Stony Brook to the CAA?
« on: November 28, 2011, 06:15:36 pm »
I can't find the article but I've heard that Newsday is reporting that Stony Brook is in talks with the CAA and could join as early as June.

Newsday reported a similar article months ago... Are you sure you are talking about a new article?

Yeah, I had the same thought because i had seen the earlier article. I don't get newsday so I can't see their content online. If anyone can I'd like to hear if they're correct. Here's a thread on the CAAzone about it http://boards.caazone.com/showthread.php?116519-Stony-Brook-to-CAA

I get access to Newsday. No Article released yet... Hope its not a false statement. Some in the CAAZone dislike the idea of SB joining the CAA, others think it would be a good addition. Too early yet to worry about it, but if SBU makes it into the CAA it will be impressive. That will really be another step forward, so fast!!! We know CAA basketball and football would place us ahead of many. Just being in the CAA will boost recruiting so much. But, it will be a challenge to compete there for the first few years (in MBB and WBB, not in Football)!

where the hell is this article people are referring to?

http://www.flamefans.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=18353

it seems like Newsday published it... (maybe) and the pulled the article off the web. Is that possible?

There's another thread on Delaware's message board. I went over there shared a couple thoughts with them.

And it seems Hofstra might not be able to block us as some thought. I think Hofstra and Stony Brook being in the same conference would create a ton of interest across the island for both of us and possibly set up the CAA with nice bargaining chip.

I'm reading the thread. Some Blue Hens fans are totally arrogant... I guess the historical success of their program has gotten the to that point.

But also they stated that Hofstra alone doesn't have the power to block SBU getting into the CAA. If that is the case, then it is up to the other CAA administrators to allow us to join

I saw this on the AE Boards.   This would be our next logical step and I know we have some fan support with Maine, UNH and James Madison.  Great boost for the school and the athletics department if true. Lets keep our fingers crossed !

Does anyone think attendance this season warrants looking into expanding the stadium?

The last two games were high profile games with alot at stake.   Granted the  student and community support was outstanding  but we need high profile home games going forward.  Next season we will have Big South games with VMI, CSU and GWU plus  Colgate and  CCSU .   I see  our Homecoming game whoever that may be and maybe Colgate  as big games.  If in future seasons we schedule a Villanova  or Maine again or possibly a high profile IVY school like Harvard  the crowds will come.   If this CAA rumor bears fruit  then yes stadium expansion might be ideal.  But for now 8200 seats  plus some standees will be the norm.  Of course we have to continue our winning ways  which I'm sure we will.  Overall attendance is on the rise and that is great- we have to keep the momentum  going for expansion.

I'm going to take the contrarian view on expansion of the stadium. What's wrong with 6-8K fans per game? Do we really need to go to 12K, 15K, whatever? When will it be enough? The game is played for the benefit of the fans. I've been to a few games with 6K there, and it was low crowding and low hassle, yet there were still enough people in the stands to create the wave and make some noise. Do we really need to make it more difficult to get to the game? If the Wolves can keep winning and create a consistent Top 20 program, then getting 6-8K on a regular basis is realistic...especially with a move to the CAA.

Well. The goal is to become profitable in the sport instead of loosing money. So, Increasing the size of the stadium is a must, to a level in which the profit offsets the expenses. But I still think is not necessary yet. We need a couple of more years of consistent winning and you will see how the fans will crowd LaValle stadium. Our attendance average is still 67% percent of capacity (including the first round of Playoffs) which is an awesome improvement over a year ago of 59%. If we move to the CAA and see a increase in attendance in each game (80% to 90%) then I would support an expansion to 15k in four to eight years from now. If we move up to the FBS in 20 years from now then the ideal would be 20k-40k.

Total Attendance (Average) of the past four years:

2008          19,531 (3,255)
2009          18,578 (4,644)
2010          24,541 (4,908)
2011          39,049 (5,578)**

We can see that it is really taking off....
