Stony Brook's Omaha momentum

A couple of days after Stony Brook returned from its trip to the 2012 College World Series, recruiting coordinator Joe Pennucci headed out with something a little better to sell.

He told recruits about a good baseball program and quality school, of course, and he spoke about past NCAA regional appearances. The Seawolves are proud of those seasons. But now, they're not Pennucci's only bullet. Now he can ask someone, "Do you want to know what it's like in Omaha?"

"Being in Omaha is the best recruiting tool you can have," Pennucci says. "It opens up the eyes of those who in the past may never have heard of Stony Brook or thought of it as a legit place to play or go to school."

This is the true value of Stony Brook's 2012 season. Can Pennucci, who was promoted to associate head coach in August, and the Stony Brook staff parlay one College World Series trip into multiple years of recruiting success? Will the recognition and exposure allow the Seawolves to attract a higher-profile recruit that might not have been interested before?

"I'm a firm believer in trusting your eyes," Pennucci told me. "If I was too worried about the high-profile guys, we wouldn't have gotten [2012 first-round pick Travis] Jankowski. But yes, more high-profile recruits probably return a call or show more interest than they would have before Omaha."

There are still inherent challenges at Stony Brook. It has to sell the America East conference and a cold corner of the Northeast. But Pennucci has proved that he can lure players from all over the country -- Stony Brook has four freshmen from California on the 2013 roster -- and that gives the Seawolves hope.

I am really looking forward to the new season. The trip to the cws was a great exposer for SBU...should help with recruiting. I hope we play some OOC games against NY area teams like Hofstra, St. Johns, Manhattan, Seton Hall (NJ.. I know!), etc.

Just checked that our baseball 2013 schedule is out on Seawolves homepage. We are playing 1 at St. Johns and 1 at Manhattan. I am sure with more success, we would play good NY teams more. We also start with 3 games at FIU and 3 at North Carolina.. both very good teams.

What are your guys expectations for the baseball team this season? Lost a lot of talent, but also return guys like McNitt, Vanderka, Krause, Peragine, Goldstein and brought in probably the best class in recent America East history with 12th and 21st round draft picks.

Of course we would all be hoping for a similar run like last year... going to CWS. But realistically I am expecting Seawolves to win the AE regular season and AE tournament and at least reach the regional finals if not super final.

Thanks for the link joewille.. good read.

"1. How does a high school player from Southern California end up at Stony Brook?

I was looking for a school that had a strong balance between academics and athletics. I was attracted to Stony Brook's academics and specifically their excellent health sciences program because of my interest in becoming a doctor. From a baseball standpoint, I liked Stony Brook's winning tradition and the opportunity to earn impact innings as a freshman."

I guess SBU is going to be a very attractive destination to many new recruits who are also interested in quality education, in addition to proximity to NYC.

Our attention will be on men's hoops against Vermont, but it's the first weekend for the baseball team too. They play three games (first is Friday at 6PM) against Florida International, a team in the top-half of D1. Taking at least two of those games will bode well for the team after last year's shocking season.

Been reading the forum for a while, finally decided to join. As an alum, I'm thrilled about whats going on in all of our varsity sports. The baseball team has some great potential. I'm really excited to see the freshmen this year. McNitt and Vanderka will be a lot of fun to watch this season at the front of the rotation.

On a side note (and hoping I'm not stepping on too many toes), I recently started a website: What's a Seawolf?! (www.whatsaseawolf.com) to provide some more nuanced coverage of Stony Brook athletics. I just posted a two part preview of the Stony Brook baseball team... well Part II will be up later today but you can read about the pitchers (http://whatsaseawolf.com/index.php/2013/02/2013-seawolves-baseball-preview-part-i-pitchers/) at least for now!

Rough day today, but Vanderka was really solid. Mason had a rough game today. Good signs are that Peragine looks like he hasn't missed a beat from last year. Love seeing all the young talent on the diamond this year. I'm intrigued to see Zamora pitch tomorrow- I have high hopes for him. The America East better try to dethrone us this year- they won't have much luck in the next couple of years with all of this talent.

By the way, I finally finished up my preview of the positional players- you can read it here http://whatsaseawolf.com/index.php/2013/02/2013-stony-brook-baseball-preview-part-ii-hitters/

Now I can say with certainty that I know the ins and outs of the baseball team. These previews are also for me- its a quick and dirty for me to get to know the players on the squad. Hope you enjoy.

