It’s a crucial time in the university’s history. Stanley stagnated us. We need a president whose vision is to elevate us to national recognition and expand our university’s size. More dorms, more buildings. Anything short of that would be failure.

I wouldn't say Stanley stagnated us. Quite the opposite actually. It's some of his supposed actions on the way out that have me questioning him a bit though.

I do hope whoever we choose has an ambitious vision for athletics and student life on this campus. That needs to be improved more than anything. If we get a stick up the @$$ academic type who does stupid stuff like make SBU a dry campus or doesn't continue to invest in athletics we'll be in  big trouble. The academic part of SBU is immaculate. It's the other areas that can be improved.

Update on the Status of the Presidential Search

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students:
I am writing to update you on the search for the next president of Stony Brook University. The Search Committee spent the last six months preparing for the search, reviewing candidate materials and interviewing a deeply capable pool of candidates. The Committee finished its work last week by selecting candidates to recommend to the Stony Brook Council. The Council met yesterday and selected three finalists to recommend for consideration by Chancellor Kristina Johnson. I am happy to report that the Committee and the Council reached an overwhelming consensus on these three individuals. Chancellor Johnson will now review the candidates with her Executive Leadership team and select one of them to be our next President. The Chancellor’s selection must be also be approved by the SUNY Board of Trustees.
The campus search process has been most rewarding. We had over 50 applicants, conducted 10 interviews and selected 3 terrific finalists. I thank the members of the Committee and the Council who gave their time and insights throughout this process. We came together as a team focused on finding a set of finalists who could take Stony Brook to the next level. As noted in an earlier message, our goal was to attract a dynamic, strategic and collaborative leader who will continue the momentum and enhance Stony Brook in its role as a top national research university. I believe we have met this charge and look forward to the entire SBU campus community welcoming the candidate ultimately approved by the Chancellor and the SUNY Board.

Sincerely,

Kevin S. Law
Chair, Stony Brook Council
Chair, Presidential Search Committee

continue momentum and enhance Stony Brook — sounds good, talks of upward trajectory.

Yet I know better than to be fooled by words. And I hate that it has to be approved by “SUNY” board of trustees. I don’t trust them to have our best interests in mind.

Maureen McInnis. Vice President of University of Texas. Art history major. Looks like an anti-Stanley. But a voice from the Big 12 has to be a great thing.

I'm in agreement. She'll make a great face for the university. So long as she's not anti-sports (can't imagine her being so coming from UT Austin/The Big 12) I don't anticipate having a problem with her. Glad we took our time and hopefully found the right person.

opening thoughts:

-large state U experience as provost & EVP (UTexas and Virginia)

-knows how to operate in large state educational system (SUNY 64 campuses, 425k students; UT 14 campuses 240k students) (and if you include other TX state systems, much larger)

-from texas, where sports are forefront (revenues, TV contracts, facilities)

-good academic institutions in her background (UT, Yale, UVa)

-having spent some time in austin (though, 20 years ago), they have a vibrant community that supports the U; hopefully she makes immediate changes and brings some of that up here; will be an uphill challenge as we know

Wish list- once COVID is overwith, immediately put together a committee on student life please.

Serious question. over 6 months of scouring the globe for a new President that would be a great fit for SBU. I have a question..I really dont know anything about how to run a University, or anything close to that, however. Isin't SB predominately a research university, big into Medical, Engineering, hings of that nature. Maurie Mclinnis has her degree in history of slave and abolitionist Art. Served as Curator for multiple musuem exibitions. How does that correlate to making Stony Brook University, and school of medicine better? Where is her background in medical research, Math, etc... Enlighten me please.

Someone with a science background may have been a better fit, but to be fair, Shirley Kenny's degree was in English literature, and she did a lot to expand SBU's prestige.

Kenny led Stony Brook’s D1 push. Stanley then did nothing to advance our athletics, so I’m not against the art history major.

She seems to have the right experience coming from UT Austin with several great schools in her background. I'm not really concerned about what her own major was at this point. I just hope she'll be good for the university which I think she will be.
