George Mason announced today they are joining the A10 on July 1.  With Old Dominion and Georgia State also leaving the CAA at the end of this school year that leaves the CAA with only 9 teams.  There probably will be some new talk about SBU joining the CAA.  The CAA needs to rebuild and SBU has a lot to offer.  Maybe Hofstra's lack of excitement about SBU being a part of the CAA (if that is true) will not matter quite as much considering where the CAA is at now.

If Dayton and St Louis leave the A10 after next year for the new Big East (as has been rumored all over) - and once the SB Arena gets opened - there might be room for SBU in the A10.  That is jumping a few levels but the way the athletic program is developing in all sports hopefully - in a few years - that would be a possible fit because it is hard to imagine a better spot for SBU long term.

Is it common for a school to move from one conference to another frequently, What I mean by that is could SB go from AE to CAA and then in 3 to 5 years move to the A10 ?? Does anyone have examples of a school/s that did that in the past???

Butler played in Horizon last year. Played in Atlantic 10 this year. And will be playing in Big East next year!

If we can leave our football in CAA, then I would love Stony Brook in Atlantic 10. But SB baseball and lacrosse fans are going to hate it. A10 is very weak in all sports except basketball in comparison to CAA. In any case I thinking we are pipe dreaming here and there much better suited schools ahead of us at the moment for A10.

So I think CAA will be more logical move. One home for all sports including FB. CAA is decent in BB even after the deflection of GMU and it is strong in lacrosse and baseball. However CAA is really unstable. Members are always moving. It stretches from Boston to Carolina! Only way it would make sense moving from AE is if CAA starts north and south divisions which would limit the trips to south.

Although AE is visionless and not aggressive, one thing we should realize that after BU has left we are probably the Flagship school in this conference. Our wishes will have a lot more weigh in AE decision making. In CAA we would be just another northern member.

So when, not if, CAA invites Stony Brook, SBU has a lot of homework to do, weighing the pros and cons. Remember it hasn't worked out for Hofstra as everyone thought it would.

I gotta say, and I know I'm not the only one thinking this....these nonstop conference affiliation switches are going overboard. It seems like an avalanche of them over the past few years. While I want to see SB in a conference that makes sense (moving from the BS to CAA in football was a no-brainer), I think the overall trend is cheapening the entire concept of the student-athlete. It's becoming more of a "business" instead of healthy intercollegiate competition, even at the mid-major level. Exciting, sure, but it's being overdone.

i think thats right because for lax, we'd have to go back into the ECAC or something like that.  I really think not only is the CAA a better fit for SB, but SB is a better fit for the CAA.  We are more similar to those schools, and closer (should that matter).  We can build rivalries better in the CAA, i think.

If SB joins the CAA full on, we wont be a just a northern member for long!!!  GO SB

RyN1k- 100% agreed, on every point.

I really hate banning schools from tournaments and Olympic sports championships on their last year for moving to another conference. I hated banning of BU by AE and hate the banning CAA just handed out to GMU. Why punish student athletes for school's decision. Fine the school $$$, that's okay with me, but let that those students, especially, seniors compete for championship. Its really petty.

This hasn't been touched in awhile but the AE boards are reporting  that the AE is dropping mens tennis after the season ends.  They also dropped mens swimming and diving. I know our swim teams are on an extended leave  but where do we go ?   Binghamton has moved their mens tennis to the MAC  with Bufflao, Toledo etc.    While financial  issues persist in college sports it seems the AE is shrinking just a little. So do we drop two mens sports or move ?
