Title: 2012 Preseason: News, Rumors, Polls, etc
Post by: sbufan on May 30, 2012, 11:00:52 am
We are 15th in the Any Given Saturday poll, 24th in the lindys preseason poll.

Bogus. The Seawolves finished in the Top 20 last year. With the addition of Coker and a few other top transfers, and the return of key players, even 15th is suspect. But 24th is just plain whack.

We played under the radar last season and will probably do that again this  season.  Since Liberty hasn't even gotten a mention yet  Im sure we will be  fine.

Id love to get upset about this, but polls are polls.  I think they count more in 1A, but really, since we have the conference to win and the tourney to play, i think they polls are only counted as far as the seedings may go for the tournament.  And im not even sure they factor it in, and how much at that.

Post by: ecasadoSBU on May 30, 2012, 02:29:03 pm
At least we are ranked... Last year we weren't ranked in most pre-season polls (I remember Phil Steele was one of the few that ranked us 15) . These early pre-season ranks are not as legit. Lets wait for the August pre-season rankings which are close to the season and more popular...

This is going to be a great season. But we might have to win the Big South anyways to get into the NCAAs. Same drill all over again.

I think it's good that we're getting mentioned and people are aware of us. If we deserve to ranked higher, and I think we should be top 10, we'll prove it in the fall.

Preseason rankings are garbage, just look at last weekend w/Loyola in lax not ranked and won it all. I would rather win and move up then be ranked high and have everything you do held against you. Another lax reference but look what happened w/our 2011 team they were peseason 5 went 10-4 and no playoffs. As far as having to win conf. to get in, that's what you are supposed to do. Whenever you rely on pollsters and commitees to get in you almost always get screwed. At large bids do not get home games either. I will gladly take the low ranking and go w/the fact that our team is real good and they will do there talking on Saturday's. I would love to go to another home playoff game cause anyone who was there knows that it was off the hook at the Brook that day. They are building something special let it play out and in a couple yrs we will be talking about better things.

I suppose Coker wasn't on it because he didn't play at this level last year. For all practical purposes, add him to the first team (second team at least).

That is the only reason he didnt get a mention as an AA.  Hopefully he plays up to what he did last year in the Big 10  and we will win quite a few games !

The 2012 roster is up on goseawolves.org now. A couple things I noticed: Jevahn Cruz is no longer on the roster, Darell Hatcher isn't on the roster, Masengo Kabono is back on the roster.
Title: Re: 2012 Preseason: News, Rumors, Polls, etc
Post by: ry1nik on June 29, 2012, 07:19:57 am
Cruz may be redshirting, which would be great for both him and the program. Glad to hear about Kabono. I'm not sure what his issue was/is...with his size and Maryland pedigree, he should be tearing up offensive lines.

Cruz already redshirted in '10. Unless he got hurt but then you would have to apply for an additional redshirt year.

Looks like Cruz is gone they gave his #4 to the transfer Avery Graham.  Although you can have a double # in college as long as one is off. and one is on def.  Hatcher may not have made the grades and is headed to JUCO.  They have 17 freshman listed so I would think that they are all headed to camp. Most should get redshirted though. Also two incoming freshman have same # as upperclassman but both are on the same side of the ball so expect them to be redshirted ( D' Amato & Marino ).

No mentioning of Cruz being let go, and he was mentioned by a few SBU insiders as early as a few weeks ago. He could very well have injured himself. Not uncommon to get a 2nd redshirt, and a medical is nearly always granted.

Also - if I was Avery Graham - I get to pick my number. Even if Cruz was on the roster, Graham would still be wearing #4. Graham didn't do much at Maryland, but he was still a touted transfer.

I did see an interesting post  the other night not by one of our fans but some one in the AE.  SBU may pass on the CAA if invited ?  The reasoning  is we are  moving on  to bigger things in about 5 years and dont want to be stuck with a 1 milion dollar exit fee. Any substance  to this ?
Title: Re: 2012 Preseason: News, Rumors, Polls, etc
Post by: Redwyn on June 30, 2012, 10:17:18 am
There may be - but it wouldn't be about football. CAA Football is a distinct entity, and still maintains its original 250K exit fee. It would be a poor decision not to join up as at least a Football only member ASAP, as it seems the Big South's days backing football appear to be numbered.

Frankly I don't mind us pulling a Delaware or Gonzaga for a few years if it means more money, larger fan base, larger stadium, and ultimately an entry to a more financially profitable FBS conference (ie. NOT the MAC)
Title: Re: 2012 Preseason: News, Rumors, Polls, etc
Post by: Chrissy D. on June 30, 2012, 01:52:23 pm
They usually don't take you off the roster if you are hurt, they only do that if you are ineligible or you left school. My point about giving out his # to a transfer was that in college you can have double #'s as long as both play on opposite sides of the ball.  In this case they both could have worn the same number.  I heard the same things about Cruz from football alums close to program but you never know what the kid wants (more playing time).

ESPN they started covering college football again (yee ha), and focused on Army's football heritage and upcoming season. They showed Army's schedule and sure enough, there was "Stony Brook" along with the other big name schools. It was actually weird seeing the words "Stony Brook" up there with the big boys. Now to steal a win.

