UNC Grants Nicky Galasso a Release; To Transfer for Spring
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -University of North Carolina junior attackman Nicky Galasso (West Islip, N.Y.) has been granted a release to explore transfer options effective immediately, UNC head men's lacrosse coach Joe Breschi announced Tuesday.

Galasso has indicated he plans to complete the fall semester academically at UNC before transferring for the spring semester to another NCAA Division I lacrosse program.

"Obviously, it's disappointing to have a young man like Nicky leave our program. We appreciate all that he has brought to Carolina lacrosse over the past two years and we wish him the best of luck both academically and athletically at his new school. Nicky leaves here in great academic standing and we're proud of the way he achieved in the classroom at UNC," said Breschi.

As a freshman in 2011, Galasso was the ACC Freshman of the Year, just the fourth in UNC history, and a third-team USILA All-America atattack. He led UNC in scoring with 56 points that season including 24 goals and a UNC freshman record 32 assists.

After breaking his foot in November 2011, Galasso returned to the Tar Heels in February 2012 but was never at full strength during the course of the season. He saw action last year in a reserve role and as an extra-man specialist as junior Marcus Holman and freshmen Jimmy Bitter and Joey Sankey played the starting roles on the attack unit. All three of those players return to the Carolina lineup this season. Galasso had six goals and three assists for nine points while playing in 13 games last season.

This was the worst kept secret in the country. His family pushed for a redsirt last year after he was injured, and when he did not get it and was rushed on the field for a secondary role everybody knew this was coming. If Stony Brook is able to land him it will be the biggest piece to the puzzle. This guy is known all over the country and his talent level is just as big as his name. If I were a betting man I'd say he comes to the Brook.

Wow does anyone have anything though that is more than just conjecture?  I mean, of course SB would be a fit on many levels- departed attackmen, lots of $$$ (not sure how much is tied up though), hometown, instant contributor, academic fit, play in front of the family, etc.  But a player of his caliber would have to get looks from other places i would think.

Anyone hear anything???

Well, lets wait and see.  But uncorroborated early reports on LP say Hofstra:

Just speculating but like you said everything fits. Two of his high school buddies just left Hofstra, not happy with the coach, so you would think he would not go there. We can only hope that he sees the recent success of others after they transfer and come to Stony Brook. I think Hofstra has lost alot of sizzle on the island and kids see that the Brook is the place to be.
Title: Re: Lacrosse News
Post by: joewillie on October 09, 2012, 02:42:57 pm
Nagle has to keep this kid in the 631...

Hofstra has always been the school that was rumored but if he wants to stay home he should really look at what the  Brook has to offer.   Hofstra is a dump.
Title: Re: Lacrosse News
Post by: Chrissy D. on October 09, 2012, 02:48:46 pm
Hofstra is like old soda pop, it's lost it's fizz. Stadium is a dump. If he wants to stay home and win it should be easy for him to choose SB. I am no longer  concerned with Hofstra stealing recruits. We have passed them in every aspect of our sports program. He could be the next in line of local legends ( Jackolski, Maysonette ) to put a stamp on there career at SB.

the more i think about it I bet he ends up at the Cuse...just my gut feeling though....
Title: Re: Lacrosse News
Post by: Chairman of the Board on October 09, 2012, 02:58:16 pm
Me too, he seems like a Cuse guy.

Also something to keep in mind- we are SB.  We dont need to pick up problem transfers (not that he is) or headcases.  Coach is doing very well on the recruiting circuit and he is recruiting a particular type of player for each position in his system.  Heck, these kids might even end up better than Galasso.  I can think of a few SB alums recently who have, so why not?

What im saying is, we arent your big brother's SB, where 10 years ago we needed this kid and were willing to overlook whatever- grades, egos, injuries, etc.  Were good enough now.  With that said, with so many attackers graduating, i'd take him.  8)
Title: Re: Lacrosse News
Post by: Chrissy D. on October 09, 2012, 03:13:58 pm
They took a chance on Brady with a checkered past and that worked out. Football takes chances all the time with players who had trouble at their old schools and we have seen the results. This was an issue of an injury and a redshirt that wasn't given. If you look at the NC board those guys are not happy with the way Breschi is running the team. College kids do things, party etc. If you closed the door on all those players you would never field a team. They all underage drink and do other things. From the press release Breschi said academics were not an issue. If you want to speculate that Gallasso might go to the Cuse ( witch I think would be a good fit as well for him ) fine. But let's not say that he would not make a huge difference at SB. He is a local legend and with that comes followers, kids that have watched him when they were little, see him at SB and may want to come. I have alot of respect for the guys that write on this board but lets not put college kids who party on the same line as kids who commit crimes.

