Stony Brook's Omaha momentum

A couple of days after Stony Brook returned from its trip to the 2012 College World Series, recruiting coordinator Joe Pennucci headed out with something a little better to sell.

He told recruits about a good baseball program and quality school, of course, and he spoke about past NCAA regional appearances. The Seawolves are proud of those seasons. But now, they're not Pennucci's only bullet. Now he can ask someone, "Do you want to know what it's like in Omaha?"

"Being in Omaha is the best recruiting tool you can have," Pennucci says. "It opens up the eyes of those who in the past may never have heard of Stony Brook or thought of it as a legit place to play or go to school."

This is the true value of Stony Brook's 2012 season. Can Pennucci, who was promoted to associate head coach in August, and the Stony Brook staff parlay one College World Series trip into multiple years of recruiting success? Will the recognition and exposure allow the Seawolves to attract a higher-profile recruit that might not have been interested before?

"I'm a firm believer in trusting your eyes," Pennucci told me. "If I was too worried about the high-profile guys, we wouldn't have gotten [2012 first-round pick Travis] Jankowski. But yes, more high-profile recruits probably return a call or show more interest than they would have before Omaha."

There are still inherent challenges at Stony Brook. It has to sell the America East conference and a cold corner of the Northeast. But Pennucci has proved that he can lure players from all over the country -- Stony Brook has four freshmen from California on the 2013 roster -- and that gives the Seawolves hope.

I am really looking forward to the new season. The trip to the cws was a great exposer for SBU...should help with recruiting. I hope we play some OOC games against NY area teams like Hofstra, St. Johns, Manhattan, Seton Hall (NJ.. I know!), etc.

Just checked that our baseball 2013 schedule is out on Seawolves homepage. We are playing 1 at St. Johns and 1 at Manhattan. I am sure with more success, we would play good NY teams more. We also start with 3 games at FIU and 3 at North Carolina.. both very good teams.

You will get drafted too.  7 SB players chosen in 2012.

What are your guys expectations for the baseball team this season? Lost a lot of talent, but also return guys like McNitt, Vanderka, Krause, Peragine, Goldstein and brought in probably the best class in recent America East history with 12th and 21st round draft picks.

Of course we would all be hoping for a similar run like last year... going to CWS. But realistically I am expecting Seawolves to win the AE regular season and AE tournament and at least reach the regional finals if not super final.

Thanks for the link joewille.. good read.

"1. How does a high school player from Southern California end up at Stony Brook?

I was looking for a school that had a strong balance between academics and athletics. I was attracted to Stony Brook's academics and specifically their excellent health sciences program because of my interest in becoming a doctor. From a baseball standpoint, I liked Stony Brook's winning tradition and the opportunity to earn impact innings as a freshman."

I guess SBU is going to be a very attractive destination to many new recruits who are also interested in quality education, in addition to proximity to NYC.

Our attention will be on men's hoops against Vermont, but it's the first weekend for the baseball team too. They play three games (first is Friday at 6PM) against Florida International, a team in the top-half of D1. Taking at least two of those games will bode well for the team after last year's shocking season.