Looking over the roster, I noticed Devante Wheeler has been moved from cornerback to WR. Wheeler has been in the two deep at cb the last two seasons. I'm taking it as a good sign Priore moved him despite graduating two starters ahead of him. Have to think the redshirts and transfers are looking good.

Also Dan Mulrooney moved to LB which is a bit of head scratcher considering how effective he was last year at SS and how loaded we are at lb this year. Priore said in the spring Nakwaasah was moving to middle linebacker. I'm guessing Mulrooney is taking his place on the weakside. Greg Melendez seems like a strong candidate to take over the open starting safety position. Melendez hasn't gotten much attention but he is a proven transfer. He has started in every game he's dressed for and played in two of the best FCS conferences in the country.

It's unbelievable. Last year the team had enough depth to redshirt every freshman and junior college transfer. For 2012 they return something like 15 starters from last years nationally ranked team, added some of the most high profile FBS transfers in the country, and have 20+ redshirts looking to get on the field. I'm eager to 2012 media guide to know what the preseason depth chart looks like.

Our coaching staff has done an outstanding job building this program.   With our depth we have   a complete team that could  start anywhere  and they are redshirts.

Haven't seen any comment regarding Lindy's preseason poll. They ranked us #24. I found it pretty low considering we are basically an improved team over last year. But it doesn't really matter. 45 days till College Football. So excited. I'm looking for to attending just about every game this season.

SBUfan started the discussion about the preseason polls back in May. My comment from then has not changed: "Bogus. The Seawolves finished in the Top 20 last year. With the addition of Coker and a few other top transfers, and the return of key players, even 15th is suspect. But 24th is just plain whack."

As for Cruz's transfer, there are two ways of looking at it. It would of course have been nice to have a Hansen winner stay on the team...that's a no-brainer. But the fact that a team is so stacked that a HANSEN WINNER would be taking a back seat to two other running backs is quite a luxury for any FCS team to have.

We are loaded this season for sure and this years team  will be better than the 2011 team no doubt.  I dont mind playing under the radar  until the end of the season when we are back in the playoffs. Just look what baseball did .  We are easily better than 24th  and we will be much higher come November.

Agreed. Last season Army spanked Fordham badly, and I don't think they'll take the Seawolves too seriously when they travel to West Point. Especially true if SBU doesn't have a Top 10 ranking by that point.

I believe Fordham lost to a D2 program last year. They were terrible.  We can run and we certainly can pass against the Black Knights. I dont think thier  option run game is that great and they dont pass that much Liberty they are not.  If they overlook us for the following weeks  game they will be in hole rather quickly.

Saw the red/white scrimmage today at Sachem H.S. and they do have alot of weapons. First off the size of some of these guys is impressive, Coker is a big dude. I saw Coxsen catch a short pass and turn it in to a long gain with his speed. Essington and Negron looked sharp. Dudley, Franklin, and Mulrooney are big hitting LB's and watch out for Hauter on the DL, soph from William Floyd. Myles Campbell looks like he's ready to contribute at WR. Also Soph RB Davon Lawrence broke a long TD run on the first play from scrimmage, he has break away speed and could step in if needed. Was legit in High school. The cubbard appears to be full.

I think this FB season has the potential to be as exciting as baseball was. SW97, I think the worst case is more like 8-3. We play Liberty in Lynchburg this year, and the Flames could steal a win on their home turf. Of course Army and Syracuse (especially) are a toss up. Best case I see a 10-1 season. Time will tell, but I think a post-season appearance is almost guaranteed.

I heard the Honey Badger wants to stay at LSU this year, get his act together and than come back and play next season.  Who really knows though.

I don't know if smoking marihuana makes you a thug... despite being illegal. But he definitely needs to stay off it if he wants to return to LSU

Considering all those stadiums host BCS powerhouses I think we did pretty good. Remember those stadiums probably all seat 65,000 plus fans at least , some in the 80K to 100k range.  That is good news.  Now if someday our football team could be 22 on that list , well that would be a trip.

I was at the scrimmage yesterday. They only gave Maysonet and Coker a couple carries which I agree with, but nonetheless was a little disappointed about. Gush, Norrell, and Coxson will be exciting. Each had some nice plays yesterday. True freshman fb Chris Makulik caught my eye. He had a good share of reps with the first team and had one really impressive pancake block. He may be looking at some early playing time this season. Physically Bamiro looks ready for a breakout season. I didn't really watch him during the game and even if I did I don't have the background to give a good synopsis of his performance, but standing around he looks way stronger than he did last year.

Maysonet and Coker will save their fireworks  for  the regular season. Another  year with two 1000 yd. explosive  running backs.

Also got some info on 2012 signee RB Darelle Hatcher from Amytiville. He did not make the grades and was suppossed to attend summer school at Stony Brook but dropped out. He is no longer in the plans.

Hatcher  could have been a  good add.  As I posted over the summer he was a Gowins clone. Too bad for us and him.

I agree Hatcher is a loss, would have fit in perfect. Maybe he went to prep school and will reamerge at some point.

I hope Darelle found his way to prep school and hopefully a college scholarship. I was impressed with his highlight film.
