Is this the greatest moment ever in SB Athletics?
« on: June 09, 2012, 04:26:27 pm »
Ive been following SB for about six or seven years.  Most of my fan interest has been basketball until this year, so my knowledge of the history of SB sports isn't great.  To state the obvious - the baseball team is one win away from a trip to the College World Series.  The team right now is tied 1 game to 1 with national powerhouse LSU.  Regardless of how the team does tomorrow has the team achieved more than any other team in Seawolves history?  I know there was just a national track champion.  I don't want to downplay that, but to me it just doesn't compare.  Game 1 of the Super Regional is being called the best college baseball game of the year.  SB is getting coverage and attention right now unlike anything I have ever seen.  The Joyner tip in over Albany got some nice play on ESPN but what is happening right now is huge!

Without a doubt  this has to be the crown jewel of our athetic program.    In the last  week we have beaten national power Miami, and then won three straight in the Regionals and now LSU takes a hit.  No other team we have  can lay claim to that right now. SBU baseball has established themselves as a rising national power. Now if basketball can pull  something like this off and make the  Sweet 16 we will  have something!

We're already in the Sweet 16. The next would be the top 8 in Omaha

I became a fan 3 years ago (when I was a sophomore in SBU). I never felt so good and so proud of our athletic department as I have felt the past week. It feels like we are really getting somewhere. The hard work, the dedication, the investment, all the support is paying off. The best of it all is that this sorta came by surprise and at the end of the year (june) when there is no other NCAA sport on TV to drown out our exposure. This is the best time of the year for an NCAA run. I didn't expect this. I expected us to compete but not defeat the LSUs of the world... This amazing.

Our department is growing. Hopefully we can keep growing at the same pace and have more national success. TOMORROW (GAME 3) WILL BE A BIG DAY!

I'm sure this has to be the best moment in SBU history.

Redwyn check my post.    I would love to see our basketball program  make a  run like this to the Sweet 16.  That would be icing on the cake.

I have a feeling like Basketball will take much longer to get to the Sweet 16 out of the america East. Baseball has been traditionally one of better sports with lacrosse. Not the same story with Bball.... Also, the single-elimination nature of the NCAA tourney doesn't help either...

...You can lose 4 games in NCAA baseball and still win the College World Series. Not the same story for in NCAA basketball

A few years back M soccer did advance to the NCAA 2nd round, i think they defeated Yale.

But you guys know me, how can i leave out M lacrosse?  A #4 ranking, a trip to the quarterfinals (which happened to be at LaValle), took the #1 team (Virginia) to the wire, blew a 3 goal lead and lost in the last minute.  For a trip to the final four.  Also that team had 5 All Americans, including the best player in the country.  They all play pro now.  Then a few months later in February, #1 Virginia visited LaValle again, and SB blew another lead, tied it with 3 seconds left, lost in OT on a failed clear and open net.  UVa wouldnt be denied!

I know, lacrosse isnt as national as baseball, football, or bball, but come on its on Long Island!!!

CoB   I agree  we had a golden opportunity that day  in front of the  home fans.  A national championship run in any sport would reallly be a major accomplishment for our athletic department and SBU in general.  They are hard to come by and the competition is tough which makes them all that more impressive. Soemhow  as fan I think we will win one in the future.

You can't buy the kind of National exposure y'all are getting right now.

Enjoy this run y'all are on.
Memories like these will last a lifetime.

Even if y'all become a baseball super power, you will ALWAYS remember that first deep run.

Best moment for now, it's not over yet. They are gonna get so much press for this. It will be on all the news channels and sports networks. This is a game changer for the whole athletic dept. To think it could get better next week. We might as well start dreamng now. Lacrosse in '10 knocked on the door and these guys just kicked it in.

y'all definitely have the makeup of a team that can make a run in Omaha

at least 3 solid pitchers, with good bullpen depth.
and a lineup of hitters that make the other team's staff work.

it's a successful formula, one that has worked form many champs in the past.

throw in the crowd factor (people in Omaha LOVE the underdog), and I like y'all chances.

now Geaux out there and whipp some @$$

Unbelievable moment. Stony Brook is the first school east of Indiana and north of DC to make the college world series since Maine in 86. This isn't just a great moment in SB athletics, it's a great moment for northeast baseball!
