Post by: Chairman of the Board on May 03, 2012, 01:31:50 pm
I know its early- and these kids are HS sophomores.  I dont believe we've got a verbal from anyone yet (that i know of at least), however, Coach Nagle is on it already and looking at this kid- Luke Schwasnick (Oceanside, NY / Oceanside HS): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TtZeZoAASA

It looks like Sheets will be the leading returning scorer in suffolk county going into his junior year after scoring 89 pts as a sophomore. I think that's really impressive.

http://www.sachemreport.com/2012/09/24/caridi-commits-to-stony-brook/

Sachem North junior Joe Caridi has verbally committed to play lacrosse at Stony Brook University, according to Sachem coach Jay Mauro.

Caridi has been on the varsity since his sophomore year. He started and had 22 goals and 15 assists last season. He is also a very good two-way midfielder and solid with his groundball game.

“Joe is a great kid who works extremely hard,” Mauro said. “He is an excellent athlete with a great shot. He will be one of our leaders this year on offense. We expect big things from him and we know he will deliver.”

Caridi is the second Sachem athlete from the Class of 2014 to commit to Stony Brook, joining teammate Mike Calvagna. Tyler Andreassi, who graduates this year, has also committed to Stony Brook where his brother Michael (Class of 2010) and former teammate Alex Harris (Class of 2010) are also playing.

Sowell got lucky when he got McBride which led him to Crowley. Nagel has done a stellar job recruiting. As we see from the bios he's not only getting good Lacrosse players but he's getting top notch multi sport athletes. Some of these football players he is getting have quite the resume. That's a page out of Dom Starsa's book from Virginia, get real good high school football players to play Lacrosse in college. Watched Jake Sheets play QB in person last week he is another real good athlete and leader on the field. Keep em coming.

Do our Lax experts feel Nagle is building something special at the Brook?   He had a winner last season against all odds, I would even give him a pass this year if these recruits  develop over the long haul.

This incoming freshman class will define him imo.  He gets a pass for last year as it was mostly Sowells team but he did get a 7-10 team into the Tourny.  If some of his freshman (Rogers, Eastwood, Schultz, Lynott, Lindsay, etc) hit this year it will put SBU in a great position for the next few years.  Can't wait for Feb 9th.
Title: Re: 2015 Recruits- Class of 2018
Post by: Chairman of the Board on January 10, 2013, 09:41:59 am
Of course.  He's a proven winner and did a great job on a short year with players that werent necessarily his recruits.

Not to use Sowell as a direct comparison, but he came in in the same fashion, the roster quickly turned over, put in a long term investment in a large talented freshman class, and within a couple years was a hair away from a final 4 and nearly knocked off #1 Virginia twice.

Nagle will be just fine- but he'll do even better than that.  Plus, he is fortunate in some respects that the AE is down (Espey, Tiffany, and Sowell's first couple of years were the UA/BC domination years) so he will get them into the tourney i predict at least 50% of the time, somehow.

I feel he is building a real winner here. Even though they made tourny last year, 7-10 is not they way you want to get there. So I think he gets a pass for last year with big expectations for the next couple of years. Chairman is right about the AE witch is winnable and played at LaValle the next 2 yrs.

I agree with Joe Willie - Sheets sounds very Rooney-esque. They both seem like very high lacrosse iq individuals who don't have exceptional D1 physical attributes. It will be interesting to see how both athletes mature. I'm still hoping Rooney can grow to be a bit more like Compitello creating from X. We'll see....

Rooney is on pace to have a 200pt career w/89pts in 2yrs. He is also on pace to score 100g w/53 in 2yrs. Compitello had 146 pts w/68g & 78a. With his 2 best yrs ahead of him it is very possible that Rooney achieves these milestones witch in turn would make him a legitimate Div 1 athlete and Lax player.

Sachem North (NY) rising senior defender Anthony Ross has committed to nearby Stony Brook University. Ross' path to D-I is quite a story.   Ross did not start playing lax until eighth grade. He is an outstanding athlete with good footwork and good speed.  Ross is the third Class of 2014 Sachem North standout headed to Stony Brook, joining midfielders Joe Caridi and Mike Calvagna.

Calvagna: http://insidelacrosse.com/news/2013/06/11/recruiting-notes-under-armour-underclass-long-island-tryouts

Quote
Tryouts have commenced for the Under Armour High School All-American game. At John Burns Park in Massapequa, over 400 Long Island high schoolers took part in the two day event on June 8th and 9th. Evaluators and college coaches watched on at the talent on display. By Sunday night, they reduced the field to the Top 100, divided them into four teams, and played two games. The Top 40 athletes were then chosen afterward for one final game to conclude the event.

Michael Calvagna (Sachem North ’14) rarely saw him lose face-offs, high compete level to go along with skill.

has switched his verbal commitment to Stony Brook from Sacred Heart. A four-year varsity player and three-year starter, Talay has repped Suffolk County in the Long Island Showcase the last three summers and plays in events with Team Smithtown.  I have seen Ross play football and was really impressed with his speed and quick feet. Think he will be a nice addition but I hope he does not get too beat up or injured during football season. He was banged up last year and unfortunately the Sachem football coach has had a recent history of over using guys and thus them getting hurt. Example is incoming freshman Tyler Andreassi who did get hip surgery last spring but is expected to be ready for fall ball.

thanks- i watched the video last night.  i like it.

im being extremely hyper super critical here- this kid is a good player- these are the things id like to see him do at the next level- use the left hand a bit more, as on clearing he will get trapped and pressed and will need to switch hands.  otherwise, threw a few passes off the back foot.  step into and make it count.  but then again, its worked for eli manning to the tune of two super bowls...

i like the size (still growing?), the speed, the stick, the pressure, the intelligence, the field sense, even the extra man defense.  we need close defensemen in the next few classes, i think.  ill watch more video later.

ohh and this team is GOOD.  they play a decent schedule and beat the good teams.  ohio lacrosse has improved and note that they split with upper arlington last year.  a very good find and i think this kid could be a major contributor.

