i wonder if any sports are on the chopping block: https://www.inquirer.com/health/coronavirus/coronavirus-covid-19-college-sports-economic-impact-20200327.html
The big $ sports carry the unprofitable sports to round out the field during good times. If the big $ sports revenue is slashed, we're going to see lesser popular sports slashed, and you will see some schools cut programs like football/basketball altogether, a la Hofstra and football. Just another fallout from these unprecedented times.
P.S. As an aside, as we hit recessionary times, a lot of private schools in general will fail to survive economically, and I expect some to shut their doors inevitably. With unemployment expected to hit 15%+, and with no target for return to normalcy, expect state schools like Stony Brook to become even more competitive to get into. However, with state funding almost a certainty to be cut, look for Stony Brook to cut budgets at large, including athletics.
I hate to say this but we are NOT in a recession, we're in a depression. When you have 40% of GDP wiped out that's depression.
Emperor Coumo couldn't balance a budget in the best economy since the Industrial Revolution. What do you think he is going to do the NY in a depression. Huge cuts across the board for everything and everybody. He already started with cuts to NYS employees. April 1st all state employees were supposed to get their 2% raise. Well, that is cut and gone.
I am expecting some sports to be cut for SUNY schools. Like I said last week. I wouldn't be surprised is Football will be on the chopping block, and that would suck for SBU and the community that supports and donates money to the school for athletics.
The way things are looking now, the NCAA will most likely cancel all Fall sports programs. That could actually be a blessing in disguise. All coaches , staff, and admin should be Furlouged and not get paid for 1 year. If they leave and find other jobs so be it. EWU head coach already announces he is taking a pay cut, voluntarily. Temporally suspend all sports and save the University millions of dollars.
Maybe by suspending all sports programs they will be solvent enough for next season and not have to eliminate any sports programs going forward.
