Basketball season was originally slated to begin with games on Nov. 10, but is likely to move to Nov. 25 based upon a joint recommendation from the NCAA committees that oversee men's and women's basketball. The rationale makes sense. Most campuses are scheduled to clear out at Thanksgiving, so disruption for basketball teams will be limited.

As for football, the CAA soon will finalize a schedule for the spring. We do know that the regular season will end on April 17, with selections for the FCS playoffs taking place the following day. The team has been working hard and looking forward to "fall ball" in October.

The spring season, which will be limited to a maximum of eight regular-season games, is going to be a springboard for the fall.

A total **** show!

I disagree. I was against a spring season because it throws off the 2021 season, however if we use it in place of Spring football, limit it to 8 games, and then start the 2021 season in October as it seems to be the plan then I think this could work out well. Plus we get football year round from now until early 2022 basically in one form or another. I'm down.

If Biden wins the Presidency this will all change again. He will mostly shut the country down and sports, entertainment, concerts and all recreation events will be on hold. He sais it himself...I say the CAA should have played this Fall and do in conference games only. Or, play other D1 teams in your own state. We have many football teams between the  FCS and FBS in States where the CAA partisapates.

The NCAA Division I Board of Directors approved shifting the first date of competition for basketball from Nov. 10 to Nov. 25, and our teams could not be more excited to get the season underway. From the time our teams returned to campus, progressing from individual workouts (one ball with one coach on one basket) to full-team practices, the energy has been off the charts.

It has been a mad scramble to rebuild the nonconference schedules, but everything is finally coming together. Sharing a state with a large number of Division I programs certainly has provided tremendous scheduling flexibility.

I would be so overjoyed if the athletic department is just overexaggerating their "financial problems" in order to gain even more money from people and lead to actual constructive changes.

townhall- FB will have two non-conf games, one is set (says we should be excited for it- maybe RuTgers?!?!?) and the other is pending.

i'm so glad we have heilbron to build our athletics dept- and also to pull us through the pandemic.  so so so many sports fans hate their AD.  we have the opposite- this is the right guy for our program.  he has the right message.  the goal is the same.  pandemic or not.  win championships.

he actually welcomes the higher expectations.  its the way to win.

PS- $130k raised by 7:30pm, just today, and still going

Nearly one year to the day since sports shut down, our comeback will be official this weekend when football, cross country and swimming and diving return to competition. It's been a long journey, with multiple twists and turns along the way. And although there is still rough terrain to navigate, we are ready to thrive.

As we announced Wednesday, we will welcome a limited number of fans to LaValle Stadium on Saturday. Our intent is to open to a larger audience for future games in accordance with state and local guidelines, but we're excited to have families of our players and coaches attend this weekend. We miss our loyal donors, season ticket holders and community supporters, and we're looking forward to having you back very soon.

The women's basketball team has some unfinished business and, starting on Sunday, can take an initial step toward their ultimate goal.

Friday at 5 p.m. on ESPNU, you can watch our women's basketball team take on Maine for the opportunity to go to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.

We enter the weekend ranked No. 6, with momentum building after road wins last weekend against UMBC and No. 16 Towson. The team is 4-2, with the only losses coming against No. 1 North Carolina and No. 2 Syracuse. Although we didn't win those games against the nation's top two teams, I believe the experience will pay dividends down the road.

The actions we took to contain costs this year helped to offset close to $8 million in lost revenue, including $4.1 million in student-fee refunds and a $1.1 million reduction in state allocation.
Obviously we saved money from our teams not traveling. Fifteen full-time positions that have become vacant since July 2020 have remain unfilled.

"Five years.  $100 million."  How much has been raised by SH's athletics department?

Its time.

From Newsday. August 31, 2015.

From the moment he first set foot on Stony Brook's campus to take over as athletic director in May 2014, Shawn Heilbron said his vision was to build a football program powerful enough to drive the fundraising necessary to put the New York state school with the funny name on the major-college athletic map.

Exactly one year later, Heilbron unveiled his five-year program titled "Together We Transform" to accomplish that goal. It came with a variety of new initiatives intended to build a big-time college football culture on Long Island that might begin to generate the revenue necessary to turn the artist's renderings of a double-decked stadium seating 25,000 and an indoor practice facility into actual brick and mortar.

The price tag for everything in the five-year package? Take a deep breath.

"The number we use internally is we need to raise $100 million," Heilbron told Newsday. "It's a lot of money. That can come from the state, it can come from private donors, but that's the reality.

Gonna cut SH some slack for this past year.  Covid put a monkey wrench in things for sure.  But how much did he raise of the projected $100MM in the 4 prior years?   And of the 15 vacancies mentioned, are these new openings that were frozen, or people that left (and the job re-hire was subsequently frozen)?  If the latter, that's not a good tell.

SH and RE will use covid as an excuse.  I would be surprised if they raised 10-15 million. the turnover in his dept is a joke. A revolving door. And the ones I knew left because of the crappy atmosphere in the office and lack of experience managing the dept. They were all nicer than SH and his sr staff. They at least said hello, and most knew your name.

Wow!  So I don't really know anyone in the current regime any more, but from what I heard, the atmosphere was one of fear when Fiore was at the helm.   I heard that most in the dept were relieved when he was canned, and that SH was supposed to be the grand savior.  Sounds to the contrary, based on your assessment.