Thanks SBUFan!

I took a look at the video.  Obviously comes from a powerhouse program, and that's no understatement.  Good size.  From watching the football video, great breakaway speed and not afraid to hit.  Looks like a position defender, which i like because you can never have too many.  Off ball instincts and stick skills look sufficient, but so hard to tell how they adjust at the next level.

Another thing i really like is when an attackman changes direction on him, he commits but doesnt over commit.  He moves his hips to their hips and keeps his shoulders square, very good technique.  Great coaching i can tell.

What i really like about him is that on the clear, he doesnt get funneled into the sideline by the riding attackmen, and curl in and go back to the goalie; he legs it out and looks upfield and moves the ball.  This to me is his best asset.  I really like his acceleration.  Really good stride and carries the ball with his head up and eyes upfield.  Will add to our clearing game.  A real hustle guy and bigtime tenacity.

Also throws a good lift check behind the goal line.  He is certainly well coached.  Looks like a real disciplined player.

For his senior year, id like him to show us some left hand.

I  haven't seen the the kid play but I like him already...

“I knew Stony Brook was the fit for me,’’ said Chicquen after the official visits.

“No. 1 was probably the facility there. Their training facility and stadium was unmatched. I just got chills standing in the stadium.’’

“I chose to take the year off to get bigger and better,’’ he added. “I want to make a big impact as soon as I step on the field.’’

"It is about as far away as I could get from Vancouver Island, but that was just coincidence,’’ he indicated. “It is a beautiful location and the athletic and academic support at Stony Brook was most impressive.’’

so i watched the two videos again... i really like his "field sense", something you cant always teach.  off ball he seems to know where to be; when he has the ball he knows where to look.  good confidence going to the cage and running fast breaks.  what i like best about lloyd is his transition game, he is a one man clear, breakaway speed, shares the ball.

on the 2012 video, he showcases the whole toolset- speed, outside shot, passing, defense, grounders, cutting, off ball, everything.

Playoff update-

Calvagna and Ross (and Haun) at Sachem North are 14-4, lost in the 2nd round to Smithtown East.  They beat WM this year, West Islip, and earlier beat Smithtown east by 4.  If the Laxpower CPU ratings are worth anything, which is likely not, they are ranked #53 nationally. http://www.sachemreport.com/2014/05/01/instant-classic-sachem-downs-ward-melville/

Sheets at Bay Shore finished in the first round with a lost to Whitman, they had some nice wins (Miller Place, Whitman, Smithtown East) but some significant losses.  Looks like he finished with 18, 41: http://scores.newsday.com/sports/highschool/player.php?id=152139&schoolyear=2014

Maciejewski at Penn Yan are 15-3 and are in the third round, winning the Section 5 playoffs and now playing Section 6 winner Akron on Saturday.  Big win was Canandaigua.

Abdellatif and Ballston Spa finished 13-5 with a second round playoff loss to powerhouse Shen, after splitting with Shen earlier in the season.  Also logged wins again Colonie and Bethlehem.
Laxpower CPU ranked them #63 nationally.

Talay at Smithtown East is 16-3 and won the Suffolk title with three playoff wins, logging big wins against WM, West Islip (2x), Whitman, Smithtown West, and Sachem North.  They take on Massapequa for the LI title on Saturday.  Laxpower CPU has them at #17 nationally.

Randall at Mason is 11-5 and won two playoff games to advance to the the SW Ohio conference championship on Saturday against Xavier, which they doubled up earlier in the season.

Anderson at Shoreham (Hughes too) finished 9-8 in the Section B 11 gauntlet, im not sure if they made the playoffs.  They had a big setback last year over the dismissal of a longtime coach, who brought them to the national spotlight and kept them there for many years.

Robison at Carey finished 11-6 and lost to Manhasset, i think missing the playoffs, not sure.  Robison finished with 47, 16: http://scores.newsday.com/sports/highschool/player.php?id=153213&schoolyear=2014

Harrington and Whitman went 13-5, losing in the second round of the playoffs to Smithtown West.  Laxpower CPU has them at #88 nationally.  Harrington finished with 35, 27 on the season: http://scores.newsday.com/sports/highschool/player.php?id=151101

Czelatka and Riverhead went 7-9, no playoff berth.  Czelatka recorded 40, 16 in his senior season: http://scores.newsday.com/sports/highschool/player.php?id=153494

Cazenovia and Penn Yan displayed outstanding defense, keeping one another to near season-lows for scoring.
Possession and outstanding play from the get go by senior All-American goalie Brandon Maciejewski helped Penn Yan sprint out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Bradley Voight (Syracuse) and Rion Davison (Hartford).
Brandon Maciejewski, who spent the last five years starting in cage for the Mustangs, finished his final high school game with 11 saves.