Lots more chatter on the Laxpower threads for both Hof and UNC.  All speculation.

However, i have to question this- he likely had a half or better scholarship at UNC.  Lets assume places like Hofstra have scholarships tied up for the next few years already, so its difficult to get substantial $$$ over to a junior with a busted foot mid year.  That just makes places like Hofstra that much more expensive; and im assuming places like lets say GT or Princeton dont take transfers (that might have academic issues, no less).

Then again, all it takes is a scholarship kid out the door to free up the money to bring one in.  And from what im reading, that is exactly whats happening at Hofstra.
Title: Re: Lacrosse News
Post by: sbufan on October 09, 2012, 05:35:33 pm
It's hard to beat Stony Brook's price tag even without a scholarship here. That's definitely one thing in Stony Brook's favor.
Title: Re: Lacrosse News
Post by: Chairman of the Board on October 09, 2012, 05:44:45 pm
Yeah thats what im getting after- even as compared to most lacrosse schools- the Patriot, the whole Ivy league, etc.  Just to name a few.  Both leagues are expensive and hard to get in.  Laxpower now says he is transferring for the spring.  Count out transferring within the ACC (sit out).

There's also some schools that academically just wont take kids, or wont take kids that have the slightest academic issues.  Im thinking Ivy schools, ND, the military academies, etc.

I guess a good fit could be places like UMass, PSU, OSU, Cuse, etc.  What about Delaware or Denver???

Here he could come home and play for the family and get a good education, for a low price.

Galasso: 'Want to See Where I Can Make Impact'

http://laxmagazine.com/college_men/DI/2012-13/news/100912_galasso_want_to_see_where_I_can_make_impact

....Galasso said he has a list of potential landing spots in mind but didn't want to delve into specifics.  "I have to keep my options open and see what people have to offer, see where I can make an impact, and see where I'll fit in the most," he said.

...Galasso did offer an opinion on Hofstra, a program already speculated by some as Galasso's destination since the school is located 20 minutes from his hometown of West Islip, N.Y., on Long Island.  "Hofstra is a great program, but I think it might be too close to home," he said. "I'm thinking maybe elsewhere, try to get a little bit away and still have that college experience."

That doesn' bode well for the Brook either...it's going to be a team close to home but just how close.

Maybe one of the  the local Big  East schools ?   St Johns,  Rutgers.

Ummmm HOW is West Islip 20 min from the University of Uniondale???

With traffic, its closer to an HOUR and 20 min.  And if you can count on one thing on Long Island, its traffic.   :(

Obviously im kidding.  But really its like 30 miles away.  Thats at least 45 minutes, ive done this drive many times.
Title: Re: Lacrosse News
Post by: Chrissy D. on October 10, 2012, 12:29:34 am
The article said if Galasso goes to a team that is on NC schedule this year he would have to sit out a year as per release agreement. That is going to eliminate alot of schools. I believe Stony Brook is the spot, if you read between the lines, not too far from home. I 'll go out on a limb and say he comes here.
Title: Re: Lacrosse News
Post by: Chairman of the Board on October 10, 2012, 08:53:18 am
Yeah but it also said he wants to be away.  And that UNC is too far.

To me, that means that he wants to be off Long Island but no more than 5-6 hours away.  The kind of driving where his dad and four brothers could get in the car in the morning, watch him play, and be home that night.  I would think, given all the above, that makes Delaware, UMass, Cuse, Rutgers, all viable options.

I would say PSU, but i think they are on the 2014 UNC schedule.  Who knows, maybe Nova, Albany, Drexel, or even Bryant can be in the mix.
Title: Re: Lacrosse News

Maybe one of the  the local Big  East schools ?   St Johns,  Rutgers.

I could see Rutgers or Cuse.  I would love for him to come to the Brook more than anyone but Rutgers has BCS facilities and Brecht is a great coach.   Cuse, well they are Cuse.

