Not many Northeast programs can compete early season with the southern programs early in the year. I don't think anybody thinks a team from the CAA is a national championship contender when you are competing against the SEC/Big 12/etc

They still have the potential to make a lot of noise and it will be interesting to see how they handle the CAA this year.

Problem is, the CAA has a few Southern teams like College of Charleston, which just lost a one-run game to Clemson on Tuesday. They had 10-game winning streak before they dropped the final game to William & Mary over the weekend. They even beat Coastal Carolina. And Elon opened its season playing three tight games against Kentucky, then kicked butt on a few northern teams themselves.

Seawolves get their first taste of in-conference Southern hospitality when they go down to Charleston this weekend. By the way, that's where the CAA tournament will be played.
Seawolves football, men's and women's basketball, hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, baseball and softball on WUSB 90.1/107.3 FM on Long Island, wusb.fm on the stream.

We talk about it every week on the Sports Section Sundays 10 pm-midnight. Go to wusb.fm/sports for latest broadcast schedules!

Thank you for the insight, Voice.. I agree with everything you just said. The CAA is no AE. SBU is going to have a tough time competing with all southern school in sports. Even SB women’s Lax is going to struggle against some teams. But that is a good thing. Maybe this athletic department can get their heads out of their asses and focus on hiring real coaches and real AD. Who wants to get this program on the map

Northeastern has probably been the most consistently good baseball program from the North in the CAA along with Hofstra and they have won the last two tournaments between them.  UNCW has been the best in the conference since East Carolina left many, many years ago. Campbell comes to the CAA next year and has been really good for quite some time.  They will probably be one of the best programs in the CAA when they get here.  Trips to the Carolinas with Elon, Campbell, UNCW and Charleston will be tough.  William and Mary has been good as well.  The good thing is that there will be chances to get good wins in conference play.

Kinda makes tomorrow's game a big one, doesn't it?

Seawolves split against UNC Wilmington on Friday, stole one from Charleston last weekend. They take the rubber match on Sunday, things look up considerably.

Don't stare too long at the pitching statistics. Just remember that with a lot of these guys, a couple of scoreless innings drops their ERA like a rock.

Enjoy the hitting, though. Giordano is at .398, Fox at .338.

Bellissimo and O'Neill showed me something yesterday. UNCW's best hitter, Jac Croom at .435, went 0 for 4 in the second game. Three of the four outs ended the inning, two of those with two men on.

One coach you leave alone is Matt Senk. He's brought his program up from Division III to the College World Series and if there is anyone you can trust with a transition to the CAA, it's him.

Another is Joe Spallina. SB was picked to finish first in the CAA in its very first year, and like last year, the only teams they have had trouble with are ahead of them in the rankings. They are a legit top 10 program with no signs of fading. And an undefeated conference record will come as no surprise either.

I am naturally watching men's lax very closely as well. I think right now they can compete in the CAA, but the question is whether they can break through to the next level. Their last NCAA appearance was in 2012, the same year the baseball team went to Omaha, and baseball's been back to the dance a couple of times since.

If that rendering comes to reality, it’s going to be a huge boost for the baseball program. That looks amazing. In addition, not many northeast teams can say that we also play conference games in south. I think CAA + facility upgrade will result in better recruiting and improved baseball performance.

I was more hyped before I read the specifics. The donor only covered half of the $5 million, and then Joe Nathan chipped in some more to help, but since they didn't publicize the number, I'm guessing not too much. So Heilbron and co. still have to raise the remaining ~$2.5M before they even begin constructing it. That could take a long time. Especially since Heilbron has been talking about this since, what 2016?

Just for clarity sake, the photo used as a reference has been around since at least 2018, so they've been holding out hope for years that a donor would swoop in and save their ass.

https://www.sbstatesman.com/2017/04/02/heilbron-discusses-plans-for-joe-nathan-field-upgrades/

This was the article I remember. From 2017. Amazing how terribly everything in it has aged. "The hope is that an official announcement will be made by the end of the year." Six years is almost the same as one year, am I right Shawn???

Even when they were made to forfeit a whole damn championship game because there weren't lights, it still took them two more years to officially announce that they're halfway to the final goal! I forgot how much I hated Heilbron and co. until I looked over these details again, they make my blood boil with their ineffectiveness.

I should email this to McInnis as more evidence of how bad he is at his job so he doesn't get any more contract extensions.

Heilbron was a safe pick after Priore, but performance wise gets a D-. Right above Fail for keeping the engine running. Besides all the shortcomings, I also think that he is not capable of leading this program in this new age of NIL. We need a leader who can raise money, has vision, has balls to make ambitious decisions, and make use of NIL deftly. He doesn’t get credit for CAA move from me. CAA came calling and it was a no brainer. Even that we screwed up. Could have waited after the AE tourney to announce to avoid the ban.

If you ask on Twitter Heilbron and staff won't reply when the money will be raised. they know they cant get it done fast. They didnt say how much nathans donation was so there is probably a reason for that. No other MLB seawolves stepping up? Alumni from the baseball and softball teams have asked when it will be done and no answer. they are mad because they were told when they were recruited years ago this was in the works it shows you how bad heilbron and emrich are at raising money. the president doesnt seem to care since they are still here.

I don’t think u will see Heilbronn and enrich raise the money they need it’s all fluff. At least ten years away unless one big donor steps up.