Funny thing is, I'm currently out of state but moving back to Long Island in a few months. Looks like I'll have to purchase season tickets to make sure I have seats at basketball games! I remember when I could walk into a Seawolves game 5 minutes before game time and grab a seat at courtside. It's really amazing what Stony Brook has done in the last few years. I'm so proud to be a Seawolf!

FYI- I changed my name (the three letter combo seemed really weird in retrospect!)

Not the best start for the boys of summer...outscored 13-4 over the first two games. Hopefully no sweep today. I guess we've been spoiled having a CWS team; anything less than another very good  season (in- AND out-of-conference) will be a disappointment.

relax guys. No worries. Remember that we are a northeast team. We start clicking after conference season starts. all these teams in the south get  a head start because they can practice all year round. Consider this our pre season matchups. By April we will be rocking!

Post by: ry1nik on February 18, 2013, 01:59:32 pm
Yeah, and I saw some other ranked teams (including CWS Kent State) go winless too, so it probably has to do with not getting enough practice at-bats in three feet of snow. That being said, they need to at least avoid another sweep at North Carolina this weekend....regardless of the Tar Heels being ranked #1.

For those at the games in Miami, some have a different prospective than just reading the box scores. The team will be fine once they get into conference play. Due to weather conditions and lack of practice outside on their field, the defensive fielding made it difficult to win. I think the coaches need to figure out who to play in a few positions that would help the defense be more productive for the pitching staff. They lost game three on a run scored because a pop up that falls in the field that should have been caught, combined with a running error that caused a run for the team. The Seawolves should have won 2of3 on the weekend if better defense was played, there was 5-6 plays that should have been errors instead of home cooking hits. People figure thats why so many teams that play home games so much tend to have higher averages. The pitching staff is going to surprise many people this season even with them being young overall. Hitting will be the team struggle, with defense if the staff can't figure who best fits that position for fewer errors. This team will not score the runs of last years team, but with good pitching and defense when more games than some people think. This weekend in Chapel hill count on rain to alter the schedule. I predict a double header on sunday, with all three starters pitching(one in a relief role). That way all the get the work needed to build their arms for the season. Good luck Seawolves, and will give my opinion after the games on what is observed.

Post by: ecasadoSBU on February 24, 2013, 06:33:48 pm
Tough. But I'm still confident they will pick this up. Its february. Lets give them team some time to gel. I didn't expect a lot from them early in the season. but My hopes are still high that they can win the America East and head on to the NCAAs. I'll be worried if we not in first place in the AE by mid April. There's talent but we must recognize that we lost a ton of talent last year. These kids can only get better.

Lets go Seawolves

we lost 2-3...

Should we hit the panic button?

I personally don't think so. Let them play,  let them gel. I'm sure this team will compete for the America East Championship. That's what matters. Keep the same philosophy. I hope ya weren't hoping for an at-large resume into the NCAAs right after losing seven guys to the Minors...

Yes, we gotta get that first win sooner or later before the guys lose confidence, but it will come soon enough

Title: Re: 2013 Stony Brook Baseball season
Post by: ry1nik on March 02, 2013, 03:35:20 pm
If the only goal is to make it to the NCAAs, not yet time to worry. If the goal is to have a great team like we had last year...then yes, time to worry. SBU had 10 losses for the entire regular season last year. We already have 8. Once you date a supermodel (no, can't say that I have), then having even a pretty girlfriend afterwards can be disappointing. Once you are one of the top college baseball teams in the country, then settling for winning one of the weakest conferences is also not quite the same....but it's probably all we can hope for during a "rebuilding" year.
Title: Re: 2013 Stony Brook Baseball season
Post by: ecasadoSBU on March 03, 2013, 01:30:03 am
I think the goal is to win the conference regular season, win the AE tourney, get to the NCAA and shoot for a regional championship which would be a superb rebuilding season. I don't expect this team to go to past the Super Regional with the amount of talent lost last year. Before the season I did but most likely out of ignorance or fan bias. But after realizing that we lost a ton of talent and that Coach wouldn't have enough time to take advantage of that magical run for recruiting purposes you start to realize that it is unfair to expect so much out of a young team.

I also think we can't be too judgmental of a team that is playing a tough schedule and has been all around the South without having played a single game at home. Its tough to build confidence when your are flying out 1000+ miles away playing ball. Its also tough when you have to play talented teams early in the season like a #1 UNC. Its just too early to hit the panic button.

