Long Island Hoops program that also includes plans to attract postseason conference tournaments and March Madness.

On opening night of the season, Nov. 11, Stony Brook will play Maryland. “For us to open the new Nassau Coliseum is a significant event for us,’’ Stony Brook director of athletics Shawn Heilbron said. “We want to expand our fan base across Long Island, and to play one of the powerhouse programs in the country is a great opportunity.”

Then, on Dec. 22, 2017, Hofstra will face Villanova, marking a reunion for Wildcats coach Jay Wright, who coached Hofstra from 1994-2001.

“We had some great games at the Coliseum when I was at Hof stra, defining games,” Wright said on the phone Sunday before his team played in the final of the Charleston (S.C.) Classic. He recalled beating St. John’s in front of a big crowd and had even stronger memories of an earlier game against Penn — a blowout loss. “That showed us how far we had to go,” he said.

As for next year’s date at the arena that officially will be known as the New Coliseum presented by New York Community Bank, Wright said: “To get a game on Long Island is always important to Villanova because we have a lot of alumni there. And Patty and I still have a lot of friends at Hof stra and in Rockville Centre, where we lived.”

It will be only his second coaching appearance on the Island since he left Hofstra. Villanova visited Stony Brook in 2006.

“He’s a good friend and he also played a big part in the success that Hofstra has had. He’s good for the game,” said Joe Mihalich, the Pride’s current coach and Wright’s fellow Philadelphia native.

“It’s going to be an absolutely fabulous venue,” Mihalich said of the Coliseum, which is visible from campus, “so to get a chance to play in there and a chance to play against the national champions is going to be a great experience for all of our kids. It’s also going to be a great event for the whole community — our students, fans and alumni and season-ticket holders.”

Brett Yormark, CEO of Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment, which operates both Barclays Center and the new Coliseum, said there will be a continued commitment to college basketball in Uniondale.

“We’ve been very aggressive in pitching postseason tournaments, no different from what we’ve done at Barclays Center,” he said. “We have also been submitting several bids to the NCAA to bring the first and second rounds of the men’s college basketball tournament.”

The Coliseum has hosted The Big Dance before, including Villanova’s triple-overtime win over Northeastern in 1982.

Even in the regular season, Stony Brook coach Jeff Boals said, the arena will help the Seawolves “broaden the Stony Brook” brand and draw alumni who live in the city. The opener will showcase the debut of his first recruiting class, including center Anthony Ochefu, whose brother Daniel was a starter for Villanova’s title team.

The building will be on display, too. “I’ve toured it,” Heilbron said, “and it is definitely going to be a first-class facility.”

New Nassau Coliseum dreams big with college basketball plans

Hofstra and Stony Brook, who will play each other in their annual Long Island rivalry game Tuesday night, both will regularly face national-caliber teams as part of an ambitious plan for college basketball at the new Nassau Coliseum.

The plan also includes a recently filed application to host the opening rounds of the 2019 NCAA Tournament and an effort to attract major conference tournaments, according to Brett Yormark.

Any conference is on the table, said Yormark, CEO of Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment, which operates both Barclays Center and the Coliseum.

“Our goal is to dream big,” Yormark said Sunday as Hofstra played Kentucky before a lively crowd of 7,514 in Brooklyn. Pointing out that Barclays Center will host the ACC championship tournament this March, he added, “We dream big and try to deliver. So far in Brooklyn we have, and my expectation is we’ll do the same out there.”

His group announced last month that Stony Brook will play Maryland, and Hofstra will meet 2016 NCAA champion Villanova (with former Hofstra coach Jay Wright) in 2017, the debut year of the refurbished Coliseum. Yormark emphasized on Sunday that those games will be only the start of a push to have the local teams play big-name opponents, as well as scheduling neutral-site games between major colleges.

