I have a feeling this video will respark the conversation (sorry) but hopefully shed some new light on Stony Brook Students Interest/Apathy in Athletics directly from students. The Sports Section spoke with a contributor to the article on their findings and spoke from the heart about what the athletics department has done right/wrong and how far the fanbases have left to grow. It is a very passionate 30+ min discussion.

bravo, gentlemen, for taking a massively important topic head-on.

in a nutshell, i think mike is right to say the students dont care, and the athletics program is clearly not broken.

also great points on how our athletics have not brought on the bad that comes with success.  like UNC making phony courses.

i keep coming back to the same conclusion.  we just need a different type of student, and, we can do that without sacrificing student quality.

this is very damaging to the university and the clock is running and we are losing ground to rivals.  simply put, athletics raises the profile of a school and brings in more applications and better students and more alums back on campus and donating $$$.  if we dont fix this, we lose.

it felt like there's more to discuss here- can you have mike on again to talk more about this topic?  ethan tam please?

Great talk. Boy do I miss the days of Seawolves Night Live.

I used to listen to that show religiously while I was enrolled at Stony Brook from 2007-2012. It's a shame that relationship with the athletic department somewhat broke down. This needs to come back urgently. On that same note we need more post-game collaboration between WUSB/Seawolves Athletic Department/Student Life. There can be so much accomplished when subunits of the University work together. But it almost seems like everyone works in silos

While I agree with much of what has been said on this (aka student apathy), I don't think that the athletics program is broken, but I do think they have culpability.  And it starts and it always starts at the top.  I think we need a Fiore-like AD cheerleader (an ethical one, mind you) at the top along with a Presidential Cheerleader. Also, you can't blame it entirely on student apathy, when you have 3MM people on Long Island, 1/2 of which live in Suffolk (1.5MM potential fans vs. 25K student fans; hmm, I know where I'd spend my efforts).  We're the only D1 program in Suffolk, and the athletics department needs to capture that market not only in recruiting but in fan attendance.  Create the buzz, and they will come.  Win, and they will come.  We definitely had the beginnings of this with Fiore, until he was rightly dismissed on various allegations, and then Covid followed suit.  You need to dedicate a portion of your staff to cultivating a fan base, and make part of their earnings conditional on it.   I know we're a public university, but if you privatize earnings to staff (and not just coaches) based on attendance and wins, you will inevitably see better results.  Stick with the state worker union mentality, and we'll continue to see attendance mediocrity.  Just my 2 cents.

Another 4 more years of FloSports https://caasports.com/news/2023/2/9/football-caa-announces-comprehensive-media-rights-agreement-with-cbs-sports-and-flosports.aspx

I have no idea how the F the football only schools even sign off on this.... the games go to Flo, but they don't even get the CBSSN games on the basketball side to counter balance it... what the hell.

Might be for the better though... there was never any reason to pay for Flo to watch this trash program and there still isn't.

we now have an eSports team: https://news.stonybrook.edu/university/stony-brooks-esports-team-tackles-the-competition/

The article mentions the team is under recreation and wellness, how can it be varsity if it's not on the SB Athletics site? Very odd

That said, I absolutely LOVE the development as esports will continue to grow in popularity, and if it does continue to organize at the college level I believe this is a sport we are VERY well positioned to dominate. We're already known for being an anti-social campus. Those kids have to be doing something in their dormrooms right? Huge fan here.

tangential but interesting.  the trend of D2 to D1 somewhat continues.  in our home state. https://www.usalaxmagazine.com/college/men/le-moyne-jumping-to-division-i-will-join-northeast-conference

I have a major problem with this. Taking the name “Colonial” out of the CAA name, and calling it “Costal”. Why? I know why. Woke’ism is now in sport’s throughout tue Country.

Our country has gone to $hit in 21/2 years. Unbelievable!!!

Reason aside, I don't like the name change.  Colonial had a richer tone to it.

https://caasports.com/news/2023/7/20/baseball-caa-changes-official-conference-name-to-coastal-athletic-association.aspx

Quote
“The Conference’s new name represents a culmination of its efforts over the past three years to expand  its membership, solidify its geographic footprint and affirm its long-standing mission through a new vision statement which emphasizes that CAA institutions work together to advance nationally competitive college athletic programs – coupled with outstanding academic programs – that empower student athletes as whole persons who strive at the highest level in every aspect of their lives,” said CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio.  “Our new name is reflective of the Conference’s continuity and unity, as well as each institutions’ commitment to be United in Excellence.”

no idea of course but this maybe vaguely suggests geography had something to do with it.  then again, is coastal really all that different than colonial, from a geographical perspective?  i think each school fits both.  arguably.