The chances of getting an at-large in this conference on any given year are quite small so our path is the same. Win the AE and make it to the NCAA. Remember, last year's team went all the way to the World Series and their RPI was in the 60s not good enough to receive an at-large even after beating Miami, LSU, UCF, and Missou St....
Title: Re: 2013 Stony Brook Baseball season
Post by: ry1nik on March 04, 2013, 07:46:01 am
The team dropped another and now sit at 0-9. The rest of the AE must be thinking that the conference is now wide open and SBU no longer has a lock on NCAA bid; I think they're right. The only good news to come out of the season so far is that the freshmen have been performing better than the upperclassmen. This bodes well for the future.

Don't jump off the ledge just yet guys! The teams down south are in better playing shape early in the year. As the weather warms up back home, the Seawolves will play closer to form. Regardless, this is a massive rebuild this year. The bullpen has been really shaky and the offense needs to get it going. It's not like SBU lost ALL of its talent- Goldstein, Krause, and Peragine were very good last year too.

Here's a quick summary of the first ten games of the season (http://tinyurl.com/bsxfb8u)

Post by: ry1nik on March 07, 2013, 07:06:47 pm
Good write up......thanks. But for comparison purposes, they didn't lose 15 games last season. They lost only 10 (don't count the playoffs). If they lose just one more game for the rest of the regular season they'll be on track! I'm being facetious of course. I think if they just make it to the NCAAs this year it will be a success (Binghamton is looking pretty good this year). Next year we can hope for more again.

No panic button yet. Hold on tight guys. Lets go Seawolves. 6-12 for the year. This won't be the record breaking season we had last year. But we have two months to improve and be good enough to make it to the NCAA. I believe in Seawolves baseball. Senk will figure it out!

That St Johns game  was a real downer. What great ptiching dual only to fall apart in the 12th. Last year  we win  that game going away.  UMBC is up next and they are usually weak so hopefully we pick up some wins this weekend.  Coach  Senk must be aging with every inning this year.

Oh come now - SBU is doing fine. A quick look at their box scores tells the story: SBU's starters are phenomenal, but the reliever corps is still an issue. They do fine until the 8th/9th inning, when they have to put in a reliever. St. John's is a perfect example of a game where we went too deep because of the longer game.

SBU was able to hit itself to wins last season - this one we have some great producers (ie Parenty and Caputo, amongst others), but not the concentrated hitting machine SBU was last season.

We'll be FINE - the team is very, very young - and missing a phenomenal catcher/hitter in Krause. We'll be competitive in the AEC this season, but next season I anticipate another 30+ win machine.

I've been reading this blog and comments for the past couple weeks, it's time for me to sound off. I've seen 10-15 games so far this year and this team is doing worse than even I had predicted. I also believe that there is more talent than the record states on this team, but still as before think it's being misused. The stats should be read first before anybody makes comments on this blog, just for having a better understanding of some of the problems. We don't hit cutoff men from the outfield with great regularity, which lead to extra bases and runs. Numerous errors that aren't even counted as such because away teams want to up their players averages. I must say this is the worst team in SBU Div1 history based on numbers, but doesn't need to be based on roster. Even big league teams move or sit players when things aren't working. Why doesn't Senk make major changes due to lack of success. Shake things up and play some others, including changing some positions around. What makes him think that things will change if he keeps things the same. Can't believe the AD and administration is happy with results just as a great following was growing. What a wasted chance to snowball enthusiasm for this program, and the other sports at SBU. If the team doesn't win 5 of the next 6 conference games, their chance of playoffs will be almost impossible. Change now or throw this year and maybe more in the future away on lack of true effort to change approach. Would like to hear other opinions of what others have witnessed at games. Also looking forward to hear what is said on the radio sports show from school sunday at 10p.m. P.S. I'm a frusturated FAN! >:(

It is shocking how much they've fallen off from last season. Sure, they lost top players to the draft, but so did other schools. Kent State was another Stony Brook-- northern mid-major without a baseball tradition. Kent's RPI a/o today is 86. Stony Brook--246 (out of 298). Of course they're missing Krause. How can Goldstein go from  .300+ BA one season to sub .200 the next? Oh there is no joy in Wolfieville. They have some talented freshmen, so I'm optimistic for next season.

RY1, what are you watching? The freshman haven't been any better than rest of team. Just as many errors and mental mistakes. As for Goldstein, I'm no fan of his play. I wish instead of just saying those kids will be good in future, tell me why. I will say Caputo and Parenta have played well, even though Jack is an infielder(where he belongs).