“We don’t randomly select teams. We want the best teams but we also want them to have some connection to the marketplace, whether it’s recruits on the team or alumni or otherwise,” Yormark said. “The whole goal when we open the Coliseum is to glamorize local schools and to bring attention to the marketplace. The games will be nationally distributed. By more people watching nationally — not just fans, but coaches and athletic directors — they will recognize the Coliseum as a go-to place for college basketball.”

With the Coliseum still under construction, Hofstra’s arena will be the go-to place Tuesday night when the two Long Island teams meet for a third consecutive season in their revived series. Each side has won one, and both games have been close.

“It’s a great rivalry game, we can’t wait to play again,” Hofstra coach Joe Mihalich said at Barclays Center after the 96-73 loss to No. 6 Kentucky. “We want to get this taste out of our mouth. We want to build on what happened today. Hopefully some of our Hofstra people will come out to the game because it has the makings of a good college basketball night.”

Stony Brook also is coming off an emotion-packed game, a 71-66 loss at home to Rutgers and former Stony Brook coach Steve Pikiell at home on Saturday. Roland Nyama, who has been with the Seawolves for the rivalry the past two years, said, “We don’t want to lose against Hofstra.”

Not sure what thread to put this in. But with all the HC scandals going on lately, looks like a couple of AE coaches could actually get a shot at moving up the ladder, Vermont, Albany... approx 50 coaching positions will be open come spring. Is coach Boals too early in his coaching career to be one of those coaches who makes the move??

In light of these scandals I think it's quite likely several positions open up, but I'm not sure that they'd all necessarily be HC positions. Boals already left an assistant position at Ohio St. to be the HC here. He wouldn't leave here unless it was for a HC gig at a bigger school and/or bigger conference. How many of those will be open is anyone's guess. I wouldn't worry too much for now.

Fitting since he just played Michigan St. to the wire and nearly won.

~$3M a year. Incredible. What were we paying him again? Something like 400k? When you get more money from your TV deal in one year, than the entire AE and CAA schools have made this millennium combined, you can do stuff like that.

And to think, the only reason they're even in the B1G was because they had FBS football and were near NYC. By that metric, we have just as much of a case for Big Ten membership as they do. Crazy.

Not that we needed to be reminded of that game, but three win Norfolk St. lost to Elizabeth City St. at home tonight 76-67. Elizabeth City St. is a D2 HBCU located in North Carolina.

Warney went for 33 pts in the last Legends game and is averaging roughly 20/10 this season.

From the game write-up:

>>>>>
A call-up has yet to come for Warney and yes, we’re all waiting with bated breath, but in the interim he continues to dominate the G League with maximum effort.

“The Texas Legends are my family. I hold this organization well in my heart. I go out everyday and try to play for this organization and play for the people in this organization because I love them dearly and they love me. That helps me everyday to know I’m one of the best players in the league and keep going.”
<<<<<<

The Mavericks are, of course, terrible this year and have been in the news for other negative reasons lately, and just wondering if any of this and above increases his chances for a move up? I know there is the massive business end of things I would know nothing about, but I wonder if for a struggling team/organization bringing in a "fresh face" or two for this second half of the season might be on the table.

I get a sense Warney has always been "NBA or bust," and I would assume obviously one doesn't want to languish in the G League for long in that case.

He's passing up some bucks by not playing in Europe. He's a class act and deserves a shot.

Correct me if i am wrong, but it is my understanding majority of players in the G league only move up if they are on a 2 way contract. Something Warney is not !!!

Almonacy is transferring according finkelstein. I never like it when players transfer and veteran guys are always valuable so I'm kinda bummed about this.

Not surprised either .  He loved to dribble and  dodge defenders  but the scoring he had at Brentwood never showed  at the D1 level.  Sign another big in the 6'7 range or better . Maybe nail a PItt transfer  they are  bailing out on the Panthers . Having ACC type on the team is a major plus .   I'm really optimistic about this team going forward in 2018-2019

Certainly expected RE: Almonacy. Don’t think Boals gave him a shot really. If ever there was a time to do so, it was this year. At least during games, Almonacy always appeared to be a good soldier, cheering on his teammates. I wish him well at his next stop.