If he goes to the America East I would be shocked but it would be huge for the program.   Lehigh and UMass could be in the mix too.
Title: Re: Lacrosse News
Post by: Chrissy D. on October 10, 2012, 01:16:54 pm
If Cuse, Rutgers, Lehigh are on NC schedule this year then he has to sit out a year. I believe they played last year. It would help if the schedules were released then we could play detective and eliminate from there. Listen I am a homer but Stony Brook gives him a chance to make an immediate impact, and also a chance to enjoy college life and be close to home. He did not say he wanted off the island, he said Hofstra might be too close to home. All I am saying is the Brook is not out of the picture. If you guys believe in Nagel and his ability to sell the program and recuit ( witch so far he has done a real good job ) then it is quite possible that we land Gallasso.
Title: Re: Lacrosse News
Post by: Chrissy D. on October 10, 2012, 01:24:00 pm
Rule out Hofstra since they play NC this year. He wants to play this spring and that would mean he would sit this year.
Title: Re: Lacrosse News
Post by: Chairman of the Board on October 10, 2012, 01:26:42 pm
Rule out Hofstra because Galasso said he aint going to Hofstra.

Desko confirmed that he is talking to Galasso: http://blog.syracuse.com/sports/2012/10/desko_confirms_that_syracuse_i.html#incart_river_default

Again, i think that if Hof is too close to WI, then SB is also too close to WI...

If Cuse has the ok to bring him I can't see him picking The Brook over the Orange.   Just my opinion though

It would be such a great story if he played at Stony Brook but Nagel did just cut his boy Diggle...Ha
Title: Re: Lacrosse News
Post by: Chrissy D. on October 10, 2012, 03:43:15 pm
Yes I agree anyone would pick the cuse over the brook to play lacrosse, what I am saying is that it would not be a slam dunk for cuse due to the release agreement. That puts alot more schools in play like rutgers etc. What I do not get is the negative tone of this discussion. He would be a huge asset to the program and stranger things have happened, that's all I am saying.
Title: Re: Lacrosse News
Post by: Chairman of the Board on October 10, 2012, 04:35:41 pm
Oh of course it would be a positive for our team- with four attackmen departed!

I think the issue with Cuse is, when they join the ACC in 2014, and UNC is undoubtedly on the schedule, will that prevent Galasso from signing with Cuse?

Im doubtul, considering the statements Desko made... but with all that said, i am extremely happy with Rooney's progress, and the way Eastwood looked in the fall.  And weve got Schultz too.

I'm biased but I think Stony Brook has as good a chance as anyone. Nagle pulled a rabbit out of his hat when he landed Tundo last august. Hopefully he can do it again with Galasso.

UMass-Lowell Joining DI's America East, Adding Men's, Women's Lacrosse

UMass-Lowell is set to formally elevate its athletic department to Division I in a news conference Thursday morning. The River Hawks will join the America East conference, and will add men's and women's lacrosse to its slate of programs, according to Boston.com.

The school's website has a notice on its homepage that an 11 a.m. news conference will announce the move.

UMass-Lowell will move to DI in 2013-14 season, and the Boston Herald is reporting the men's and women's lacrosse teams will begin play in the 2014-15 academic year. The River Hawks are most known for their hockey program.

Growth at the men's Division I level has seen an uptick in the past two years: Michigan, High Point, Marquette, Monmouth, Furma, Boston University and Richmond have all announced the addition of men's lacrosse in the past two years. Presbyterian dropped Division I lacrosse last season. The 2013 season will be up to 63 teams with Marquette and High Point starting. After 2014, it will be 67 with with addition of Furman, Monmout, Boston University and Richmond. As it goes now, UMass-Lowell would be the 68th men's DI team.

Some of the Laxpower fan polls are starting to add SB as well.  Damn if we couldve just held that 4 goal lead at Marist... but then again, as ive said earlier, Marist is an improved squad.  Dont look to just the name.

They play Duke later this year, and, yes, Duke is so far beatable.

Not sure id give SB the votes right now over Brown, Bellarmine, and Albany, heck even QU just beat Brown who beat UMass who beat UNC.

And just to build off that- lets have a look at how the FR class has done:

Rogers/Eastwood/Schultz/Shaughnessy/Lucatuorto- starting
Hughes/Sichenzia/Rock/Monzo- contributing lots of minutes, a few total starts
McLean/Buron/Sbarglia- on the field already, albeit minor minutes
Curry- showed promise in a great goal against UVa, may be hurt

Remember Lindsay is a redshirt, and for some reason Berardis and White never made it to SB.

And our sophomore class is: Judge, Rooney, Andreassi, Harris.  The future is so bright its blinding.

It's never too early to start recruiting, so coach Nags might want to take a look at my nephew, who just started his 10th grade season down in Baltimore as a LSM. He has the grades, so Brook probably wouldn't have to waste an athletic scholarship on him.  He is looking at the Ivy league schools, but his father wouldn't mind saving a few bucks and he has family in the area ;D.  Check out his video below:

Fairfield Lacrosse to Join CAA for 2015 as Associate Member
Fairfield University announced today that the men's lacrosse program will join the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) as an associate member. The Stags will begin CAA competition in 2015 with the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University, the University of Massachusetts, St. Joseph's University, and Towson University.

