second mention of athletics:

This invitation is a historic step for our institution and a testament to our tremendous growth – both in academics and athletics – over the last two decades," said President Maurie McInnis. "Today would not be possible without the dedication of our student-athletes and coaches, who have paved the way for this moment. Our future is bright, and we look forward to competing for CAA Championships for years to come!"

ill be a cynic and say this is lip service, but, this did happen on her watch and i have to wonder if she was instrumental.  these conference shifts happen quickly these days...

I may be totally wrong, but it does feel like she didn’t hesitate when the opportunity came. Which can only be good going forward for future athletics related decisions.

Baseball and Softball teams must be very happy to have conference games in the warmer south. CAA has teams with strong baseball traditions.

Should be good for lacrosse teams too. Although I worry about this year’s post season ban for women’s team.

As for basketball, we took being in the top 4 granted due to AE having really poor bottom teams. In CAA if we don’t keep up it will be easy to fall at the bottom.

wlax teams should love this though... something like 9 straight titles with barely a conference loss.  and they werent close.

mlax will help with RPI but that conference is extremely wide open- any one of 7 teams can win it.  it's brutal.

anyone have intel on wbb for CAA?

If there is an AE ban, would wLax be eligible for at-large invite?

I'm a firm believer that everything starts at the top (whether good or bad).   Given that, kudos to both McGinnis and Heilbron for getting this done.

Take it with a grain of salt, since there is a lot of animosity regarding Stony Brook leaving the AE, but on Basketballforum.com, someone posted this:

========================================================================================================
Per the league's rulebook, under Section 4, part b:

"Upon notice of an institution’s intention to withdraw from America East, the institution’s teams become ineligible, on a date to be determined by the remaining members of the Board of Presidents, to compete for Conference postseason championships.”

" The rule was put in after Northeastern skipped. The CAA did the same to Old Dominion and Georgia State."

Very interesting. If that’s the case, with the backlash CAA received for banning JMU, and the emphasis AE puts on student-athletes, the presidents may hesitate to ban us during this tough time with Covid.

These moves are always up to the presidents when all is said and done. I'm still not convinced Maurie gives a rip about SBU Athletics, but it's a no brainer to make a move from the 25th ranked conference to the 13th ranked conference especially when the geography is reasonable and we'll be competing against other great schools (Northeastern, Delaware, W&M, Hampton, etc.)

With how dominant the W-LAX has been we should be able to get an at-large bid to NCAAs, no?

I do want to believe in McGinnis, more than I should.

Spallina specifically gave first credit to her above all else in his statement. Maybe just a formality, maybe it means that she really was a big factor, who knows.