Agree that we need some size moving forward.

Not surprised- wish Mike the best of luck wherever he ends up. He by all accounts was a great teammate and never got in trouble.

Time to fortify the front court with some big men. This gives us another scholarship to play with. We have guards/swings all over the place. Give me a solid front court weapon and we have the potential to be a very solid team next year.

If he signed here, I assume he would sit a year and thus would step in for the departed Cornish in the 19-20 campaign. It seems he’s more of a scoring guard than a distributor, so maybe his game mirrors UC’s. 199 of his 276 shot attempts this past year from three.

Lamar Thornton was an assistant coach at Hargrave during Foreman's post grad year.

He's proven can produce at the D1 level. He'd be an excellent addition, but I suspect he's going to get plenty of offers.

Hope he choses Stony Brook!

Wow, this could be a huge get. He's the type of player who I think will thrive in the AE.

I think Coach Thornton was a big part of this get along with McKenzie.

Good PG play is crucial to our success. Hopefully, he can use his transfer year to get a feel for this team.

wish list- for the offseason(s), spend some time developing a vertical, that could make him even more versatile if he can grab some boards (and compete inside with 6'5'' guards).  maybe the left hand for layups too.  thanks for sharing!

I always liked Alonzo, and it used to drive me nuts watching him sit on the bench when Petrus was getting all the minutes. The little we saw of Alonzo, i thought was a better player then Petrus on both sides of the court. He just needed more playing time on the court.. Alonzo had a higher BB IQ then Petrus and was a much better defender...

I liked Campbell too.  Not a Petras in terms of bulk, but I thought he was good around the rim, and had that 10-12 foot jumper.  Wish him well; I believe he deserved more of a chance at SBU.

Alonzo was the worst player on the team at SB and it wasn’t even close. His stats at the very putrid level of college BB was horrendous.  At Paris, he was the 8th leading scorer on the team and 7th in rebounding.  Total interest by DI coaches should be 0!!!!   I’ll miss Petras driving you nuts!

Who's this??? The guy who only shows up 2 times a year and bashes other people opinions??? Please lax. Do everybody a favor and just stay on the sidelines.. If Alonzo was given more playing time he would've been a lot better player than Petras. It only took Petras 3 1/2 years to finally come around and do something on the floor besides acting like a clown. Petras was a disaster on defense and was horrible on offense. When a 5'11 shooting guard out rebounds someone who is a hair shy of 7', you suck.  Alonzo was a good defender and had potential on offensive, given a chance.

Not related to SBU, but Buffalo is in the midst of probably their best year as an athletic department ever. Football won 10 games this year, and now basketball is ranked in the top 15 and is about to tip off against Syracuse  in 15 minutes. Should be a good game. I'll be watching. Hopefully SBU can go on enough of a run over the next couple years to get ranked at some point. Would be huge for the program. We were receiving a ton of votes during Warney's senior year.

Buffalo in the MAC conference for BB? I believe so, hence the rankings. SB is in the AE. No team will ever get an AP ranking regardless if they go 32-0 for the season.

Furman is ranked right now and they have two division 2 wins. Though they do have a good win over Villanova, but not much else. I have little doubt had we won the Holy Cross and Brown games, we'd be one of the first 2-3 teams just outside the top 25 if not ranked. Damn NJIT is receiving a vote in the AP. If we were 12-0 right now we'd be ranked. We'd certainly be ranked if we beat Hofstra tomorrow and were otherwise undefeated. They're a borderline top 100 team based one some of the metrics I've been seeing.

Good win for UB. For some reason, subconsciously, I was rooting for them during the game!

yep.  some of them are more balanced than others.  but i chalk it up to the age of the internet- analysis, followed by over-analysis, followed by more.  it passes the time.

also- the anonymity doesnt exactly help the situation.

but in any event- the aspect i am most proud of his how our fans do carry themselves on these boards- always with class.  can't say the same for certain others.