I'm disappointed also but I honestly think we still have a shot (its the AE guys: I only fear Maine and Binghamton). There is just so much ball to play from here to May 22nd. I think a 5-6 winning streak would serve us well to build the confidence on this team. Being swept by Albany is no fun (and even a bit of embarrassment considering UA has never been good on Baseball) but its time to move on. Iona on tuesday and then returning home.

I remain hopeful. Lets go SBU!!!

The boys split today, not what we needed to make a move in the standings. Really need to win 2 of 3 for the rest of conference games. Hoping the team can find a way to make that happen. I like some of the changes the coaches have made to lineup, but I think it might've been to late into conference play. The defense and energy was noticeably better today. Looking forward to tomorrows game, which by the way is having a video feed online. Go Seawolves!

Big win today! They need to keep winning 2-3 and they will be tough in tournament if the climb in. To all the hartford clan, just classless. Who teaches their kids to be so crappy on the field, getting into players faces and cursing. Great human beings you guys are raising, enjoy it when they wind up losers. Keep at it seawolves, and do it with class. When this team went to LSU and Omaha, people liked them because they knew how to act. Hartford wouldn't know how to behave if they got lucky and had the chance to experience regionals and beyond.

C'mon Ry1nik, don't be so hard in our team. I know they are struggling. But lets just be happy the won a series. They needed this one badly. They are facing @Maine, and @Binghamton which will be tough. But not all hope is loss. It ain't over till is over. Coach Senk has been here for long and I won't give up on him for the rest of the year. He can figure it out and get us to the AE tourney... and then as we all know: The AE tourney is whole different animal and no one is has that locked for sure.

What amazes me is the drop from last year. They finished with an RPI of 55 in 2012.  Before yesterday's two losses, they were at 255 (of 298 teams). That's mind boggling. It may be the biggest drop in all major college sports this season.  For comparison purposes, Kent State is doing fine with RPI of 80.

We had to shut them out just to get a win. I wonder how many more shut-outs will get throughout the season...

We have qualified for the America East Tourney every year except for 2005 (which was a follow-up season to the 2004 NCAA team)... Not making it to the AE tourney would be depressing and as of now we are 7-11, closest team is Binghamton at 8-8... :/

Our boys had a nice scrimmage today. Negron once again looks to be the better Q...... Will Tye is going to be a blast to watch this year on the TE position, also # 88, I know he is a transfer but I dont know his name but looks really good... I think we will see a lot more action out of out TE position this year, obviously with Will Tye..  James kenner, RB, had a real nice outing...... On defense, wow!!! what could I say!! That front line looks big and strong, Can't wait to see how well they do in the spring game.. I was talking to Essington again and he said Lyle Negron has a canon for a arm and he did display that on one occasion ..  # 5 Malcom, I hear will be our starting WR, had a terrible day, way too many drops.. I really hope he gets better in a hurry but so far I think he's horrible...

Interesting to see all the fans have given up. The team is playing better, yet still struggling at plate. I'm going to make a prediction that this team sneaks into playoffs. No other team in the conference wants us to get in, even the maine coach said that on their post game show on sunday. Today they play at central conn, at this point the midweek games aren't really important. The extra wins wont help us get into post season play, so just focus on conference game wins. Next couple weekend are real important at this point, but if we get in conference tournament watch out.

Big win today to keep the boys in a dogfight for conference tournament. If they can sweep at UMBC it would be great. They are playing much better as a team, and overall the pitching is better. At times certain guys will have a bad outing but that to be expected in baseball. I still feel for some reason they will get in, and do some damage in the tourney. Of course if they win the conference tournament and make the NCAAs, all is forgiven for the very disappointing regular season. But even if they fall in the tournament (assuming they make it), hopefully they finish conference play with a winning in-conference record. Moral victories don't count, but avoiding a losing season in a weak conference is a good thing.

Hey ya'll...I'm back after a long delay (real life got in the way). Wrote a brief recap of the 2013 season. I'm pretty optimistic about next year as there were only 2 seniors on this team. Injuries killed us this year.

What's a Seawolve, do you really know what's going on. Goldstein didn't get hurt, he quit due to other issues which I wont discuss on a blog. Also to say that they will for sure be better next year, thats a assumption I'm not willing to make. I do think they can't get much worse, but other issues might be happening that's not known to you or others. I'll I say is keep your eyes and ears open. This off season is going to more interesting than most expect, unless I'm way of base. I do hope for a much better year in 2014, but wont say for sure till next jan when i can take a look at the team. Go Seawolves!