"The landscape of Division I lacrosse has been evolving rapidly and we are pleased to be joining the CAA," said Fairfield Director of Athletics Eugene P. Doris. "The prospect of aligning with these like-minded institutions is a tremendous opportunity to have our lacrosse program compete at the highest national level."

"We are thrilled to announce the addition of Fairfield's men's lacrosse program to our league," said CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager. "The Stags have built a tradition of success on the field and in the classroom that will strengthen the caliber and character of our conference. We are excited for them to begin competition in 2015."

Fairfield completed its eighth season as a member of the ECAC Lacrosse League in 2013 and will compete with the Air Force Academy, Bellarmine University, Hobart College, the University of Michigan, and The Ohio State University in 2014. The Stags went 8-7 in 2013 and played in the ECAC Tournament for the third time in as many seasons.

"We are pleased to have found a new home with the CAA and for the opportunity to align ourselves with some fantastic institutions and lacrosse programs," said sixth year head coach Andy Copelan.

"The ECAC has provided us some tremendous experiences and we are thankful to have one final year in a conference that has meant an awful lot to us. At the end of the day, we are going from one challenging conference to another challenging conference that is a little easier on our travel budget. Seeing new rivalries emerge is healthy for college lacrosse and it is my hope that Fairfield can continue to do our part in making sure the CAA remains among the elite conferences in the country. Lastly, I would like to thank our Athletic Director, Gene Doris, for his efforts during these last couple weeks. It feels good to be able to say that we have a new home and to begin a new chapter of Fairfield lacrosse."

In each of the past two seasons the Stags have won 20 games, including a program-best 12-4 mark during the 2012 seasons. Fairfield has spent 16 weeks in the USILA National Poll the past two seasons, reaching as high as 13th in both seasons. In Copelan's five years at the helm, the Stags have won 43 games and have finishing .500 or better every seasons, the program's longest such stretch. Included in those victories is the program's first-ever win over a #1 ranked team, 10-9 in Denver this spring, and a win over then #3 Notre Dame, 10-8, in 2010.

This past season, the CAA sent a pair of squads in nationally ranked Penn State and league champion Towson to the 2013 NCAA Championship. The league has had multiple teams selected to the NCAA Championship in four of the last five seasons.

Former MVP Kevin Crowley, All-Star Tyler Fiorito and 11 other Major League Lacrosse players pledge to donate their brains to the Concussion Legacy Foundation

“I’m proud to participate in Concussion Awareness Week and make the pledge to donate my brain, and I encourage others to do the same so together we can accelerate research on sports concussions,” said Crowley, who was both the MLL MVP and All-Star Game MVP in 2013. “In addition, as a youth coach, I am excited to help spread positive educational messaging around concussion to ensure a better, safer experience for the next generation of lacrosse players.”

"I want people to recognize it is a major issue going on," he said. "When you think about it long term, you don't really know the impact, but my buddies, people close to them, someone committed suicide. If I can help this from happening, I'm more than happy to do that."

"It's something I had to think about, but you never really think about it at 27 years old. It seemed so out there. It's just one of those funny things, I was like, 'I guess I won't need it when I'm gone,'" Crowley said. "It's a serious issue, and I wanted to help anyway I could. Pledging my brain was a way I could do that. Hopefully the long-term impact can save lives down the road."

Just wondering if someone else has this same feeling as i do. I feel as if Joe Spalina is eyeing a move over to the SB boys Lacrosse. I am only saying this because I follow Joe on Twitter and he likes to follow the Mount Sinai boys Varsity Lax. He is showing a lot of interest in boys varsity lately. Maybe it is just me!!!!!

If Joe does make the improbable move over to the men's side i still see the chick Lax being a power house team. Kylie O'Miller would be a great HC for SB . She has a huge following and top HS girls would still want to play for her. It's a win win for SB...

KO must feel she has "unfinished business" at SB. Winning a championship as a HC is one way to finish it.

Very true. KO and Murphy are irreplaceable. It Might even  take a few more years for Spallina to develop that next crop of star players. But it certainly seems he is capable of doing so and will be fun to watch.

They are in good hands with TO and Ally Kennedy moving forward.  TO just needs to pull a Murphy and come back from a torn ACL in less than a year.  I wouldn’t count her or the team out.

Also I think if Joe goes anywhere it will be across the hall to the men’s team.   He has too much invested on LI to move IMO.  Family,Team 91, Lizards, etc