RealtimeRPI has SBU at #103 in RPI right now, and that doesn't include Saturday's victory over Quinnipiac. Funny enough. Holy Cross is only a couple spots above us at #101. Feels nice to be a borderline top 100 team!!

Our current best victory is over #80 Rhode Island, and funny enough, right behind them is #81 Vermont for what it's worth  ;D

11-3 is better than I ever could have hoped for from this team coming into the year. I'm excited for conference play. Not to gloat, but the bottom half of the conference looks worse than usual. Obviously we'll have to handle Vermont, and probably UML, UMBC, and Hartford, but I like our chances of going on a run this year.

Stony Brook: The Seawolves still need to win the America East to get a bid, but Stony Brook has wins at Northern Iowa, South Carolina, Rhode Island and GW. It may not scare anyone, but Stony Brook won’t be fazed in a first round. Oh, and Stony Brook shouldn’t be a 16 if it gets in with its non-conference record of 12-3.

Still way too early and we still must it all in March .  I would think we might get a 15 seed if we win it all but not much higher. The AE is what it is even if we win  13 or 14 conference games still a stretch .

that and it also depends on the following- how does GW, URI, USC, and UNI (and the rest of our schedule) finish up.  we seem to have a reverse-midas effect, where teams skid after we beat them- in all sports.

The AE champ is usually a 13 or 14. I predicted the UMBC upset because they were under seeded as the AE champ and UVA didn't have the kind of typical overwhelming talent you'd see out of your typical 1 seed like a Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, etc. SBU was a 13 seed last year.

If we don't lose another game the entire rest of the year until the NCAA tournament, I'd say we get an 11 or 12 seed.

SBU is currently #51 in the RPI. Just one spot away from being a top 50 team in an important metric!!

http://realtimerpi.com/ncaab/college_Men_basketball_power_rankings_Full.html

Notably, we're currently ahead of UCLA, Vermont, Hofstra, Furman, and other notable teams this year. This is likely to change by the time we play our next game, but I'll take it!!

Is RPI going to be a consideration this year? I thought NCAA updated to new NET rankings.

https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d1/ncaa-mens-basketball-net-rankings

Where our ranking is 132 and Vermont 86.

Other teams of interest:

GWU 279
South Carolina 133
Rhody 130
(L) Hofstra 56
Delaware 184

As season progresses, this ranking seems to be settling down after initial craziness.

Far and away our best one. They took down ranked Mississippi State last week, and with Kentucky being somewhat down they've got a chance to go on a run in the SEC. I'm probably underrating Tennessee since they aren't a traditional power, but yeah.

Power rankings? RPI has us at 66.

The South Carolina win is enormous for our metrics. They have one game against teams outside the top 100 RPI the rest of the way. A little help here, GW?

We can scrutinize all of it though, and it still comes down to a week in March.

We are all the way at the bottom  :'(

I used to so obsessed with RPI and bracketology...still check all these rankings regularly.

But all those heartbreaking AE tournament losses prior to finally getting over the hump in 2016 taught me that three AE tourney games in early March is all that matters in one bid league. The team we have now is capable of winning it all. I see Vermont and us in the final. Hope we can get the home court.

Winning the AEC tournament is of course paramount but getting a crappy 15 or 16 seed virtually guarantees a smack down in the big tourney. (Ignore what UMBC did...it won’t happen again anytime soon.)

UMBC as a 16 was an outlier though I believe. They were clearly under-seeded as the AE champ is usually a 13 or a 14.

That game is the gift that keeps on giving!! Had Rhode Island been their usual ranked/competitive self, and we didn't lose the Hofstra game, I'd almost say we have an at-large worthy resume. Carolina will be ranked eventually if they keep this up.