SBUFANBB, thanks for the feedback. I'm unfortunately not on Long Island right now and most of what I write is simply based on stats and scouting reports, its essentially all second-hand stuff. Your sources definitely are far more legitimate since most of my stuff is based on simple analysis of stats. As I said elsewhere, my ears will be a lot closer to the ground with me moving back to Stony Brook soon but right now, don't expect anything groundbreaking out of me.

What disappoints me about the team is that during a "reloading" year, they couldn't at least pull off a respectable season. Kent State is a good team for comparison. I'm sure KSU had some good seniors who graduated after their World Series run, yet they had a very good season this year (88 RPI vs. 218 for SB). When our "reloading" season isn't necessarily a bad season, then the program will have arrived.

I agree ry1nik. For most of the season i expected atleast a good record with a trip to the ncaas after such a great year last year. Indeed a disappointment and last years run may probably be forgotten before we know it. Many considered a fluke to begin with...

I'm hoping to see significant improvement in 2014.  Our freshmen will have a years experience, hopefully a strong recruiting class and the upper classmen step up. The team this year under performed and I didn't expect another trip to Omaha but a conference title  with a Regional would have been  nice. Just to show we were legit last year.

Last year's team was a really special group. Just look at their stats- top to bottom, there was not an easy out in that lineup. They NEVER struck out and both Jankowski and Carmona hit near or above .400 on the year. It's pretty absurd looking back at last year's team actually when you look at their stats.

Pitching was strong for sure but that offense was just a unique group. When you consider that several of the cornerstones of that team (Carmona, Cantwell) were Long Island products, its not impossible that we gather that talent level again. I wouldn't consider that team a fluke by any means- those guys were legitimate ballplayers that somehow all ended up at Stony Brook ;).

I hope we see at least one  if not two long ball hitters in the next class. We were anemic in  that  department this year. A couple players with double digit  home run tallies would be nice.

LSU is back in the College World Series for the first time since 2009 with a 57-9 record. Impressive team. They beat up on Oklahoma pretty badly. Indiana is giving the Big Ten some hope beating up on Florida State. They are close to winning the second game and clinching a CWS berth. It has been a good Baseball postseason so far. I'm really starting to get hooked on NCAA Baseball tourney.

No SBU players drafted this year in the MLB draft.   There will be at least three drafted next year.

Can we afford to lose 3 more ?   I hope they make it  but that puts dent  in our line up again. Really hope our new  recruiting class  is loaded.

LSU against UCLA. What a great game that was. I wanted LSU to win but they came a bit short. It seems like UNC may disqualify them this time around with a 3-0 lead...

I think we will find our way back to the CWS sooner rather than later .  Lets put this season behind us , the talent  is  still finding its way to SBU .

Stony Brook has to continue doing what it has been doing. Getting the kids that get little attention in the national scene but that can develop and play great. If we start targeting high-major recruits I'm afraid we wont succeed because those players will continue to go South and will overlook SBU.

I'm positive SBU baseball will continue to be at least a Northeast power for years to come and we'll get back in the NCAAs soon enough

Our Seawolves will represent well  in the summer leagues this year.  I hope to see improvement come February  especially  from our guys who played in the Cape Cod League.

Here's more reason for optimism. During summer 2011, SB sent six players to the Cape Cod summer league, which is the top collegiate summer league in the nation. Only five other schools sent more that year, and we all know that the following season turned into a great one for the team. This summer, SB also sent six players to Cape Cod. It will be interesting to see if those six will propel the team to another championship and post-season for 2014.

Title: What Went Wrong in 2013?
Post by: sbufan on August 01, 2013, 08:53:30 pm
I want to get your guys opinions on what went wrong this past season. I know they lost a of good talent from the 2012 team to the mlb, but I still think a team batting average of .240 is unacceptable. Any thoughts guys?

Despite making the CWS last year, the program still hasn't "arrived" as a major powerhouse. When SB's rebuilding years are decent years instead of bad years (this year was a bad year), then SB will have a baseball program commensurate with a top notch public university of 25K+ students. That being said, there's no doubt in my mind that this team will be playing in the AE Championship game next year.

For me I think it was two factors.  We lost a ton of talent  and it was replaced by a  alot  of young talent straight out of high school.   Lack of experience on any team is a big factor even if the talent level is there. Secondly  we lost a few  leaders both in the clubhouse and on the field  for the new guys to look  up to  and take a little   peer coaching.   Any team needs that chemistry and it wasn't quite there in 2013.  We will be fine going forward.  Our guys are doing well in their summer leagues and they have a year under their belts as freshmen.  We will  get back to Omaha !
