Maureen McInnis. Vice President of University of Texas. Art history major. Looks like an anti-Stanley. But a voice from the Big 12 has to be a great thing.

https://news.stonybrook.edu/university/maurie-mcinnis-named-sixth-president-of-stony-brook-university/

I'm in agreement. She'll make a great face for the university. So long as she's not anti-sports (can't imagine her being so coming from UT Austin/The Big 12) I don't anticipate having a problem with her. Glad we took our time and hopefully found the right person.

Serious question. over 6 months of scouring the globe for a new President that would be a great fit for SBU. I have a question..I really dont know anything about how to run a University, or anything close to that, however. Isin't SB predominately a research university, big into Medical, Engineering, hings of that nature. Maurie Mclinnis has her degree in history of slave and abolitionist Art. Served as Curator for multiple musuem exibitions. How does that correlate to making Stony Brook University, and school of medicine better? Where is her background in medical research, Math, etc... Enlighten me please.

She seems to have the right experience coming from UT Austin with several great schools in her background. I'm not really concerned about what her own major was at this point. I just hope she'll be good for the university which I think she will be.
So, it's a crap shoot.  She has no experience running a school like Stony Brook. 6 month of a national search and SB cant find a President with experience running a medical school?? I dont know. Sounds like typical NYS screw up to me..

As I'm sure you know, people generally look to move upwards, not sideways in their careers when they change jobs. She was the vice president at friggin Texas which is the flagship university of the second largest state in the country and has 50,000 students. As good as SBU is, Texas has an even stronger academic reputation than SBU. I think we're worrying about the wrong things here. I think she'll do a fine job running the university. What I want to know about is will she prioritize the things we care about on this board (athletics and student life).

Very true. That is the main purpose of this forum, athletics. For me at least. I guess time will tell with her and we just have to see what she has in store for this university. Hopefully, she loves football and Basketball.

My 2 biggest concerns are enhancing the image and standing of SBU, and enhancing our sports programs. The Art History background scares me a bit, but as another poster stated, Shirley Strum Kenney was an English major, and I thought she did a great job. Also, the lack of one word on athletics on anything she’s said is a slightly worrisome. The UT experience is probably a big plus, which will provide us with a perspective of taking sbu to the next (and larger) level. I certainly wish her the best of luck moving forward, and time will judge all.
How old a Seawolf am I? I followed them during their Final 4 DIII hoops run in 1977-78 (they were called the Patriots then)

Quote
McInnis, an art historian, said she’s also concerned about what COVID-19, and the extraordinary economic strains it created, mean for Stony Brook University’s financial standing. “I will admit I am very worried about the funding picture for Stony Brook,” McInnis said. “I was worried before. I’m considerably more worried now.”

McInnis noted that Stony Brook has been a centerpiece of the state’s efforts to fight the coronavirus, from the work its hospital and researchers are doing, to its role in hosting quarantined study-abroad students, to the fact that its campus will be used for an additional field hospital facility. The entire State University of New York system, and the state, must understand the “disproportionate” economic impact on Stony Brook, she said. It will take money from the state, federal government, and philanthropists to help Stony Brook gain stronger financial footing, she added.

Shirley did a great job! I really admired her. Stanley was competent, but didn’t wow me. Hope new President outperforms both of them. Wish her the best.
